Boldly proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ 2

Is the way of the Lord a truly Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many narrow there be which path? go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Luke 13:23-24, “Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” Strive - to endeavor with earnestness; to labor hard, struggle, fight. After reading these scriptures, you may be confused and concerned. Most have been told salvation is as easy as repeating a very simple prayer. Both paths are open to all – Why so many on the broad path and so few on the narrow? Why do many seek the narrow but are not able to enter? What are you being saved If you answered hell, you’re wrong! John 10:1, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but from? climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” True to human nature (fallen) many seek to enter their way. Many will twist Christ’s very words to do it – or add some of theirs. John 10:4, “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.” Do you just acknowledge Christ or do you follow Him? Do you know His voice? John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved…” America has long been characterized as a Christian nation composed of individuals with an independent self-sufficient outlook on life. Are these things really compatible with Christ’s gospel? Let’s take a look at some of the values that are stressed in American culture and that of the Western world – Just what is being taught?

1. Self Confidence:

You can do anything that you set your mind to. Be all that you can be! Dress for success. Have a positive mental attitude. Be in charge (control). Trust in your own abilities and constantly seek to improve yourself through education, skills, and ingenuity. Mind over matter – there’s nothing you can’t do. Beat the next guy! Dreams will come true! 2. Self Sufficient: Depend/rely on no one. Make your own way – be your own man (boss). Invest in your future. Money is power. Golden rule - He who has the gold makes the rules. Be independent. Set for life – retire early. Dog eat dog world. For a rainy day.

3. Self Centered: You work hard and deserve the things you have. Big I, little you. Have it your way! I know the things I like! Speedy service – the customer is always right. Get all you can – He who has the most toys wins. Deny yourself nothing. Never be satisfied with second best. You deserve a break today! If it feels good – do it! Pay yourself first. 4. Pride: Be proud of yourself and all your accomplishments. Proud to be an American! Self exaltation – thinking of yourself more favorably than others. I’m special! I deserve better!

4

Things of the World:

Those worldly traits may provide you with some success in this physical world (carnal/fleshly), but they will surely be the spiritual eternal death of you. James 4:4, “…know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” Love not the Philippians 2:21, “For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.”

world

The Issue: The issue from the beginning (Garden of Eden) has always been about pride

and self. Pride is the exalting of oneself above one’s intended (created) position. Lucifer fell (Isaiah 14:12-16, Ezekiel 28:13-17) for this reason – he wanted to become God. Man chose to become independent and choose good and evil for himself – apart from God. This was/is rebellion against the creator – God! The basis of all sin – Pride - SELF, the desire/act to exert your will over God’s. To be self-pleasing is the very essence of sin - to determine your own life – to control your destiny - to exert your will in all things! Satan still believes that his desire will ultimately prevail over God’s will. Most men also live their lives in such a way as to think that their will can prevail over God’s in the end. They think that God is just going to see things their way. God is absolutely in control and is making an open show before all His creation of the consequences of wickedness upon those who choose to rebel against Him. Choose your side because an end is coming soon. The

Judgment 5

The path to salvation as spoken by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in : for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” To be poor in spirit would be to recognize your inabilities and limitations and your great need spirit for God. This is to be a beggar crying in need of help – brokenness before God – pleading for God’s mercy. This is a humbling of oneself before God – a perpetual dependence upon God. This is a constant attitude of need – reliance upon God rather than flesh. Realizing that you are nothing, have nothing and can do nothing. This is an emptying the heart of self such that Christ may fill it. You realize that you have nothing to offer God from self. Your best works of righteousness far miss the mark of God’s expectations – they are as filthy rags. You realize that nothing you could ever do on your own merits could warrant God’s acceptance or justify you.

Utter Helplessness Humble

Broken Emptied

Destitute

This is a setting aside of self, a d self-loathing, a self rejection in all respects, a casting away all hope in yourself, all self dependence, all trust in our own wisdom or righteousness, or your efforts at sanctification, and every thing else which is your own. The one who is poor in spirit recognizes their absolute wickedness and just condemnation. Only at this point can one acknowledge that Christ is the only possible hope for their helpless condition. You now begin to seek God. Mankind must see their need

for Christ 6

Being poor in spirit would be the opposite of being prideful, arrogant and self-willed. There is no self confidence, sufficiency, interest or assertiveness regarding your own efforts. The poor in heart’s plea is: Luke 18:13-14, “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”



Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are they that : for they shall be comforted.” To mourn is to realize the sinfulness in your life - to have deep regret and godly sorrow for past mourn thoughts and deeds – your own and those you have committed against others. To realize your wickedness and your own inability to correct the condition - to be in agony/contrition concerning how you have transgressed God’s will (been displeasing) and brought shame and dishonor upon God. Deep heartfelt sorrow for past sins is not sufficient and must be accompanied with a desire to forsake all sin in your life. This is to mourn after the sin itself and not just the consequence or penalty (hell). The primary concern is that you have sinned against the loving God causing a separation. You see that sin was such displeasure with the Holy Righteous God that rather than excuse it or overlook it, He sent His only son to be the sacrifice for your sins to make atonement. You must realize that your way has been a failure and that

7 your only hope is to turn to God – He is where the comfort is. You realize that you must die to yourself and start living a life that conforms to God’s will and that only Jesus Christ make Yielded tocanGod True mourning is always accompanied by a but change in one’s life. Mourning is alsodesire a this happen. You’re no longer self-centered God-centered. Those who mourn continuing attitude throughout life and a constant self examination is grieved by reconciliation with God. You understand that forsaking your old lifewhereby not onlyone means to abandon any transgression God’s will inaspects their life. sorrow and grieve for all for it butpersonal also to not look back against favorably on sinful of it.You Thisalso is true repentance – a hatred the by others around you and thesovereign wickedness of the world. yoursin sincommitted and an unconditional surrender to the willinofand God. To be blessed in mourning seems like a paradox but it brings one to the place of seeing their need for Christ to realizing how precious His sacrifice for us really is. PENITENCE Romans 2:4, “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” Isaiah 55:7, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” See the shame of thy nakedness

8

Isaiah 59:2, “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” Mourn over sin Proverb 28:13, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Mourn over separation from God Psalm 86:5, “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all Can you claim that you mourn over them that call upon thee.”

 sin? 

Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek : for they shall inherit the earth.” We must strive day after day against the sin of pride and rebellion. By nature we are quick to justify self. We tend to be self-centered, but spiritual meekness is God-centered. True meekness submits to God's sovereignty (as righteous and just) and justifies the Lord even in your own condemnation. Meekness is to be yielding and submissive to God’s divine will – a dying to self. Job was stripped of everything he owned, yet he never defended himself, but said: Job 1:21, “Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” The first full demonstration of meekness is to be able to surrender everything to the will of God - commit everything unto Him that judgeth righteously. To be meek is to be able to take correction graciously – to put aside all

9

self-righteousness – not to complain under God’s chastening. Psalms 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” The Lord's honor is more important than your own. When the honor of God is being destroyed, we must defend His honor and His truth (Word). We must understand that meekness is not standing for our own honor. It is standing for God's honor. Meekness is also forbearance under injuries. We must be able to be reviled without reviling again. We must be able to suffer without threatening. Spiritual meekness is how we view ourselves with regards to others – not preferring yourself. Not proud or self1 Peter 2:19-20, “For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, sufficient suffering wrongfully.” Thankworthy is showing gratitude for Christ's suffering. Christ suffered wrongfully. Thou art the potter, I am the clay. Mold me & shape me – Christ’s Jesus meekness was prophesied. Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the meekness: slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” Matthew 11:28-30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (also 2 Timothy 2:25)

10

Titus 3:2-5, “To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.” Also 1 Thes 5:15

Palms 22:26, “The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness him: your heart shall live for ever.” Let of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Php 2:3





Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousne : for they shall be filled.” Read Titus 2:14 ss Hunger and thirst are two distinct needs that every human has and understands. The lack of either will soon weaken one and eventually result in physical death. You cannot have just one and not the other (need both to survive). The combined effect of the two produces a restless craving and desperate longing. Hungering and thirsting after righteousness is a continuing process that never ends and is a matter of eternal life or spiritual death. This craving follows you throughout your daily life (not just on one day of the week). The truly repentant are concerned that these spiritual needs will not be met. Thus Jesus said you are blessed in this condition because you will be filled. Jesus is the bread of life (broken body of Christ) that we must hunger after to be made righteous. Jesus redeemed us with His blood from a debt that we could not pay and gave us

11

justification before God the Father. John 10:9, “I (Jesus) am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out (justification), and find pasture (satisfy hunger).” Nothing short of Christ's righteousness will satisfy your hungry soul – no good works on your part. The Holy Spirit is the living waters that you must thirst after for purification. To thirst for righteousness is the desire that all things offensive to God be removed from your heart – to be cleansed from all sin and wickedness. Any sin in your life should be a great source of grief to you. The Holy Spirit works within to sanctify you – to lead you daily and you must yield to God’s will as convicted. This is not becoming righteous in your own strength but living within Christ’s strength, power and ability. Psalm 63:1, “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;” The Spirit will lead in paths of righteousness to holiness. Hebrews 12:14, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” Those seeking righteousness apply the Word of God to their lives and gladly live within it – The Holy Spirit gives you this ability. That which is impossible to man becomes possible through God. Isaiah 55:1-2, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?

Righteousness - Purity of heart and correctness of life

12

hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself infatness.” Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…” John 4:14, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 6:51, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the Righteousness - conformity of life to the divine law world.” 1 John 3:3, “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” 1 John 3:7, “Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, Read 1 Thessalonians 4:7 even as he is righteous.”

  Significance: The first four beatitudes explain the work of regeneration whereby God

creates in you a new heart (Ps 51:10, Ez 36:26). 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” The next three beatitudes detail the fruits of conversion – evidences of regeneration. Conversion is what comes out of a man. The evil thoughts, hard attitudes, and unmerciful spirit must be converted. The work of conversion is the work of grace as well as the work of regeneration.

13

14

The work of conversion is the evidence. It is the fruit. Jesus said: Matthew 7:20, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” This new heart is seen in one’s life through one’s actions. Conversion is continuous and progressive. The conversion of the heart or the fruits of regeneration are shown in the last three beatitudes. The Pharisees (religious) so missed (Mat 5:20) what God desired. They thought they had salvation due to their outward righteousness (they kept the letter of the law). Their hearts were unchanged. Jesus told them: Matthew 23:2528, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.” Their hearts were not regenerated and they showed no fruit of conversion. Grace, which is the circumcision of the heart, was never worked in their hearts. They had no compassion and were indifferent to the suffering of others (1 Thes 2:15-16). God puts a new spirit within you and creates a new heart. Philippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” The beatitudes are the steps which lead into the temple. Each

step must rise above the one before it. The body of Christ is the temple. We must understand that we are speaking of the church. The steps that lead into the temple are the steps which lead into the body of Christ. The beatitudes are mysteries which were hidden from the foundations of the world and brought forth the fullness of the gospel.





Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful : for they shall obtain mercy.” Mercy is undeserved love and is one-sided love. God has shown great mercy toward us by extending forgiveness to us for our rebellion and many transgressions. This redemption came at a great price – the death of God’s only son. Titus 3:5, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” We are expected to show mercy toward others. Jesus best explained this mercy in the parable of the king who took account of his servants (Mat 18:23-35). A servant was unexpectedly and totally forgiven of a tremendous debt (after showing remorse). The king had compassion on the servant. This same servant then showed no compassion on a fellow servant who owed a small debt and had him put in jail until the debt could be paid. When the king heard, he asked the servant how he, who had been forgiven of his entire debt, could do such a thing. Why he had no compassion or pity. He was then handed over to the tormentors until he paid all. Jesus then said: Matthew 18:35, “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also

dwelleth the love of God in him?” James 2:15-16, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it Share the gospel with profit?” Romans 11:31, “Even so haveothers these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.” Read Matthew 25:31-46 James 2:13, “For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”





Matthew 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in : for they shall see God.” A wicked heart heart (Jeremiah 17:9-10) is a mind in a state of devotion to self; a pure heart is a mind in a state of devotion to God. Jesus is our example: 1 John 3:3, “And every man that hath this hope in him (Jesus) purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” The purity of Christ will cause us to see our own impurity – that which we have become blind to and comfortable in. When we have a revelation of Christ, when the purity of Christ truly shines into our soul, then we see the impurities of our hearts. All of the impurities found in our heart must be purged out. Revelation 21:27, “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever

