Demonstrative adjectives The adjectives are seven fractions. We have already seen the adjectives of quality; now we are going to grapple the demonstrative ones. There are only four demonstrative adjectives and they usually come before the nouns orpr onouns‘ one ’or‘ one s ’ .The ya re as follows, 1. “ Thi s ”whi c hde mons t r a t e sas i ng ul a rpe r s onorobj e c tt ha ti sc l os e : o This pen is my pen. o This is a smart girl.
2. “ Tha t ”f oras i ng ul a rf a ra wa ype r s onor thing. o That boy over there is my nephew. o That is the car my father bought yesterday.
3. “ The s e ”i st hea dj e c t i veweus et opoi ntt oagr oupofpe opl eort hi ng st ha tare near. o These shoes are expensive o These people come to see you.
4. “ Thos e ”i ndi c a t i ngag r oupofpe opl eort hi ng sf r om t woona nda r e“ ove r t he r e ” . o Those are my brothers (over there) o Those are the tools I talked about last time.
As you can see this category of adjectives is the only one that agrees with its noun in number. Don’ te a tt hi se gg .Ea tt ha t( one). c. These people are rich but those (ones) are poor. Se et ha tt hepr onouns‘ one ’a n d‘ one s ’i nt hee xa mpl e sa bovea r eputbe t we e n brackets; which means that they can be omitted as being optional. i.e. the meaning of the sentence is understood without them. I not he rs i t ua t i onst hepr onouns‘ one ’a nd‘ one s ’a f t e r“ t hi s ” ,“ t ha t ” ,“ t he s e ”or“ t hos e ” are necessary especially when there is another adjective (of quality) between the demonstrative adjective and the pronoun as in the following examples. a.
