Welcome from the Juneau Ski Club Welcome to new and returning Development Team (DEVO) athletes! We are delighted you are participating in DEVOs and hope you will enjoy it so much you will want to continue into our Junior program. Parent participation on race days is also important, and we hope they will have as much fun as we have had over the years. Please let us know if you have any questions or if there’s anything we can do to make your experience any better. We really want DEVOs to be the most fun thing you have ever done! Doug Peel President, Juneau Ski Club Development Team (DEVOS) The DEVO program is ski racing program for athletes 9-12 years old who want to improve their skiing technique through ski training and racing. The DEVO program provides instruction for young skiers to help them refine skiing and racing skills, to instill confidence in their abilities, and to introduce them to the junior racing program. To instill fun and enthusiasm for the sport of alpine skiing. To utilize modern methodologies to teach advanced skiing fundamentals and racing techniques in various snow conditions and terrain. Provide a coach directed team atmosphere that allows the athlete to develop and learn with peers of similar age and ability. To prepare the athlete for training and competition at the Junior Team level.

Athletes must be between the ages of 9-12 as of December 31, 2009 (i.e., born in 1997-2000). Older athletes will be allowed with approval from the Junior and DEVO coaching staff. Athletes must be able to manage their own equipment.

Athletes must be able to load and ski the Ptarmigan lift independently. Athletes must wear a ski helmet at all times. Athletes must have an Eaglecrest pass or ski lift ticket – they are NOT included as part of the DEVO program. Any decision of the coaching staff regarding athlete eligibility is final. If a decision is made to move an athlete in the program, it will be discussed with the parents to find an appropriate alternative.

2009/2010 DEVO program age classes: “J4” Age 11-12 (Born 1997-1998) “J5” Age 9-10 (Born 1999-2000) DEVO training groups: A single DEVO coach will manage up to 10 athletes. Two DEVO coaches will manage 11 or more athletes. If there are two DEVO groups, athletes will be grouped based on ski ability and racing experience. DEVO coaching staff: DEVO program coaches work for the Eaglecrest Snowsports School. Training and teaching techniques are determined by a cooperative and coordinated effort of the Eaglecrest Snowsports School, the JSC Junior program coach, and the JSC Mitey Mite Coordinator. When and Where: 1. The DEVO program begins the Second Saturday that Eaglecrest is open and continues through the last race of the season April 4. 2. The DEVO program is a Saturday only session, beginning at 9:30 AM and ending at 3:00 PM. A lunch break will be included. 3. In addition to the Saturday program, there are three race Sunday’s and three 3-day camps included in the DEVO program (see the schedule below). 4. Athletes are to meet their coach(es) at the base of the Ptarmigan lift (B Frame) each training morning and are expected to be dressed and ready to train. DEVO Handbook 2009 / 2010 Season

Other DEVO program events and camps: There are three 3-day camps for the DEVO program athletes: 1. Pre-Holiday Camp December 20-22, 2009 2. Pre-New Year Camp December 27-29, 2009 3. A spring break camp during the Juneau School District’s spring vacation – dates to be determined later Parental involvement: Each week of the program, the DEVO coach will send out a newsletter to the parents via email to inform them of weekly activities. Please be sure to read this to stay up to speed on the latest and greatest DEVO news! Parent volunteers are needed for all the JSC and YSL races and events. Parents will be contacted by the DEVO coach prior to race day with requests to volunteer. No experience is necessary as we will train all race officials as needed. Each time that a DEVO athlete parent works as a volunteer during a JSC or YSL race, their name will be entered into a pool for an end-of-theyear drawing. This drawing will be for an Eaglecrest youth ski pass for the 2010/2011 season. The more times you volunteer, the more chances you have to win a pass for your athlete next year!

DEVO program parents are expected to: 1. Make sure the athletes are on time to practices and races. 2. Help athletes maintain their equipment. 3. Help athletes prepare for all weather conditions. 4. Support athletes, especially when they have had a hard training or race day. 5. Encourage open communication between athlete, coach, and parent. 6. Will be present for One mandatory Litter Free Days. DEVO Awards Race Day Awards: Ribbons will be awarded for the first through third places by sex within each DEVO training group. All other athletes in the race will receive participation ribbons. Eagle Awards: The results by age class and sex for each race will be tabulated for the overall Eagle Awards at the end of the year. For each race, finishing place points are accrued and scored using World Cup points, and trophies will be awarded at the end of the year for the top five scoring athletes in each age/sex class. No points are awarded if the athlete does not finish or is disqualified during the race. Scoring methodology is below. Please contact the DEVO coach with any questions related to the Eagle Awards. DEVO Program Fees and Registration The 2009/2010 fee for the DEVO program is $500 per athlete. This fee includes the JSC Family Membership of $30. Registration must include a signed medical release form. All forms and fees must be submitted prior to participation in the DEVO program. Forms and fees may be delivered to the Juneau Ski Club office, the DEVO coach, or the Eaglecrest Snowsports School at the Eaglecrest Lodge. Questions ?