17

worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they (the pure) which are written in the Lamb's book of life.” Isaiah 35:8-9, “And an highway shall be there, and a way (narrow path), and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there. These are those who choose to walk in righteousness and who have been redeemed from their sins (Mat 1:21). Isaiah 52:1, “Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.” The circumcised of heart (also see Deut 30:6) are those who gladly hunger and thirst after righteousness, those who understand spiritual poverty, those who have learned to mourn over sin. These are those who yield to God. Those who have been converted no longer walk in the ways of the world. When the emptiness of our heart is filled with the things of this world we don't understand what it means to be purified. The ability to see God is blinded by impurities of the heart. 2 Corinthians 4:4, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The desires and motives of the heart must first become pure. We must correct our attitude – Is it self

18

serving? Pureness must come from a heart of love. We may not stand before God with belligerence, bitterness, false accusations, sharp tongue, and a wrong attitude. The Spirit of the Lord dwells with those of a pure heart (1 Tim 5:22). They are fully conscious of His presence. 1 Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” We cannot be justified in Christ without also being sanctified (set apart - cleanse, purify or make holy). If we continue to follow the things/course of the world, we cannot claim nearness to Christ. We need the washing of the water of the Word (Ps 12:6, 51:7, Pv 30:5-6). We must desire a purging of any impurity of the heart. Note: you can have a righteous exterior but be inwardly wicked. Satan’s strongholds are set-up in the heart. After one’s heart is made pure, you have no need to argue with a man to persuade him to give up worldly entertainments or unrighteousness he takes pleasure in (i.e. television). Before his heart becomes pure, your best arguments avail nothing. He will only think there is no harm in it and seek to justify it. The pure in heart become very guarded as to what they will allow in their hearts and are keenly sensitive against everything impure – for what goes into the heart determines ones nature and also proceedeth out (external actions). We live in a wicked world and must be watchful to the things which defile the mind. Even a trip to the discount store can be a spiritual minefield. Things that most find innocent will grieve the pure in heart. We are admonished to think on pure things

19

(Php 4:8) and keep ourselves pure (1 Tim 5:22). Our very thoughts must be brought into obedience to Christ (2 Cor 10:5). Purifying the heart is a continuous process (1 Thes 4:4). .The Lord is glorified only with righteousness and true holiness, submission, obedience, and reconciliation (1 Pe 1:22-23, 2 Cor 7:1). Christ has opened the gate of heaven far enough that the chiefest of sinners can enter in, but that way is too straight and narrow to allow impurity. 1 Corinthians 6:9, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?…”





Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the : for they shall be called the children of God.” peacemakers In Paradise there was a perfect peace - between man and God and between man and creation. Due to the horrible contention and enmity which sin has brought into the world there was a great loss of peace. James 3:17, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” Purity (as previously discussed) must come before peace. Christ was the greatest peacemaker. Jesus brought peace between God and man: Colossians 1:20, “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” The Lord Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2), and He is the only Peacemaker to whom we can look for salvation. Ephesians 2:14,

20

“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;” The middle wall is the separation between sinners and God, and also between each of us (Gal 3:28). Ephesians 2:13, “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.” Through the blood of the cross and the blessed sacrifice, peace was again restored for anyone who repents and believes. Look how God reaches out to us: Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Jesus stepped into the wrath of the Father to appease His wrath against our sins. Psalm 85:10, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” A just and righteous God can now show mercy to an unworthy sinner through the blood and righteousness of Christ. The work of righteousness shall be Isaiah 32:17

First we must make peace with peace God by laying down all our rebellion and self-centeredness – holding on to nothing. Secondly we must be peacemakers with our fellow man. No person can be a true peacemaker until they have undergone the work of regeneration and conversion - The heart must change to have charity (love) – to think the best of everyone and desire the best for them (within God’s framework). A peacemaker must guard against anger (Eph 4:26), and love their enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them

21

which despitefully use you, and persecute you (Matt 5:44). The heart of a peacemaker is: Luke 6:31, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” When others do not treat us this way, we must not lash out in vengeance, but look to our Lord’s example and take tribulation and persecution patiently: 1 Peter 2:23, “Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:” Judgment is in God’s hands. Evil thoughts and words must be purged from your heart - little sparks ignite such great fires (Jam 3:5). James 1:19-20, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” When someone has been taken in a fault, our heart should go out to restore such a one (Gal 6:1). We must never become self-righteous or look down upon others (Jam 2:24). Peacemakers acknowledge that there can only be one authority (Eph 4:15 & Col 1:18) and constantly encouraging people to walk under the Lordship of Christ (The Word) by living His words (Bible). We desire God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (After all, in this life’s test, if you are not walking in God’s will now, God knows you will have not such interest later). Romans 5:1, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” 2 Corinthians 13:11, “…be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” Say, “Peace, be still” to the

storms

The other side of the beatitudes might be termed the “ME”attitudes. Rather than blessings, these are woes (grief). Luke 6:24, “ Woe unto you that are rich! for you have received your consolation.” To be rich is the opposite of poor in spirit. The rich tend to depend upon themselves (selfsufficiency) for their needs. Their confidence is in their abilities, ingenuity or resources. Whereas the poor in spirit see their wickedness and need for God and are very repentant, the rich are self-righteous. The rich are very proud of their many accomplishments and are confident in their resourcefulness. Recall the Pharisees: outwardly they appeared very righteous; they kept the law; gave to the poor; made impressive public prayers; dressed religious; fasted; and never missed worship ceremonies. Yet we are told our righteousness must exceed theirs (Mat 5:20) or we will not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Until we die to self and see the need for God and yield to His authority we will never have the heart and motivation God desires. The rich have received their comfort; this is as good as it will ever get for them. Luke 18:11-12, “The Pharisee (rich) stood and prayed thus with himself (note: SELF), God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican (sinner). I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.” Notice the dependence upon self and not God. The lord said he was not justified (v. 14).

