Weddings use more energy than you may think. There are lots of ways to have a greener wedding, which lighten the load on the environment and your pocketbook! For example, send a reply postcard rather than one that requires a return envelope. You will use less paper and save on postage. Another idea: have your wedding and reception at the same place. This saves on gas, and is one less venue to budget for. It is also very convenient for out of town guests. - Courtney Parades, Owner, Fini Event Planning

An Economical Reception If you have a tight budget, consider a Champagne and cake reception. These types of receptions generally follow afternoon or very late evening ceremonies, when guests don’t expect a full meal, and consist of a buffet, with the cake being the main attraction. Other small desserts and fruit trays can supplement the cake, and Champagne, coffee and tea are typically the main beverages.

An Open Bar Debate An open bar can be one of the most expensive parts of a wedding reception. To save cash, have a cocktail hour, and then limit the rest of the reception to wine and beer. Avoid a cash-only bar.

• Ask one of your bridesmaids to let you know when you need a touch up, and have her carry (or stash) your lipstick for a quick reapplication. • Keep a small make up bag in the bathroom for bigger touch ups – for example, your tears of joy smear your foundation! • Wear waterproof mascara to prevent the above. • Do a test run a few weeks before the wedding, so that your make up artist knows exactly the look you want. Remember: you may want to apply a bit more make up than usual for photos.

Mason jars with candles are the perfect lighting accent for your outdoor event. Fill the jar with sand and insert a candle; if you need help making it stand up straight, wet the sand before inserting or put a little hot wax on the spot the candle is to be placed. In buggy months, use a citronella candle. The effect is lovely and functional. - Jennifer Buddin, Partner, Velocity Publishing, LLC and LBB, LLC

If you want your bridesmaids to have a cohesive look, make suggestions about the jewelry you want them to wear. Keep in mind the color and cut of the dress and the formality of the event. Suggest simple and classic pieces such as studs, pendants or pearls. If you want the bridesmaids to appear completely uniform, consider giving them jewelry they can wear in the wedding as your attendant gifts.

The best piece of advice I can give a bride is…make sure you have fun! Don’t lose sight that this one beautiful day is just the beginning of many more to come. - Jacqueline Lawrence, Design Director, Duvall Catering & Event Design

Catering Trends You don’t have to limit yourself to the typical chicken, seafood or beef options at your wedding reception. Try a new catering trend for a welcomed change, like feeding your guests comfort food with a gourmet edge. Or, you can serve mini-meals, like miniature Chinese take-out boxes filled with shrimp and noodles, shot glasses with gazpacho, and sliders with unexpected toppings. To honor a family heritage, choose an ethnic-inspired menu; or if your absolute favorite meal is pizza, find a way to incorporate that.

Rehersal Dinner Technicalities Typically, the groom’s family hosts the rehearsal dinner, and no matter the style, it should never be more formal than the wedding reception. Generally, the guest list includes the wedding party, the parents, step-parents, grandparents and siblings of the couple. Any children of the bride or groom should attend. You should include spouses and significant others of the wedding party. Many couples also invite all outof-town guests as well. You will have more time to catch up with the people that traveled so far to witness your marriage!

When picking a place for your destination wedding, outline what is most important to you before you start looking. It will help streamline your planning process. Think about hotel size, number of guests, banquet area, pool, golf course, beach, etc. It surprised me how many hotels there were where our wedding would be 1 of 20 or 30 weddings that day. We wanted something more intimate for our guests, so we chose a hotel made up of little cottages – and where we were the only wedding that day. - Sarah Scherbel, Sarah Scherbel Jewelry Design 10

You want to look back on your wedding pictures with a smile – a perfectly, lip-sticked smile! For great photos, avoid shimmers – they look too dramatic on film. Matte eye shadows and blushes in classic tones photograph beautifully, and will also look gorgeous in person. To look dewy but not greasy, use a water-based foundation and a cream blush. Also, avoid high-gloss lipstick. Use a base for everything you apply so that your makeup lasts all day. And, of course, use water proof mascara!

Classic Bridal Jewelry Choose classic pieces for your wedding, jewelry that accents your best features and doesn’t compete with your gown. Earrings: Drop earrings with diamonds and pearls work well with up-dos and classically-cut gowns, but if your gown is beaded, a simple stud will look better. Necklaces: If the dress is V or U shaped, the necklace should fall halfway between your neck and the scoop of the dress. Shorter strands work better with strapless gowns. Hairpieces: Hairpins with crystals or pearls can add sparkle to an up-do, but keep them dainty to avoid looking overdone.

Many women love the look and staying power of liquid eyeliner, but are unsure how to apply it themselves, since it requires a steady hand. Try applying your regular eye pencil as close to the upper lashline as possible, then trace over that line with the liquid eyeliner. A flexible felt tip liquid eyeliner works great, or you can dip a fine-tipped brush into liquid or gel to apply. If you use liquid on the bottom lash line for long wear, slightly smudge with a cotton swab for a softer effect. - Kelly Campbell, Charleston On-Site Makeup 12

If you want your wedding photos to have a timeless feel, look for a photographer who uses creative accents on your photographs during the development process. An uneven white border added to the photos can give them an antique finish, and the use of infrared film can create a romantic and dreamy feel. To have a wide collection of photos, ask that some pictures be taken traditionally, both in color and black and white, and some be taken with the infrared film or in sepia tones.

Hairstyles for Every Wedding When choosing a hairstyle for your wedding day, consider the formality of the event. Black-Tie Wedding: Off the shoulders is the general rule, whether you choose a classic chignon or pinned-up curls. Formal Wedding: The trend for formal weddings has been a clean bun with side-parted bangs. Half-up, half-down hairstyles are also appropriate.

CONTINUED... Keep an open mind! You may have a detailed vision of your perfect wedding day, but sometimes opportunities arise that work beautifully. Maybe you thought you only wanted a strapless gown, but you found a halter on sale and it looked great. Or, maybe you thought hydrangeas were the only flower you wanted, but they weren’t in season and lilies pulled your bouquet together. Or, you opened a magazine and spotted a cupcake tower and decided that was better than one cake. - GINNY CONLON, Interior Designer

Vintage Photographs

Semi-Formal or Casual Wedding: As long as you look polished, your options are open, whether you choose an up-do, a half-up look or a free flowing one. Beach Wedding: A relaxed hairstyle suits a beach wedding, but consider the wind factor when deciding.

The bride chooses whether or not to include a groom’s cake during the wedding weekend; traditionally it is a gift from her to the groom. • Groom’s cakes are typically dark in color and either chocolate or liquor-infused. • Traditionally, the groom’s cake is served next to the bride’s cake as another option for the guests. However, the cake does not have to be served at the wedding reception; groom’s cakes work well as desserts during the rehearsal dinner too. • Have the catering staff box up slices of the groom’s cake as wedding favors for your guests. • Get creative! Design the cake to reflect the groom’s hobbies or interests.

Wedding Speech Writing Whether you are the maid of honor or simply a bride who wants to express her gratitude, wedding speech writing can seem like a daunting task. Here are a few tips to delivering the perfect speech. Practice: You may think that winging it is the way to go, but most people just feel overwhelmed and stammer for the right words. Instead, write out your speech, and practice before the big day. Include a funny anecdote: Begin the speech with a funny story about how the bride and groom met, or your first memory of them together. Just avoid embarrassing them and choose a story that is appropriate for the occasion. Keep it short: Avoid yawns; keep it short and get to the point. Tell a joke, transition to something more meaningful and honest, and then congratulate and toast to the couple. Cheers!
