R U Down with the King?

God knew that Israel would have a king. • He just told him to watch out for the bling. • Look at DT 17:14 • Kings were supposed to avoid accumulating stuff for themselves… specifically weapons, wives, and wealth. • The King was also supposed to write a copy of the Law for Himself. (Deuteronomy)

This wasn’t God’s endorsement of monarchy • It was his toleration of it. • Scripture doesn’t condemn kings…but it condemns kingship in the way that other nations practiced it. • Remember what happens when the sons of God mix with the daughters of men. • If we forget…Saul will remind us.

The purity of worship is compromised… by Disobedience. • Saul offers sacrifice in the wrong was y and for the wrong reasons. • Samuel reminds him…obedience is better that sacrifice.

Enter David • Samuel goes to Bethlehem to a dude named Jesse…See 1 Sam 16 • All of the obvious sons are rejected and David is chosen. • Then there is the Goliath story… • David also becomes BFF with Jonathan…Saul’s son. (awkward…) • But Jonathan was a good doobie…He kept friendship with David…even in a covenant.

Saul gets nuts • As David rises…Saul gets crazy mad… He tries to kill David, but has no shot. Its even kind of funny. Check out 1 Sam 24. • Saul eventually kills himself…a king just like the other nations. They got what they asked for.

Ishbaal • Saul’s son Ishbaal tried to take over. • It took a long civil war to knock him out. Two of Ishbaal’s generals, seeing the hopelessness, assassinated Ishbaal and brought David the head. • David had them executed. Treason didn’t impress him. He said that they had “slain a righteous man.”(2Sam4:512)

David’s virtues • David lamented Saul’s death ( 2 Sam 2:19-24) and Ishbaal’s death. He did not rejoice over misfortune. • He was a man after God’s own heart. • He wrote psalms…Loved the Law and the Covenant. • He united the tribes. • Set up Jerusalem as the capital (member mel?)

Jerusalem • David drove out the Jebusites, who lived in Jerusalem. (They had not yet been driven out and lived with the tribe of Benjamin. They were wicked dudes.) • King Hirim of Tyre sent some guys to make David a new crib in the shiny new capital. (A Palace) • Bring in the arc…bust out the new Covenant!!!

David • Got priestly in his behavior (2 Sam 6:5)…Chizedekish???? • (He donned an Ephod…) • Performed a sacrifice 2 Sam 6:12-13 • Then he handed out bread and wine… • Mizelchizeeezedekianish anyone? • David points back to Abe and forward to the ultimate priest king.

Nope…Good guess though

Nope… I see where you got that though…

Yeah. That’s more like it.

Also • He dances… • Maybe even gets naked (2 Sm 6:20) • He Loves the Lord and isn’t ashamed. Saul was just going through the motions. David was “A man after God’s heart.” • His wife made fun of him and got pretty indignant (Saul’s daughter Michal.)

Can I build a temple now? • David now wanted to build a temple. • Through the prophet Nathan God told him…. • No…….BUT • He promised him lots of other things.

Well…not that exactly

More like… • A dynasty, a kingdom, a temple built by his son, a role as God’s adopted Son, to never be disowned, and a never ending dynasty. • This was a new and better covenant for Israel!!!!

David’s Covenant reveals that God’s plan goes deeper

Si nai Tent: Temporary center of worship

National: Israel only Exclusive: Designed to keep other nations out Torah: Law to keep Israelites separate Sin Offering: offering to atone for sins

Zi on Temple: more permanent Center of worship International: All nations through Israel Inclusive: Invites nations in

Wisdom Lit.: New Torah to speak to all

7 Primary Features of the Davidic Covenant • • • •

1) Kingdom as opposed to Nation 2) Dynasty 3)adoption as God’s Son 4)Unlimited in time and space (Ps 2:8 72:8) • 5) Jerusalem, the spiritual center of the World • 6)Temple as sign of the Covenant • 7) Wisdom is the new Law (A Torah for Adam)

Even more • David’s son prefigures Christ. • David, because of the blood on his hands, can’t build the temple. • The Son of David does. • He establishes the temple. • He is the teacher of Wisdom. • (Solomon…yeah…but he isn’t the fullness…he’s got some issues.)

Back to David • Well…David wasn’t perfect. • But He can teach us something in his screw ups. • When he sins big. • He repents big. • There is the Bathsheba incident.

Look at 2 Sam 11 • Hmmm…. • Sin is bad isn’t it? • There are some consequences too…look what happens to their son • And ut-oh…Enter Absalam. • David’s son fought David, but died. • Solomon took over eventually and that is an interesting story.

The Fight is on • Absolam tries to snatch the kingdom • What a mess!!!
