A new generaton is about to enter the promised land. Before Moses dies, he gives them sermons – history lessons that retell the feats of God and the laws that Israel has vowed to obey. He tells them that their future will depend on how they respond to God. “Today I am giving you a choice, you can choose life and success or death and disaster... choose life! Be completely faithful to the Lord your God, love him, and do whatever he tells you... and he will let you live a long time in the land that he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” - Moses says. (30:15, 19-20). Pass It On! (6:1-9) – Moses gives one of his speeches before he dies about the laws that the Israelites have that are different than other nations. Moses said, “The Lord told me to give you these laws and teachings, so you can obey them in the land he is giving you. At the center of the law is to worship God alone. Memorize his laws, and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you are at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.” Contract Renewal (29:1-29) – Moses reminded the people about the convenant that God made with the Israelites 40 years prior. “The Lord has made an agreement with you, and if you keep your part, you will be successful in everything you do”. Moses reminds them that their part of the bargain is to obey the laws that God provides. The bargain was for all generations. The Final Stop (34:1-12) – Moses was 120 years old. His brother and sister passed, and he spent over half his life serving God and freed the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. Moses climbs Mt. Nebo, which rises above Jordan River valley and Jericho, the “City of Palms”. At the summit, he sees the Promise Land. He dies, and is buried nearby an unmarked grave. The people grieve him for a month.
