December 8, 2009 A compromise means each side gives a little in order to solve a problem. We have all done this at times. When do you think it is useful to compromise? When have you compromised?

Homework: 



How far are you willing to compromise? Are you usually willing to meet people half way? When might you be willing to meet someone more than halfway?

Slavery and the Constitution Ask people how the Constitution addresses slavery and most people won’t know  The answer is – the Constitution doesn’t say a lot about slavery, but it does say a few things 

Fugitive Slave Clause 





If a slave ran from a slave state to a free state they had to be returned One state cannot forbid the return of runaway slaves Later codes were much stronger

The 3/5 Compromise: 





Should slaves be counted as people for the purpose of taxes? Should slaves be counted as people for the purpose of determining representation? Compromise – 3/5 for both

Slave trade After 1808 the slave trade would end  The slave ships were just too inhumane to be allowed to continue  Britain ended the slave trade as well 

Abolition of slavery in the North  



A gradual process Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire ended slavery Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island ended slavery Gradually

Internal slave trade    

Sale of “used” slaves Sale of the children of slaves Northern slaves sold south Slaves from Maryland Virginia and Delaware sold to the deep south

The Northwest Ordinance 

 

There was a great deal of territory that was not yet a state Should slavery be allowed? First decision was the Northwest Territories and the decision was no to slavery