23

Luke 6:25, “…Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.” To laugh is the opposite of mourning. Those that mourn see the sin and wickedness in their life and it is much grief to them. They constantly seek Jesus – who came to save them from their sins. They realize that only through Christ will victory be achieved. Even very small sins (thoughts, attitudes, actions) will cause distress to those who mourn. Those that laugh are oblivious to such things. (Note: These may be religious people who are active in forms of religious services). Sin is not a serious concern to those who laugh and this will be evidenced through their deeds (fruits). They may take pleasure in unrighteousness through various daily entertainments, thoughts or conversations. They see no contradiction in seeking the things of the world. They had much rather focus on perceived liberties than sacrifices. Self-denial, obedience, forsaking, discernment, and separation are just fanaticism to them. Those that laugh want to die a righteous man’s death but do not want to live a righteous man’s life. Those that laugh are not so much concerned for the sin in their life as they are for the consequences of it (eternal punishment). Those that laugh believe in God, those that mourn follow God. Those that mourn seek God on His terms; those that laugh seek God on their terms (have a form of godliness) although they assume this (blind) is also God’s terms. Those who laugh continue basically unchanged; those who mourn change considerably and continue to. Those who

24

Laugh will eternally mourn and weep. Matthew 25:30, “And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” full! Luke 6:25, “Woe unto you that are for ye shall hunger…” Those that hunger constantly seek to know God and have a vibrant living relationship with Jesus Christ – to be filled with His Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). To truly know Christ, is to follow His example. – Those who follow will humble themselves; be obedient; be meek; will partake of Christ’s sufferings (2 Thes 1:5); and will be peacemakers. In other words, they will die to self and be led of the Spirit in paths of righteousness – making necessary sacrifices along the way. To be full is just the opposite. Many are content to have once made some “belief statement” and are content to sit on a pew in a religious structure while others tell them smooth messages. To be full is to be unconcerned about the daily walk that one must take with cross in hand (Luke 9:23). To be full is to deny the work of sanctification the Lord wishes to do in you. Sanctification - The act of making holy. In an evangelical sense, the act of God's Those that are full will hunger for that relationship with God when they are eternally separated. grace by which the affections of men are purified or alienated from sin and the world, and exalted to a supreme love to God. I go to church! Read the parable of the rich man whose ground brought forth plentifully – Luke 12:16-21.

25

1 Peter 2:21-22, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:” Jesus lived a life devoid of SELF and He perfectly kept the Father’s will. He always reached out in love to others. Let us examine this life that was given for our example. For it is written, Luke 6:40, “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.” John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever Became flesh believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” dwelt among God the Father sent Jesus the Son so that we (man) might have reconciliation to Himself through the Son. Jesus left the glories of heaven to perform the Father’s will. Jesus put His very being aside to fulfill the Father’s plan for mankind. In doing so, Christ knew that He would face persecution, rejection, torture, “penalty of our sin (filth),” and death - but came anyway! John 8:42, “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.” John 16:28, “I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.” Obedience motivated by

love 26

Jesus is God:

John 12:45, “And he that seeth me

John 10:30, “I and my Father are one.” seeth him that sent me.” John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” 1 John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” Jesus is the Word! John 12:44-45, “Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.” Blessed Jesus left His absolute power and authority in heaven and was born as a man. The Father sent Him and He willingly complied. The true significance of this amazing event cannot be totally understood at this time. Jesus put His exalted position aside and became as a servant! Mark 10:45,”For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” 1 Thessalonians 2:12

We are now to put our lives aside (die to SELF) and serve John 12:26,Jesus “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my

of self-sufficiency servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” Emptied and self-confidence Follow - To obey; to observe; to practice; to act in conformity to. It is our duty to follow the commands of Christ. Good servants follow the directions of their master.

27

John 10:27-28, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Jesus defines His sheep as those who he His voice and follow – these He knows! Jesus Was Tempted As We Are: Hebrews 4:15, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Even though Jesus was God, He came to the earth as a man and had no advantage over us. In the Garden of Eden, the first man, Adam, chose his own will over God’s by rejecting God’s knowledge in favor of his own (ate from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil). This resulted in sin and deat . In order for Christ to conquer sin and death and bring reconciliation to the Father, He had to totally reject his own will and absolutely perform the Father’s will. By living in the Father’s will, Jesus fulfilled the law and lived a perfect sinless life thus pleasing the Father. This gave Jesus the victory over Satan (and sin and death) and He could proclaim: Revelation 1:18, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Matthew 4:1-4, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness The to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward Wilderness: an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that

28

these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The devil always tempts at a point of weakness. Jesus must have been very hungry after forty days without food; nevertheless He denied self to perform the will of the Father. Jesus would later state: John 4:34, “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” Satan also questioned Jesus’ divinity thereby tempting Him to prove himself. Jesus appropriately responded with the Word of God (as we are to do) establishing His intention to live totally within the Father’s will. Jesus obeyed the Father’s Matthew 4:6-7, “And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is will! written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Again the devil appealed to any doubt that Jesus might have had as to who He was (and to His pride). Notice that the devil can quote scripture even though he misapplies it. Satan’s workers do the same (2 Corinthians 11:13-15) and we are to beware. Again, Jesus is humble/meek (does not exalt self) and responds with God’s Word. Matthew 4:8-10, “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All

29

these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Lastly, Jesus is tempted with great power, but puts all self interest aside and proclaims that He will serve only the Father – Praise God! Note: temptation itself is not a sin. Incorrectly responding to a temptation produces a sin. For those who seek, God provides a way out. We must die to SELF and live for Christ Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved Jesus Obeyed! me, and gave himself for me.” (Read 2 Timothy 2:11) Jesus Did The Father’s Will: John 8:28-29, “Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” John 5:19-20, “Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.”

30

John 6:38, “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.” John 5:30, “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” Jesus never sought earthly things – no house, lands, career, money, possessions, power, etc. Jesus never instructed His disciples to seek worldly things either – not even to build big church buildings or cathedrals. Jesus didn’t come to establish a physical kingdom but a spiritual one. Luke 17:21, “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” Jesus proclaimed that He did nothing of Himself but only that which the Father desired. This is a life where SELF has been completely put to death. Christ’s delight was found in pleasing the Father by performing the Father’s will. This was so complete that Jesus could make the following statement when facing death (and taking on the sin of the world – separation from the Father): Luke 22:42, “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Jesus never sought His own John 8:54-55, “Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he will. is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and Christ pleased not - Romans 15:3 keep his saying.”

himself

31

We are now to put our lives aside and live for Jesus – His John 14:23, “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and will! my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” John 8:51, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.”

