ECLIPSE Eclipse, in astronomy, the obscuring of one celestial body by another, particularly that of the sun or a planetary satellite.
Types of Eclipse Two kinds of eclipses involve the earth: those of the moon, or LUNAR eclipses. & those of the sun, or SOLAR eclipses.
LUNAR ECLIPSE A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is between the sun and the moon and its shadow darkens the moon.
SOLAR ECLIPSE A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is between the sun and the earth and its shadow moves across the surface of the earth.
Points to A total Lunar Eclipse occur when Remember
the moon passes completely into the [earth’s] umbra.
LUNAR ECLIPSE
Points to Remember A total Eclipse is usually visible for about 3 minutes from a point in the center of the path of totality.
SOLAR ECLIPSE
Points to Remember The next total Eclipse will be visible from the U.S. in 2017.
