Descriptive Writing

If you were asked to describe where you are right now, what would you say?

Chances are, most of your sentences would include visual details (sunny, beautiful, mountains, grass and cement). But there is a so much more around you! First consider ALL of your senses 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Sight Sound Smell Touch Taste

Also, we have two more senses that are not usually included, but should be familiar: 1. Organic – This sense exists inside your body. When you feel sick, nervous, excited, or are so happy that you cannot sit still, you feel this sense. 2. Kinesthetic – This sense is linked with movement. How do you know when your car is moving? Have you ever seen a train pass and feel like you are moving? Children often play games that excite this sense, like rolling down a hill or spinning around quickly. Adults can alter this sense with alcohol.

EXERCISES 1. Write sentences that describe where you are right now. as many sentences as you can!

Include

2. Describe one of the following moments: a. A penalty shot (PK) – from either the perspective of a player or a fan b. A “First Kiss” c. A dangerous or “near-death” experience you have had

All of these moments are only seconds long, but they seem to last forever! This is because all of your senses become stimulated. As you play the “movie” in your mind, think about the effects on each of your senses.
