FESTIVAL BRANDING: toronto urban music festival

This project consited of creating a poster and tickets for the Toronto Urban Music Festival (TUMF). The target audience encompassed teenagers and young adults, sharing a common love for RnB, Hip Hop, Rap and urban music in general. After researching the icons and typographic styles related to this music culture, it made sense for me to use a gothic typeface, along with imagery that involved graffiti and male representation. The photographs are taken by myself.

TYPOGRAPHY dekonstruction typeface + poster

“dekonstruction” is a lowercase typeface I designed in my 3rd year of design. The specific angle of the curves is consitent throughout the letterforms to give the face a consistent look. They are still different enough from each other for readability purposes. “dekonstruction” can be used as both display and copy face. The assignment also required the design of a promotional poster to display the typeface. Because I thought of my face as one that looked highly rigid and “constructed” (hence the name), I chose to give my promotional poster a strong architectural feel.

MAGAZINE COVER “colloquium” political analysis magazine

For this project, we were asked to create a magazine and to design the specboard it would follow, sample covers, one typographic spread for a given article, and a photographic translation of the same article. Mine was a political analysis magazine called “colloquium”. It targets a younger audience of readers that may or may not have political knowledge. It sought to promote political analysis in a new, fresh, witty way that would appeal to the young and inexperienced. I tried to achieve this by using bold designs, colorful graphics and unconventional typography. The following is a sample cover, showing the design of the title and the tagline, and their open interaction with the cover concept.

EDITORIAL DESIGN “colloquium” typographic spread

The following is a spread designed for the “colloquium” magazine for an article discussing the current U.S/Iran situation. The challenge was to design the spread in such a way that would not compromise the credibility of the magazine while trying to engage those young readers into what would usually would be a serious and boring read. This interpreatation of the article was to be strictly typographic, and any kind of illustration was forbidden. A way around that, for example, is the typographic solution to representating a map, that you can see on the first spread.

EDITORIAL DESIGN “colloquium” photographic spread

In this project, the same article chosen for the typographic solution had to be reinterpreted using photography as means of conveying the message. The photography had to be our own. As the article discussed nuclear power and military strategies, I had to abstrat the concept as much as possible in order to reach a metaphor that I could represent with my own photographic skills. The solution in this case was to draw analogies between military strategy and country tensions on one hand, and the chess game on the other.

HANDMADE BOOKPLATE the initials project

The following project consisted of creating a bookplate using our two initials, complemented with the full name. The bookplate was to be done manually, using 19th century conventional letterpress with metal type, which only made the compositional study harder. In my case, instead of using my two initials (“h” and “f ”), I chose to use two “f ”s in such a way that the negative space in between them would create the “h”. My full name was to be printed out through the laser printer first to avoid the oil-based ink from wrecking the printer, and then the piece was placed on the letterpress to set the type and print it manually.

TIME-BASED COMMUNICATION final resolution

This time-based piece is a counting-leader for an imaginary movie of our creation. The purpose was to create the 10 to 3 leader, along with the credits that would follow at the end of the movie. My movie was about the death of a young woman which is thought to be a murder, but then turns out to be a suicide. The counting leader uses the idea of leaving messages of one’s body, which is common in suicide cases. The numbers in the leader become the messages she leaves on her body, setting the disturbing mood of the movie and giving away hints to the spectators. The credits use the scene of the murder, her own bathroom.
