The World of Professional Eating

The world of Competitive eating is one full of cutthroat competition and mouthwatering excitement. The American pastime began in 1916 on the Coney Island boardwalk when Nathans famous hotdogs hosted its first ever hot dog eating competition. The inaugural competition was a hard fought battle between four immigrants to determine who was the most patriotic. The Irishmen eventually emerged victorious after engulfing 13 of Nathans finest. The sport of competitive eating has a deep history since the inaugural battle. In 1919 New York Yankees outfielder Ping Bodie went head to head with an ostrich in a pasta eating competition, after 11 bowls of pasta the ostrich succumb to Bodie after passing out. In 1958 during the height of the Cold war, American Body Builders squared off against their Soviet Counterparts in a lobster and Pidgeon eating contest in front of 250 spectators at a New York Restaurant. And in 1963 Eddie Miller ate 27 whole chickens in San Francisco to be crowned a Guinness world record holder. Though years of competitions had occurred, it was not until the mid-1990’s that the sport really gained notoriety. Nathans hot dogs had expanded its brand and competitions. What once drew crowds of hundreds now drew crowds of thousands. The owners of Nathans Hotdogs the Shea brothers eventually established The International Federation of Competitive Eating (since retitled Major League Eating). There are now 80 to 100 events a year, with top events being broadcast on ESPN. Competitive eating has gone from obscurity to a recognized National sport and continues to grow every year.
