Written by Lee G. Brockington Photos are Courtesy of Pam Kerschner/Belle Baruch Foundation Hobcaw Barony was the winter residence of Wall Street financier Bernard Baruch, a veritable Shangri La, as he described the eleven former rice plantations on the lower end of the Waccamaw Neck. His daughter, Belle Baruch, sportsman, sailor, equestrian, pilot and conservationist, last owned the property and dedicated it as a research reserve in 1964. Today, universities use the land as an outdoor laboratory and the public may participate in guided tours and programs.

Bernard Baruch, native South Carolinian and New York millionaire, bought 17,500 acres in 190507, recreating the colonial barony, once given by the king of England to a Lord Proprietor of the colony. Baruch's goal was to create a winter home for his wife and three children and a hunting retreat for his friends, who included senators, congressmen, cabinet members, journalists, artists and world leaders, most notably Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. "One-hundred duck days" were common and added to the wild game logbook that included deer, turkey, quail, woodcock, dove, and wild hog. Arriving to the area by yacht and train, many northerners discovered the bounty of the woods and the waters and by 1935, scarcely a South Carolina coastal plantation was still owned by southerners. Each winter from Thanksgiving to Easter, the "migration" began and families spent the winter holidays not only searching for wild game, but also native greenery, firewood, and mistletoe to adorn the former plantation houses or "modern" hunting lodges.

For several years, staff and volunteers decorated Hobcaw House, as seen on the cover, and have since presented programs such as, "Christmas in the Quarters," featuring descendants of former ministers of the village church of Friendfield Plantation at Baruch's Hobcaw. This fall, the newly completed 10,000 square feet Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center opened to the public and features new exhibits, a huge aquarium and the voices of former residents of the plantation. December 2009 programs include a sneak peak at Belle Baruch's home and a special winter afternoon program for families. "Bellefield Before the Restoration" features the interior of the house, slated for future renovation, and a tour of her fine stables and expansive grounds. As a child, she had longed to own a part of Hobcaw and at the Christmas dinner table in 1935, her father announced he would sell her 5000 acres on the northern end of the barony. Come see what brought Belle such happiness and led to the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. A "Holiday Hayride at Hobcaw" is a simple way to spend some of the holidays outside, traveling down dirt lanes behind a tractor. See why Belle called this plantation "the friendliest woods in the world" as you stop and go over the roads that lead to special areas of Hobcaw's past.

Bellefield Before the Restoration Thursday, December 10 or Friday, December 11 9:30 am - 12:30 pm • $20 Tour the house and grounds of Bellefield Plantation before restoration begins on Belle Baruch’s home at Hobcaw. Completed in 1937, the country estate was lived in until 2003 when Belle W. Baruch Foundation trustees began to plan for the funding of restoration and eventual use of the main house, stable, kennel, poultry barn, greenhouse and garage. Recently featured in Veranda Magazine and examined by interior designers, architectural historians and preservation consultants, Bellefield has stories to tell even before the work begins. Join Richard Camlin and Lee Brockington on a short drive under the oaks and through the gates. Please reserve a space by calling 546-4623.
Hobcaw Fly Fishing Adventure By Appointment • $250/person Join Capt. Steve Thomas, an experienced fly fishing guide in Alaska for 5 years, and enjoy the beauty and wildlife of Hobcaw as you wade or kayak through the pristine salt marsh creeks and flats of North Inlet. Due to the nature of this type of fishing, a maximum of two anglers per trip is allowed. Put your skills to the test for flounder, speckled trout and redfish (this is a catch and release program; photographs of your catch are available upon request). When scheduling your fishing trip, please keep in mind that early morning or late evening usually results in better fishing than mid-day. Each trip lasts approximately 3-4 hours. You may bring your own equipment or use fishing gear and flies provided by your guide. If you are not an experienced fly fisherman, lessons can be provided. For more information, call Steve Thomas at 843-397-0592 or 843-997-6981 or online at www.gofishsc.com.

WE MAKE IT HAPPEN! Why Use A Realtor?

