REGIONAL CENTRE FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY Faridabad, National Capital Region INDIA
Autonomous Institution under the aegis of
Department of Biotechnology, Government of India & UNESCO
Why UNESCO Connectivity and a Regional Emphasis? The Needham paradox: Although developing societies/economies traditionally use empirical technologies for social betterment, they face critical gaps in connecting science with technology innovations of local utility Thus, a diversity of locally driven perspectives on one hand, and excellence of global standards on the other would be essential in order to generate competitive human resource for the developing world

Vaccine and Infectious Disease Research Center (VIDRC) at Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI)
Vision To improve human health through research directed at the prevention, intervention, and therapy for infectious diseases that pose a serious threat to humanity
Mission To study infectious diseases and pathogens to generate translatable knowledge for developing prophylactic and therapeutic measures against diseases prevalent in India
Aims and Objectives In pursuit of its mission, the VIDRC will:
Conduct a comprehensive research program spanning basic through translational research,
Serve as a national resource for biomedical researchers by providing access to qualified scientists,
Establish partnerships with industry and academia
Develop national and international collaborations, and
Serve as a center of excellence for training future researchers in the fields of science and technology relevant to the vaccine and infectious disease research
Vaccine Research at VIDRC Identify virulence properties of the pathogens through studies of molecular pathogenesis to construct vaccine candidates and their pre-clinical evaluation. Develop of novel vaccine delivery systems including recombinant viral vectors.
Assess the suitability of candidate vaccines in clinical studies. Measure human immune responses to vaccines. Evaluate the efficacy of candidate vaccines in large-scale field trials. Advise governments and health management agencies on vaccine policy.
Infectious Disease Research at VIDRC Strengthen basic and applied research on the pathogen, host and environmental factors that influence disease emergence Use knowledge of pathogen, host, and environment interactions to enhance our ability to predict and prevent conditions that lead to human disease Support sequencing and post-genomics research of emerging infectious disease agents and animal vectors to reveal genetic basis for pathogen evolution, adaptation, and pathogenicity Develop new strategies to control diseases that are re-emerging due to drug or insecticide resistance and identify better control strategies for intractable infectious diseases that continue to challenge global health Maintain and develop the scientific expertise required to respond to future health threats by supporting research and training programs
