Brief by Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL Edward Tulane, a doll rabbit, is the main character in this thoughtful tale by Kate DiCamillo (Candlewick, 2006). Edward is dearly loved by a young girl named Abilene. One day he is lost over the side of a boat. His journey leads him to a older couple who dress him like a girl rabbit, a hobo and his dog, a young girl and her brother and, finally, to a doll shop. Along the way, Edward learns to love the people he encounters. He also learns that family members can be cruel to one another; that hobos have family that they love dearly and don’t want to forget; that no matter how much you love someone, she may still die; and that no matter what happens in life, never give up on love. Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey infuses each character that Edward encounters with a unique accent and aura, and accurately portrays their emotions. A beautifully crafted telling.–Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL

inspiration: The look of vintage tin toys and puppet show . The vintage look will give a nostalgic feel well suited for tales and bedtime stories and especially for the book. The analog appearance and feel that toys used to be back in 1940-1960 is something that im looking for.

mood and style: With an intention to achieve a sense of forgotten and abandoned past, I’m looking for sepia tones and muted colors. Dirty and dusty but very ornamented. Shallow depth of field. Contrast of shadows and light. The graphics will be originated by drawings and will have a handcrafted look, put together by sowing, painting ,nails and screws. Slow movements and melancholic sound.

Typography: Painted on wood or rusty metal, maybe in the background or as an individual element. Hand made type also as a choice.

Styleframe and character design. Animation Idea: A Slow motion fall while the background changes showing the titles. The character will fall very disjointed like a ragdoll (the story says that he can’t move) and it will finally reach the ground making a heart shape demostrating that after a incredible journey, he finally finds love in his heart.