The Moveable Feast
This popular series of literary luncheons, each featuring an exciting author at different Waccamaw Neck restaurants, is held every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Most feasts are $25 and followed by a signing at Litchfield Books at 2 p.m. Reservations are requested by the Wednesday prior to the feast. A gift certificate for the booklovers on your list is always a thoughtful and welcome gift! The new Winter 2010 schedule is available onsite in the Litchfield Exchange, online at www.classatpawleys.com or by phone, 235-9600. Dec. 4 - Nicole Seitz (Saving Cicadas) at Ocean One ($25). A novel of unconditional love and the freedom of letting go. When single mother Priscilla Lynn Macy learns she’s having another child unexpectedly, she packs the family into the car to escape. Eight-year-old Janie and Rainey Dae, her seventeen-year-old sister with special needs, embark on the last family vacation they’ll ever take with Poppy and Grandma Mona in the back seat. The trip seems aimless until Janie realizes they are searching for the father who left them years ago. Through eyes of innocence, Janie learns the hard realities of life and the difficult choices grownups make. And she must face disturbing truths about the people she loves in order to carry them in the moments that matter most. Dec. 11 - Matt Lee & Ted Lee (Simple, Fresh, Southern: Knockout Dishes with Down-home Flavor) at Tara Ballroom at Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort ($25). Authors of the award-winning Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook, Matt and Ted grew up in Charleston, immersed in the flavorful traditions – long-simmered gumbos, fish-frying marathons, whole-hog barbecues – that have made southern food the most beloved of American cuisines. But they also came of age in the company of two hardworking parents who enlisted them in making dinner happen. As teens they learned that even the most routine weeknight family meals could be indulgences, as you long as you’ve got stellar ingredients, some wise kitchen counsel and – perhaps most important – you’re having fun in the kitchen. That’s the genesis of their new book – easy, healthy dishes for every day, that don’t compromise an ounce of deep southern flavor. Dec. 18 - Philip Powell Annual Piano Concert at DeBordieu Clubhouse ($35) Continuing his tradition of nonliturgical music for the holidays, Dr. Powell will play selections in anticipation of the upcoming 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth and his spring course for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute “Chopin: Poet of the Piano.” Several of the composer’s most beloved and dramatic works will be performed: The First Ballade, The Barcarolle and a selection from Powell’s exciting new CD, Nocturne: 200 Years of Piano Nocturne.

Relay For Life is a Life Changing Event!
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 19 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, we are creating a world with more birthdays a world where cancer can’t claim another year of anyone’s life. Anyone can participate in Relay For Life. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, sports teams, etc., can form their own teams. No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Relay. The only requirement to participate in Relay For Life is the $10 registration/commitment fee (per person) that is due upon registration. After that, anything you can raise through individual, team, or online fundraising is graciously accepted. It is recommended that each participant to set a personal goal to raise $100. If you raise more, that's even better. Even if you do not raise $100, you are still welcome to participate. If you want to be part of Relay, you can start a team or join an existing team online. You can also make an online donation by going to www.RelayForLife.org

––––––––––––––––––––––– Do you sometimes think about the “way things used to be”? The old days when a handshake was good enough and people pulled together to help one another without expecting something in return? Has this lifestyle gone to the wayside? At Select Homes & Services, we don’t think so and we strive everyday to prove it! We run our company as a “Profession” instead of a “Business”. What’s the difference? We don’t just look at the bottom line we also take into account how we got there. We realize that there are lots of people involved in our operation and success and we know that if we run our company with integrity and compassion for our clients, agents and each other our bottom line will continue to increase. If we can all get past the “what’s in it for me attitude” and realize that we’re all in this thing called life together I believe we can recapture the philosophy and atmosphere of those times gone by.
INTEGRITY is a big word and concept to live up to and at Select Homes & Services, we are up for the challenge. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––

An Epic Story of Love and Faith
The Ultimate Story of Seduction
A Perfectly Choreographed Thriller
Nestled within the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains, with their ever-present blue haze and trumpet-shaped rhododendron blossoms, Laurel Springs, North Carolina is just a poor little mountain town. The beauty within its colorful summer blossoms and pristine setting deceptively overshadows the hardships of mountain life. This is where Jake Miller and Callie Baker were born. It is where they grew up fighting the rocky soil for their existence just as the wildflowers did. And it is where they fell in love. After their first taste of forbidden passion, they make a promise to each other. But an accident soon takes Jake’s memory of that promise. Callie, unaware that Jake is hospitalized with a life-threatening head injury, feels abandoned and deceived. She is seized with horror and joy when she realizes there is new life within her. Jake and Callie’s journey is an epic story of love and faith. A love that is as bold and beautiful as the mountains themselves!
It was September, and the breeze over the Atlantic was still warm. Softly it caressed the shapely bodies of three young women as they sat outside on the deck of the Garden City Pier delicately sipping on wine coolers. Charlene suddenly felt her desire awaken, and she knew it was time to go home. She knew Nathan would be at home and in bed waiting for her. Naked! Meredith was thoroughly jealous of Charlene and Nathan’s relationship and never missed an opportunity to insinuate that Nathan was but a mere mortal man, and, therefore, he would find a way to cheat. Thankfully, Leigh didn’t share Meredith’s views. Finally exasperated with Meredith’s snide remarks, Charlene stated that if she were a betting person, she’d bet that Nathan would never cheat. “What does the winner of the bet get? Besides, Nathan?” Meredith teased wickedly. “There isn’t going to be a bet!” Charlene replied. “Wanna bet?” Meredith asked.
The rush of ripping off her business suit and dressing to go out to play was almost as intoxicating as the tequila she was getting ready to consume. She could feel the devilish itch of her angelic wings as she headed for the flight deck - the Garden City Pier. Then it happened! A mid-air collision sent her frozen concoction of a drink flying through the air. The man it landed on didn’t show any outward signs of imposing danger. Playfully, she bent over and licked the melting drink as it ran down the side of his face. When she turned to leave, he grabbed her arm. “You just think you’re finished. Just how are you going to clean up the drink on my pants?” he asked as he stood and showed her the strategicallyplaced wet spot. “How do I know that’s my drink?” she teased. “You’ll have to trust me,” he replied. “There isn’t enough tequila in the world for that,” she laughed. Then he decided to push his luck and her buttons.

