A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by the state to an inventor in exchange of his diclosure, and that such rights are granted for a fixed period. The threefold purpose of patent law are: 1. That it fosters and reward invention; 2. It promotes disclosure of invetions to stimulate further inventions and to permit the public to practice the invetion once the patent expires, 3. The stringent requirements for patent protection seek to ensure that ideas in the public domain remain there for the free use of the public.