1 Peter 4:2, “That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.” Deny Self – Obey Matthew 12:50, “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my (Christ’s) brother, and sister, and mother.” God! Jesus proclaimed (as a man) that he could do nothing of Himself, likewise neither can we: John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” Jesus Spoke The Father’s Words:John 12:49-50, “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.” John 7:16, “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.”

32

John 14:10-11, “Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.” As a man – Jesus performed the will of John 8:26, “I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak God to the world those things which I have heard of him.” Adam lost, Jesus restored John 8:29, “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” Recall: In Eden, Adam rejected God’s knowledge in favor of gaining his own. Jesus lives within God’s knowledge and rejects His own. Mark 16:15

Preach the We are now to Speak Christ’s gospel Matthew 28:19-20, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Words: Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Mark 13:31, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.” John 15:7, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” He that heareth you, heareth me!Luke 10:16

33

Jesus Did The Father’s Work:

John 5:36, “But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.” John 9:4, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no We must be doing Christ’s man can work.” works! John 5:17, “But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” Even at the age of twelve, Jesus was in the temple about God’s will: Luke 2:49, “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?” Jesus completed all the work the Father gave Him to do: John 17:4-5, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”

We are also to do the Father’s works –

John 15:2, “Every branch inChrist me that beareth not fruit he (the Father) taketh away: and every through branch that beareth fruit, he (the Father) purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” John 15:8, “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my (Christ’s) disciples.” All things must be done voluntarily

34

A kingdom not of this world: Jesus knew the Father’s will was that he would be the sacrifice for the sinfulness of mankind. Even so He was tempted with a worldly kingdom, yet denied himself to perform God’s will: John 6:15, “When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.” Jesus would later proclaim to Pilate: John 18:36, “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.” The Father was Jesus emptied himself of His own will and went about speaking the words of the Father and doing the Father’s works. On two separate occasions the Pleased: Father expressed His pleasure with the Son. Three bear witness At Jesus’ baptism (performed by John the Baptist): Luke 3:22, “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” At the Mount of Transfiguration (prior to Christ’s death): Matthew 17:5, “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”

One day, we want to hear Christ say, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

35

The Ultimate Self Denial:

Romans 5:6-8, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Wow! Would you give your very life for those who hate you and despitefully use you? For those who were just plain undeserving? Christ gave everything He had – His very life for you! Is this not precious to you? His life wasn’t taken – He gave

John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd: it !!! the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” John 10:15, “As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for God humbled Himself – became a the sheep.” John 15:13, “Greater loveservant! hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 10:17-18, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.” Philippians 2:7-8, “But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he Wow! humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

36

What About Us?

1 John 3:16, “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” Revelation 2:10, “…be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” Philippians 3:10, “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”

The way of the cross is death to 1 Peter 4:1-2, “Forasmuch SELF then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves

likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.” Philippians 1:29, “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;” 2 Timothy 3:12, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

The Father will Honour:

Christ’s selfless life (humble/meek/merciful) and yielding to the Father’s will brings about great honour from the Father. John 8:54, “Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:”

37

Philippians 2:9-11, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” John 3:35, “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” Luke 10:22, “All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.” 1 Timothy 6:15-16, “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” Well done, thou good and faithful Potentate - A person who possesses great power or sway; a prince; a sovereign; an emperor, king or monarch. Exalting Jesus above the highest of the celestial hierarchy.

Christ’s Disciples:John 12:26, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”

Let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 38

John 6:32-34, “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.” John 6:35, “And Jesus said unto them, I AM the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall that seek righteousness will never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” Those be filled – God promises! Jesus is to be our very life – that which sustains us! Jesus is what gives life to the world. We must come to Christ to receive this life. I am that bread of life John 6:48 Sustenance - That which supports life; food; victuals; provisions. John 6:51, “I (Jesus) am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the The bread is Christ’s body which was life of the world.” John 6:53, “Then Jesusbroken said unto them, for Verily, you verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” To eat is to live

Jesus’ blood was shed for you!

39

within a strong faith in Christ

John 6:54-56, “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.” Jesus sacrificed himself for the sins of the world; to deliver from sin and self and bring reconciliation to the Father for those who repent and have faith in him. John 6:57-58, “As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.” John 4:32-34, “But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” Just as Jesus died to His will to perform the Father’s will, we must die to our will (self) and perform Jesus’ will – to keep His commandments. There is no life apart from Christ. The broken body and spilt blood of Christ is what justifies us before the Father – We have no righteousness of our own. We must look to Christ for our deliverance from sin and for the ability to walk (live) righteously and holy (sanctification/purification through Him)

40

Jesus told many parables that revealed spiritual truths. Matthew 13:10-14, “And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:” Many are dull of hearing – their hearts are far from God and they are thus blinded and deaf to the things of God. When God becomes the desire of your heart and you totally yield to Him, then your eyes and ears begin to open. Make Jesus your heart’s Matthew 13:15, “For this people's desire! heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” Those that intently seek God will have their eyes opened. God will reveal the mysteries of the gospel. Otherwise: Matthew 7:6, “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.”

41

The Invitation Luke 14:12-14, “Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy (call):

kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.” The meal is a gathering or celebration. The Bible says that it is easy to love a friend, but we are to reach out to those who hate us and mistreat us. Brethren would represent those who already have the gospel. Kinsmen represent those that have no appreciation for what you are saying because you are familiar to them and they do not necessarily respect your spiritual insights (unbelief). Thus: Matthew 13:55-57, “Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.” A second meaning to friends, brethren, and kinsmen would be that we (followers) tend to spend more time in prayer, teaching, encouraging, admonishing and proselytizing those who are close to us (that we love) and thereby neglect our neighbors who may be more needy and receptive concerning what we are saying (but are more unlovely). The rich neighbors are the

42

self-righteous who do not see the need for Jesus in their daily lives. After all, they are a member of a denomination and attend services weekly. They are spiritually self-sufficient. These groups (types) of people could recompense. Followers of Christ are not to obligate, seek reward, selfgratification or honour from others – we do not build idols to ourselves. Jesus said to take the gospel to those who would welcome it. The poor are those who beg (in agony) for spiritual truth– they mourn over their sinful condition. The maimed would be those who have been spiritually hurt – maybe from the self-righteous. The lame would be those who cannot spiritually walk on their own and need help. The blind are those who are deceived (yet not selfrighteous) and will be receptive to doctrinal correction. This group (misfits in the world’s view) have nothing to offer in return, yet God will be pleased to provide payment on their behalf.