Local Artist Strives to Give Back to the Community Written by Joe Luzzi As a young soldier on leave walks by his airbrush shop on Ocean Blvd. at 3rd Avenue south, Nathan West steps down from his easel, offers his hand and a hearty “Thanks for your Service”. Veterans hold a special place in this Americans’ heart and is reflected in the airbrush works he creates live during our local bike rallies. Seals of all the branches of our military are emblazoned on huge banner canvasses with screaming eagles and waving flags in the backgrounds. Among other spellbound bikers, I watched as he created this strikingly colorful piece in less than an hour, trying to guess along the way, what it will become. Just as he finished, a War Veterans Biker group passed in front of his stand, he stopped them to present this stunning mural, free, to the applause of the crowd. “Thanks for your sacrifice,” he told them. Nathan also donated several large “powerful” religious murals to Glenns Bay Baptist Church which greet the parishioners on entering. It has an effect on everyone the first time they see this spectacular artwork, which is describe as ‘breathtaking’ and ‘humbling’. A cartoon mural adorns the children's room. “I felt a little closer to God while creating those scenes” he laments. Raised in Frankfurt, Kentucky, Nathan savored drawing through high school and learned airbrush, oil painting and watercolor art, just from watching his older sister paint. The 40+ year old Nathan, is a single father of two boys; aspiring artists themselves, and has lived in Surfside for the last several years. He has created airbrush designs on jeans for fashion giant, Calvin Klein, and had numerous airbrush stores along the New Jersey shore boardwalks. Art, bigger than life, is his specialty – which you can see as you flip through the pages of his catalogs featuring airplanes, helicopters, tractor trailers, boats, cars, and of course motorcycles. The subjects are colorful with deep, fine lines of original artwork. “The larger the canvas the better,” Nathan says, while putting the finishing touches on a painting at the new Café Italia Restaurant. His artistic creation of a sprawling tree design, flowing from the bar, to the wall, then to the ceiling, was complemented with mini lights in the leaves that give the impression of being in a garden at night. The very talented Mr. West, now spends his time concentrating on painting beautiful murals in private homes and businesses throughout the area.
You can get a FREE estimate in your home or business by calling Nathan West at 386-341-9179.

Happy Holidays!
Christmas Gift: Easy Steps to Mail your Present Sometimes you don’t get to see all of your loved ones during the holidays. That doesn’t mean you can’t include them in your Christmas gift giving. Mailing gifts has become increasingly more common, but you must take the proper precautions so your gift arrives safely. CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTAINER The first step in shipping your gift is choosing the proper packaging. There are several container options: • Boxes • Large Envelopes • Padded Bags • Tubes The container you select should have enough room for your gift and adequate padding, but not so large that the gift rattles or shifts. If you are sending liquids, you should first place the item in a leak proof container and then double box it. Books ship nicely in padded envelopes, and posters in special poster tubes. For most purposes, a sturdy cardboard box is the best option. PROTECTING THE GIFT One of the biggest fears in mailing a gift is that it will arrive in pieces. Protecting your gift with appropriate cushioning can easily prevent this. Giving your gift padding distributes and helps absorb shock and keeps the gift from shifting. Cushioning options can be purchased at your local shipping supply store, or sometimes found around your home: • Packing Paper • Newspaper • Plastic Bubble Wrap

If your gift is very fragile, take extra care in wrapping it. First, wrap the gift in a generous amount of bubble wrap. Then, layer any cushioning material you want to surround the bubble-wrapped gift in a box. It is best to avoid mailing breakable items, but it can be done when packaged properly. INSURANCE OR NO INSURANCE? You should purchase insurance for your package if its monetary value is high or if your package is very fragile and you are concerned about it arriving in one piece. Shipping insurance covers the value of your package’s contents, and includes delivery confirmation. Also, shipping insurance gives you peace of mind and insures your gift will be replaced if destroyed during transit.

