Prayer and Meditation to Free Aung San Suu Kyi at White House What: When:
3-hour prayer and meditation Saturday June 20, 2009
12: 12: noon – 3: 00 pm
Who:
1515-20 Burmese refugee monks from around the US and supporters
Where:
in front of the White House - 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
New York: Burmese monks will gather outside the White House on the occasion of the 64th birthday of Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi to pray for her release from prison and to request a meeting with the Obama administration. The International Burmese Monks Organization (IBMO) is organizing the vigil that will include monks from all over the East Coast.
The monks are concerned with the recent arrest and imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi and her continuing trial that could lead to a five-year prison sentence. They are petitioning the Obama administration to take more direct action on Burma through sending his representative to meet directly with the junta. Further IBMO calls on the United States government to take a more active role in bringing peace and democracy in Burma through the following means: 1. Insisting on the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as the other 2000 political prisoners including over 200 monks and nuns 2. Backing a comprehensive global arms embargo against the Burmese regime; 3. Pressing for the regime to allow the ICRC full access to the prisons and labor camps. Many of the monks will be traveling from New York City to DC for the vigil. Monks from the East Coast will join them. The IBMO is chartering a bus to take many monks and their supporters to DC for the day. They will personally deliver a letter to President Obama requesting a meeting with him.