Open to All (who will come):Luke 14:16-24, “Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the

43

44

house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.” Those that were bidden were more concerned about temporal possessions, livelihood, and relationships – things of the world, than with what was truly important. The inference is similar to Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. These folks are so busy living for SELF, that they do not see the value/importance/significance of what is truly meaningful. They did not have time (shunned) to please the Lord God and submit to His will. The things they were doing seemed important to them (SELF), and frankly they did not see (blind) why these things would be offensive to God. They assumed they could serve Him in their own way. God then offered the invitation that was meant for them (professed believers) to those who would obey Him (Similar to Saul and David). This group of grateful/receptive people (poor, maimed, halt and blind) has been previously defined. The highways and hedges represents salvation being open to all who will heed (follow) the invitation. Unfortunately those who had been invited became eternally excluded because they did not see how precious the invitation was. Hebrews

Mark 1:10, “And straightway coming up out of the water, He (Jesus) saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:” Luke 4:1, “And Jesus being fullLed of theby Holythe GhostSpirit returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,” Jesus depended upon the Holy Spirit to accomplish His work on earth: Acts 10:38, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Jesus came to the earth as a man. He completely yielded His will to the Father and was led of the Spirit (1 John 5:7) in all things. Jesus proclaimed fulfillment of the prophecy of Esaias by proclaiming : Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” The Spirit was upon Jesus Luke 3:16, “John (the Baptist) answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:” It is important to note that baptism with the 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Holy Ghost is stated as a necessary thing. You Must Have the Spirit: John 3:5, “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” Having the Holy Spirit is essential to enter into the kingdom of God. Why? The most important reason is that Jesus (The Lord of all) said so: John 16:7-8, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” Teaches – guides - prophesizes John 16:13-15, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” Convicts of sin, leads to truth & John 15:26, “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even righteousness the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” John 14:26, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” God is a spirit – must worship in spirit &John 4:24 truth

You Must Be Filled With The Holy Spirit:

It’s not possible to live on earth as we should without being filled with the Holy Ghost. The Bible contains many accounts of those that were filled with the Holy Ghost (including Jesus) – Luke 1:41, 67, 4:1, Acts 2:1, 4, 4:8, 31, 6:3, 5, 7:55, 9:17, 10:44-45, 11:15, 11:24, 13:9, 52, 19:6, and Ephesians 5:18. Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit at the start of His earthly ministry. This was necessary (for Jesus as a man) to complete the Father’s work. Similarly, the twelve Apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost prior to their ministry. Recall that they had fled (Mark 14:50) when Jesus was arrested and were hiding out cowardly in fear of the Jews (John 20:19). When the Holy Ghost was given at Pentecost, these same men were transformed to be bold effective witnesses for Christ. They went forth preaching and facing many persecutions (Jail, beatings, and death). Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17) after his conversion on the road to Damascus and Neither in this world, went on to be a mighty witness to the gentiles.

world to

. The Holy Spirit is never given for selfish reasons (Acts 8:18-23) – always to do the will of God in effectively reaching out to others and accomplishing God’s purposes.

Walk Carefully: The Pharisees accused Christ of having a demon. Jesus replied: Matthew 12:31, “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”

Cry out to God with a pure and sincere heart and ask God for this precious gift.

one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Yield to God and Receive the Holy

Ghost Water baptism and Holy Ghost baptism are identified as two separate events in scripture (Acts 2:2-4, Acts 10:47, Acts 11:15, and Acts 19:2-6). To live a life pleasing to God, we need the Holy Ghost to convict us of our transgressions, lead us into righteousness, give us boldness to speak the gospel and endure tribulation and persecution, power to overcome temptations, wisdom to live daily, to intercede for us in prayer, to point us to Christ, and to teach us God’s Word. We also need the Holy Spirit to manifest love, joy, peace, temperance, goodness, longsuffering, Read: 1 John 3:24 gentleness, meekness and faith in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). We must be led of the Spirit:

Romans 8:13:14, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Led where? In the paths of righteousness to do the will of God.

The Spirit works to change the inward man (heart) and thereby the outward actions change Galatians 5:18, “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.”

Understanding the Things of God: 1 Corinthians 2:10-14, “But God hath

revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” The gospel is still a mystery to many people (have eyes but do not see). Man can be very religious. Creeds, doctrines and traditions have been developed. Huge church buildings have been erected. You can attend religious ceremonies uninterrupted all of your life and still totally miss God – walking in the spirit of the world. God has given His Spirit to those who truly seek Him. The Spirit reveals the deep things of God. The Holy Ghost is teaching, but are we listening? Are we learning? If you are walking in the spirit of the world then the things of the spirit will seem totally foolish to you – you will say: Why should I have to deny myself? Why should I have to put self aside? God would not allow me to go through persecutions and tribulations.

Those that hunger constantly seek to know God and have a vibrant living relationship with Jesus Christ – to be filled with His Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).

51

Examine yourself:We are admonished to examine ourselves: 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” We must be willing to continuously examine ourselves and change the things we find. Even so, we may be self-deceived and must also ask God to search us and reveal things Isaiah 55:8displeasing to Him. 9

Proverbs 21:2, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” Psalms 26:2, “Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.” We must ask the Lord to examine our ways now while there is still time to amend – not later when there will be no more forgiveness. Psalms 33:15, “He fashioneth their hearts alike; considereth all theirme, works.” Psalmshe139:23-24, “Search O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” 1 Corinthians 11:32, “But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.” (also read Proverbs 3:11-12, 15:10).

52

A Contradiction?

53

John 15:1-2, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” Husbandman - A farmer; a cultivator or tiller of the ground. Jesus is the vine. The branches are those who have identified with him and are thus said to be “in him.” Being “in him” is expected to be much more than mere belief or profession with one’s lips. This is a faith accompanied by obedience that produces works (fruit) that are acceptable to God. Those that produce acceptable fruit through the vine are further cultivated(advance the growth of - to refine and improve by correction of faults -labor to make better – to promote an increase) and prune (to cut off superfluous things to make them produce better fruit). Those in Christ (vine) dthat produce nothing acceptable are taken awayby the Father. John 15:3, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” To be clean is to be free from moral impurity – innocent. Whenever Jesus talks about the Word with relation to you, he is talking about being a doer of the word – not a hearer only (read “You Must Live the Word” pages in this pamphlet). You must keep the Word, do it! – Apply it to your life, live it! You are to show your love to him by keeping his commandments.