WRAPPING THE GIFT Some people skip over the gift wrapping when they mail their gifts. Just because you aren’t delivering the gift in person doesn’t mean you don’t have to wrap it. Your gift should be gift-wrapped and then placed inside your shipping box. If you skip over the wrapping, your Christmas gift becomes a mere package. It is more fun to open a colorfully wrapped gift box than a plain, brown shipping box. You may even want to include a note from Santa, instructing the recipient NOT to open the gift until Christmas day.

PASTA WHEN TO SEND THE GIFT If you include instructions from you (or Santa) to the gift recipient that encourages him or her to restrain from opening your package until Christmas day, then you can mail your gift as early as you would like. Postal and Mailing Service’s busiest day of the year is usually the week before Christmas. Mailing your gift extra early may allow you to avoid long lines. You can expect your gift to arrive within five days when mailed via Parcel Post. Priority Mail speeds that time up to two or three days, and there are overnight options (but they are costly). Make sure you send your gift early enough to arrive in time for the holiday. source: www.articlesbase.com

1 (3 to 5-pound) duck, giblets removed 1 orange 1 sprig fresh thyme, chopped 1 sprig fresh rosemary, chopped 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons sugar 3 Earl Grey tea bags 3 cups water 2 tablespoons molasses
The Conway Oak-Credit: Rob Mills
Directions: Place duck in a medium glass bowl breast side up. Use your fingers separate the skin from the meat without tearing it. Cut the orange in half and squeeze over the duck, then place the rinds in the cavity. In a small bowl, mix together the thyme, rosemary, 1 tablespoon salt and the pepper. Sprinkle mixture all over the duck. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, rotating the duck after 2 hours so the breast side is down. In the bottom of a pot with a steamer insert, combine the sugar, tea bags, and water and bring to a simmer. Place marinated duck in steamer legs down and cover. Steam for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Preheat rotisserie to 275 degrees F.

In a medium glass bowl, mix together remaining salt and the molasses. Rub the mixture over the steamed duck. Place the duck on the spit. Cook duck for 1 hour or until meat is cooked through and skin is crispy. Remove from oven and let rest for 20 minutes before carving.

“Legendary” Celebrity Performers To Debut On Norwegian EPIC In Renowned Legends In Concert Show
Great Holiday Entertainment With Some Of Your Favorite Stars
Longest-running independently owned production show on the Las Vegas Strip joins Norwegian Epic’s impressive roster of world-class entertainment Submitted by Chris Beattie, Marketing Director Legends in Concert, Surfside Beach
Norwegian Cruise Line announced that Legends in Concert, the original and world’s greatest live tribute show, will be featured for the first time at sea in more than a decade on Norwegian Epic, the company’s largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising ship to date, debuting in June 2010. A staple on Las Vegas’ center strip for the past 25 years, Legends in Concert is known as the pioneer of live tribute shows and has assembled the greatest collection of live tribute artists and celebrity look-alikes in the industry. “Norwegian Epic has already made headlines with its world-class entertainment offerings, featuring Blue Man Group and Cirque Dreams™ and Dinner. Now, with the addition of Legends in Concert, we have raised the bar even higher, taking cruise ship entertainment to a whole new level, on par with major entertainment hubs like Las Vegas and New York,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “With their wide range of incredibly talented superstar tribute artists and celebrated entertainers, Legends in Concert will appeal to music fans of all ages, making this a must-see show for our guests. Legends in Concert is a live musical celebration featuring the world’s greatest celebrity tribute artists such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Tina Turner, Madonna, Garth Brooks, Rod Stewart, Cher, Barry White, Tim McGraw and Shania Twain, among many others. Legends in Concert on Norwegian Epic will feature three celebrity tribute performers taking the stage in the Epic Theater for six 45-minute shows over three days during a seven-day cruise. In addition, a cabaret-style show will be performed on three additional nights in the Manhattan Room, the ship’s New Yorkinspired supper club, providing an unprecedented dining and entertainment experience. The celebrity performers will change every four months, keeping the show fresh and exciting.

