DIANE

This pattern is part of a collection celebrating Romi’s online knitting friends. In her Ravatar, Diane sits beside a gorgeous expanse of rippling blue water. I can almost feel the fresh air blowing on shore. I don’t know much about her, but I do know she loves lace. Lace and water: a perfect jumping off point! When I designed Diane, the shawl, I used the traditional Feather and Fan pattern in a slightly quirky way. Designed in a series of wedges, the shaping of this shawl fits perfectly into the stitch pattern so that the wedges undulate beautifully like waves along the sea strand. Knit up in blue, it is a representation of the water she sits by. Knit up in mottled whites and browns, it reminds me of seashells.

marker, k1, w&t, placing 18 remaining sts onto extra needle to work at end of pattern (alternately, you may instead opt to hold all of the extra sts on your working needle if desired). Note: to place sts on spare needle in the correct order, remove master marker, wrap next stitch and then slip all 18 sts at end onto working needle one at a time. Next, slip same 18 sts onto spare needle and resume working as instructed.

PATTERN This shawl is constructed of a series of short-row wedges. The samples show 9 repeats of the below wedge motif with the final wedge being worked with the special finishing instructions (rows 30b-34) included for the last wedge.
Work Rows 1-30a an additional 7 times (8 times in total), then, for the final wedge, work rows 1-29, omitting row 30a. Follow instructions below to finish shawl. Last wedge finishing instructions: Row 30b (for last wedge only): kfb, k1 tbl, knit all sts, including all sts held on spare needle (leaving wraps in place), to 2 sts before end, k1 tbl 2 times Row 31: k1 tbl 2 times, knit to 2 sts before end, k1 tbl 2 times Row 32: kfb, knit to 2 sts before end, k1 tbl 2 times Bind off on RS as follows: k1 tbl, (k1, slip 2 sts back onto left needle, k2tog tbl) to end, fasten off. Finishing Weave in ends and wash using wool wash. Remove excess water from shawl and weave flexible blocking wire through top edge, following cruve and scallops. Pin blocking wires. Pat shawl and bottom edge scallops into shape. Pin out wavy edge. To assist the shawl in keeping its shape, dissolve a small amount of corn starch in hot water (approximately one half teaspoon of powder per quart of water) and use it to lightly spray pinned shawl. Knitters in humid climates should use commercial starch. When thoroughly dry, unpin and enjoy!
Repeat rows 9-12 4 additional times (rows 9-12 will be worked a total of 5 times). Row 29: (RS) k1, k2tog 3 times, (YO, k1) 2 times, YO, k1 tbl 2 times Row 30a (work row 30b instead on last wedge): (WS) CO18 using knitted CO, then work back along CO as follows: k1 tbl 2 times, knit to master marker, remove