Ephesians 2:8-10, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Scripture tells us that our best works (deeds) are but filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) before God and could not possibly save us, yet we are also told we are created in Christ unto good works. Works cannot save us yet we cannot be saved without works – what is the answer to this paradox? The key to understanding this is being “created in Christ Jesus.” Recall in the beatitude discussion that when one is poor in spirit, you come to the end of yourself and understand your limitations and inabilities. You realize that your best works are insufficient and far miss the mark. If you could live perfect the rest of your life, you still could not atone for the past. You realize that it is not about “you” but about Christ. Your will and your works do not matter, it’s about His will and the works He desires to produce in you when you die to your will (self) and follow God’s. God creates in you a new heart. The works (fruits) that result are evidences that you no longer live under the old sinful wicked nature, but now have God’s nature. Colossians 1:13, “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:” Following God produces righteousness

2 Timothy 3:17, “That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

54

John 15:4-5, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” Abide – To dwell. To continue with, stand firm – endure. To be firm and immovable, remain. To Rest. Rest from your labors – do

His! Christ provides your very nutrients and water (living) to sustain (support life) you. Apart from Jesus, you cannot produce any acceptable fruit for God. You (the branch) depend on Christ (the vine) for everything. If you die to yourself and your wants and dwell (and continue) with Jesus then you produce much fruit (live His Word – maintain relationship). You rest by dying to your will and absolutely yielding to His. You’re in Him or your not! John 15:6, “If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire , and they are burne.” If you do not abide in Christ you are rejected – eternally separated from God. Being cast into the fire and burned is representative of eternal punishment. To be withered is to die from lack of life sustaining nutrients that can only come through Christ

To enter God’s rest you must cease from your own works (self will)

55

John 12:46, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” We must put aside the sin and come into John 15:7, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Lay the foundation on a rock You are to live Christ’s words; they are to become your life! When you build your life on this firm foundation (Luke 6:47-48) your motives will also become pure. The things you ask will not be selfish requests but those things that further God’s will. John 15:8, “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” Disciple - A follower; an adherent to the doctrine (teachings) of Christ. God is glorified when you produce fruit! His will is then done on earth as it is in heaven. God is not glorified when your will is accomplished – only His. Jesus only performed the will of the Father. When you produce acceptable fruit you are also Christ’s disciples. John 15:9-10, “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. if ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.” Obedience is from the heart out Jesus kept the Father’s commandments, and you are to keep His. In doing so the Father is glorified. Jesus is your example, you are to follow Him – more than just “believe” – follow!

56

Romans 6:22-23, “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Holiness - The state of being holy; purity or integrity of moral character; freedom from sin; sanctity. Without holiness, no man will see Hebrews 12:14 Jesus came to save you from your sins (Matthew 1:21). To be saved from sin is to be saved God from the love of sin.Too love sin is to practice sin – to be comfortable in it. Such a branch will be removed from the vine and be cast into the fire (death – eternal separation and If sin doesn’t grieve you – you’re in suffering). Romans 6:16, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye darkness! are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” Death - Perpetual separation from God with eternal torments; called the second death. Resulting from being under the dominion of sin, and destitute of grace or divine life; called spiritual death. Ephesians 4:24, “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” Will you abide in the will of God (in Jesus) or

will (rebellion – control of your own things, sin)?

57

Mark 3:35,” For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.” Matthew 7:21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:24, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:” Matthew 28:20, “Teaching them to observe (to keep or hold) all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Luke 6:47-48, “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like… like a man…laid the foundation on a rock…” Luke 8:15, “But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.” Luke 8:21, “And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” Luke 11:28, “But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” John 14:23, “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

58

John 8:51, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” John 14:21, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” Revelation 2:26, “And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:” John 15:14, “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Revelation 1:3, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. Obedience must be from the heart! Revelation 22:14, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Our John 9:31, “Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” Christ - Obedient unto death! – Obeying is not just a mental agreementPhilippians (belief) or2:8 identification with the facts of Christ’s life or what He did. Obedience is a key component of faith – to put your actions where your heart is. You obey voluntarily because you love God!

59

This is SELF exerting it’s will above God’s Hebrews 5:9, “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;” Better to obey! Luke 6:46, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” 1 John 2:4, “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the Read 1 Peter truth is not in him.” Matthew 7:21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord,4:17 shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” 2 Thessalonians 1:8, “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:” Enemy of God Matthew 7:26-27, “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” Luke 19:27, “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.”

60

John 14:24, “He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.” Rejection! Luke 12:47, “And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.” 1 Samuel 15:22-23, “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:23, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Read Luke LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” kingdom and dominion, and the Christ Will Be Obeyed: Daniel 7:27, ”And the17:10 greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions (powers) shall serve and obey him.” All will bow & confess Jesus is Daniel 7:14, “And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, Lord nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”

John 12:26, “If any man serve me, let him follow me… if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”

61

Concerning Obedience: We must be careful to obey Christ in the Spirit (led) as revealed (affirmed) by the Word (2 Tim 3:15-16). Jesus came to lessen our burden and we must be careful not to increase it on ourselves or upon others. When asked what the greatest commandment was: Mark 12:29-31, “And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” Jesus had taken the original Ten Commandments and reduced them down to two. These two commandments of love revealed God’s desire for us. The religious system (of the time) through the Jewish Scribes had taken the original Ten Commandments and through their interpretations had increased them to 613 new major commandments. They called these traditions and actually held them in higher regard than scripture. These were contained in a collection known as the Mishna. Jesus said: Mark 7:7-9, “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep

