Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactionsHypersensitivity or known intolerance to corticosteroids, untreated bacterial or viral infections. Caution in hepatic dysfunction; or patients with pre-existing skin atrophy.
Itching. Mechanism of action and indications: Suppresses normal immune response and inflammation.
Common side effects: Derm: allergic contact dermatitis, atrophy, burning, edema. Misc: adrenal suppression with long term use.
Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically): None significant.
Lab value alterations caused by medicine: May affect adrenal function tests in long term use. May increase serum and urine glucose. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication: Wear gloves to apply, wash hands thoroughly, avoid eyes. Use sparingly.
Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess skin daily. Note degree of inflammation and pruritis.
Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? Severe burning, edema, abnormal adrenal function.
Evaluation Check after giving For resolution of inflammation and pruritis.