Each universally-renowned Legends in Concert performer not only looks and sounds like the star they portray, they transform themselves through hours of practice at their craft. This is accomplished by using their own natural voices and every detail is taken into consideration from choreography, to hair, make-up and mannerisms. “We are thrilled about this new long-term multi-dimensional partnership with Norwegian and are honored to be invited to perform weekly on board this exceptionally innovative ship, joining the most prolific entertainment line-up ever assembled on the high seas,” said Brian Brigner, chief operating officer for “Legends” producer On Stage Entertainment. “We will have the highest quality tribute acts in the world performing on Norwegian Epic, and they will be joined by the always electrifying Legends singers and dancers, and a rockin’ live band.” In addition to world-class entertainment, the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic incorporates many innovations including several new types of accommodations – the curved New Wave staterooms; the largest ship-within-a-ship suite complex at sea, comprising 60 suites and villas on two private decks at the top of the ship; and spa and family-friendly accommodations. The ship also boasts unique nightlife options with the first Ice Bar at sea and Spice H20 with non-stop entertainment day and night; an expansive Aqua Park with the only tube slide and largest bowl slide at sea -The Epic Plunge; seven decks of Freestyle Family Fun with highlights including a 33-foot high, 64-foot wide extreme rock climbing wall and the first ever rappelling wall at sea; the most bowling lanes at sea with six in two venues; a mixed-use sports deck with the ability for guests to engage in eight different athletic activities; as well as three separate kids’ and teen activity areas. Jump
your “WAIST” into better shape! A lot of people think of jumping rope as more of a game or a kid's toy . . . the ironic thing is that it is actually an extremely effective form of exercise. Almost every person I know could easily walk at a brisk pace for 15 minutes, but I bet less than 1% of the population could jump rope for that long. So What Muscle Groups Does Jumping Rope Target? The answer is just about every muscle in the body. I think it works muscles that rarely get used. After my first time jumping rope, I was sore in many muscle groups…especially in the calf muscles and abs. In fact, if you are really trying to get ripped abs, jumping rope will help big-time. Your core really gets worked hard since your abs have to contract to stabilize your entire body as it propels through the air.
Jumping Rope Helps Release Your Fat Burning Hormone (HGH). HGH is a hormone that your body releases naturally, which burns body fat like crazy. Increasing your natural level of HGH in your body is your quickest route to burning body fat. Unfortunately, low intensity cardio won't assist your body in releasing HGH. The proven way to increase HGH is to alternate high intensity cardio for 30 seconds followed by 30-60 seconds of rest…this is called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
Tips On Purchasing a Jump Rope For about $15, you can get a "Speed Rope" at most sporting good stores. They are basically plastic ropes without the beads…make sure it is "adjustable" as well. This is extremely important!
How to Get The Correct Adjustment on Your Jump Rope • Place Your Jump Rope on the Ground • Stand on the Midpoint of the Rope (an equal distance between the handles) • Grasp the Handles and Pull them to Your Chest While Standing on the Rope • The Top of the Handles Should Reach About 6 Inches Below the Collar Bone (not as high as the collar bone or as low as the upper abs…If in doubt, go a bit too long and shorten the rope a bit as you get more experienced)
Learning the Skill of Jumping Rope, Your First Two Weeks of the Program Most beginners "double bounce" in between rotations. This actually allows them to rest their core a bit as well as their calf muscles in between rotations and means that they have a low level of core fitness. You will want to jump cleanly in between each rotation and keep the abs and core tight. Your arms should barely move when you jump rope. The rotation of the rope should come from wrist movement. If you want to increase the speed of the rotations, simply increase the tightness of the circles that your wrist is making (this will make more sense when you start jumping rope). The goal of your first two weeks of jumping rope is to eventually work up to a point where you can jump rope for 5 minutes solid without having to stop and start again. This means that if you have to stop because the rope hits your feet, you have to start again from zero. You also want to be able to jump rope alternating feet, so it looks like you are running while jumping rope.
A Great 15 Minute Jump Rope Workout • Stand in front of a clock or timer of some sort • Jump Rope for 3 minutes to warm up • Rest for 30 seconds • Jump rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds • Rest for 30 seconds • Jump Rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds • Rest for 30 seconds • Repeat this alternating pattern for 15-20 minutes Note: There are several things you can do to customize your workout - you can do the whole workout using the "running in place" method of jumping, you can learn how to spin the rope twice for every one jump, etc…as you get really advanced you will find that you will be able to spin that rope at blazing speed and that 60 minute sprint will be extremely intense. Also, if you want to take advantage of the fast heart rate and burn even more body fat, hit a treadmill or exercise bike for Source: fitnessblackbook.com Updated August 7, 2009 20-30 minutes after your jump rope workout.
