(Why med ordered) Mild pain, fever.

Mechanism of action and indications Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins that may serve as mediators of pain and fever, primarily in the CNS. Have no significant antiinflammatory properties or GI toxicity

Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Previous hypersensitivity, products containing alcohol, aspartame, saccharin, sugar, or tartrazine, should be avoided. Should not exceed 4000 mg in 24 hours

Common side effects Hepatic failure, hepatotoxicity, renal failure, neutropenia, pancytopenia, leucopenia, rash, urticaria.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically)

Lab value alterations caused by medicine

Pt not on any known drugs to cause Interactions

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication

Evaluate hepatic, hematologic, and renal function periodically during prolonged high dose therapy. May alter results of glucose monitoring, falsely decrease values. Increased serum bilirubin, LDH, AST, ALT, and prothrombin time may indicate hepatotoxicity.

Take as directed, avoid alcohol, may alter blood glucose reading, check labels on all OTC medications, consult professional if fever and discomfort not relieved.

Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Overall health status and alcohol use. Assess other drugs being used by patient. Assess pain and location.

Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? If Pt has no fever or Pain. If the Pt has no need for a drug it shouldn’t be given. History of alcohol abuse, or malnourishment. It would cause a deficiency in vitamin K and since this drug is metabolized in the liver alcohol abuse would mean that the drug would become toxic not being able to be excreted from the liver.

Evaluation Check after giving Assess pain and location. Assess relief of pain and fever.
