Before •In medieval Europe, the mortgage was mostly coming from agriculture •The split of the empire caused the Frankish kingdom to grow weak and unstable •Crusades caused the empire grow, and the popes got much of the money from them •Most people live and work in a rural setting on farms or manors •Manors provided residents with much of what they needed and became the center of economic and social life

Changes and Continuity • England became weak financially because King John fought and lost many of the wars • Parliament controlled the collection of taxes • Crusades made the cities grow bigger and they also brought wealth to the empire