62

63

your own tradition.” Jesus said: Matthew 11:30, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” When we put our will (burden) aside and live simply depending upon God, we truly find peace and joy. Deny self and shun worldliness! Example:This society puts great emphasis on being wealthy, famous and powerful. Consider the great burdens these things bring. The wealthy must always be concerned about keeping their money – they worry and toil constantly. They have big houses and many possessions to maintain and these are a continuous source of aggravation. They have many who depend upon them and must constantly provide. Their responsibilities and burdens leave them little time to enjoy their privileges and material excesses. The famous must always be concerned with their physical appearance and how others perceive them. They are driven to continually perform to stay in the limelight. They are in a state of continual competition with others. The powerful are driven and must constantly ensure there is no diminishing of their influence or control. Others are always seeking to de-throne them. These things consume people and become tremendous worries and burdens. What seems so desirable actually enslaves and brings great bondage. Those that trust in God need not be concerned with always having to make things happen or worry over losing everything. Staying close to God and being led of His Spirit lessens burdens. God is not looking for forced servitude. All things are to be done in love – voluntarily. You serve through correct motivation. Remember this promise: Matthew 6:8, “Be not ye

therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” The problem is that we think we know better the things we need and wish to exert our control and will above God’s. Many of the things we think we need bring bondage and God does not want us to be in bondage. Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” If we seek God and live within His righteousness He will provide the rest. Jesus said: Matthew 6:25-31, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” Do we really believe this or are we so busy trying to make things happen that we have no time to consider it? In the garden of Eden, God provided

64

everything. God wants us to put aside our will and control so that He can bring us back to His provision. Remember, God created the earth and the fullness thereof. He owns everything!

John 18:38, “Pilate saith unto him (Jesus), What is truth?” Jesus had provided the answer earlier in His ministry: John 14:5-6, “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Recall that God referred to Himself as “I AM” to Moses at Mt. Horeb. The questions are: what is “the truth” in your life? What is “the way” in which you are heading? Just what is the meaning of your “life?” What is truth – Jesus is the truth and He is Aliv: Revelation 1:18, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen….” The Lord desires relationship with eword (John 1:1): John 1:14, “14, “And the you (John 14:23) right now. Jesus is also the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Besides a real personal relationship with Christ, we also have His written Word. Psalms 119:160, “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” John 17:17, “Sanctify (set apart) them through thy truth, thy word is truth.” Jesus said: John 8:31, “…If ye continue in my word, then

65

are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Do you know the truth? Many apply things they have heard in religious services and parts of the Bible and sort of form their own truth – Something they are comfortable with and willing to sort of live in. Many say they believe every word of the Bible – yet have not read every word of the Bible. Follow His truth – build your life within it! Which “way” are you heading? God has given us the Holy Spirit and His Word to lead and guide us. Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Jesus said: John 8:51, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man ke my saying, he shall never see death.” Most people live their lives chasing after worldly things that are eternally worthless. Occasionally a tragedy or circumstance will occur in our ep lives that shakes their will and control of things to the foundation. Then they have some honest moments when they question what is really important. We must put aside our truths and our ways and follow Christ. We must see that the things we desire so much such as money, careers, and possessions, have no eternal value and will soon pass away. We must realize that many of the things that entertain or inform us are vile and wicked and contrary to God’s truth (Word). We must not take pleasure in unrighteousness and then tell God that we struggle with sin in our lives. We must s justifying evil. We must put our self aside and live by God’s Word. The way of Jesus (narrow) is one of obedience, self-denial, forsaking the world, and commitment – but there is much love.

Losing your life for Jesus: 2 Timothy 2:11

Matthew 10:39, “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” Matthew 16:25, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” Live for self and die! Mark 8:35, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.” Luke 9:24, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” Die to self and live! Luke 17:33, “Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.” John 12:25, “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.” Your will or His will

A point is being made here! We are to put aside our desires, ambitions, and control of things, and yield totally to God – lose our life. In doing so we will find it and secure it eternally! Jesus gives life more John 10:10

Denying and Forsaking: Jesus often said: Come, Follow

Me! Matthew 16:24, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Repetitive verses – Mark 8:34, “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” We are talking about sacrifice here! Luke 9:23, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” crucify the flesh (self-will) with its passions and desires

Luke 14:27, “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” Overcoming sin (& Satan)

Nothing candaily take priority over God:

Commitment !

Luke 14:26, “If a man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” Stop seeking rights, privileges, reputation, ambitions, interests, and your own way

See Matthew 10:37

Mark 10:17-23, “And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for followHow he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto hisSheep disciples, Goats are driven hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!” Forsaking the things of the world and self-denial are so hard for the flesh. This man observed all the law, but still missed God. He relied on self (money) rather than God. This had become an idol in his life as evidenced by his unwillingness to let go of it. Perhaps he went back to the safety of his synagogue. Jesus acknowledged his claim (seeing his heart), but the man still held control of areas of his life. Jesus asked him to release all his life to God and FOLLOW. Many are willing to have a form of godliness, but when push comes to shove, it is on their own terms.

I once had a dream in which I had possession of some animal horns – the type that a hunter would desire. I said to myself, “I will display these horns for all to see.” Then I immediately heard the voice of the Lord say, “Will you make an altar to SELF.” It then suddenly occurred to me that all the trophies, certificates, diplomas, achievements, and awards that we so proudly display are no more than idols to ourselves. This is not the humble attitude one should have who truly relies on the Lord for everything. We must seek to find our importance and acceptance in God. Mark 10:28-30, “Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” Does the Lord not say: Matthew 6:8, “…for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” AND Matthew 10:30, “But the very hairs of your head are all Jesus through His life, set the example to numbered.” Jesus says: “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19, 8:22, 9:9, 16:24, 19:21; Mark 2:14, 8:34, 10:21, Luke 5:27, 9:23, 9:59, 9:61, 18:22, John 1:43, 10:27, 12:26, 13:36, 21:19, 21:22, )

Matthew 13:44, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.” The kingdom of heaven is equated with hidden treasure. When a man finds this treasure and realizes its worth, he is willing to part with everything he has to obtain it. In other words everything of value in his life becomes meaningless in comparison with what he seeks to gain. This man is willing to part with everything (his old way of life) and makes all necessary changes to obtain this treasure. Many come professing Christ but never really see the value of denying themselves, taking up the cross and following Him. Hence they simply add one more interest (being a Christian) to their already established lifestyle. God may never take priority in their lives and thus compete with other interests. Once in an eternity Matthew 13:45-46, “Again, the kingdom of opportunity! heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” Those that truly recognize the value of the kingdom of heaven will do anything to obtain it. This usually results in significant changes in one’s life to conform to God’s will – totally abandoning sinful lifestyles and forsaking much of what the world thinks important. Don’t understand? Then you haven’t recognized

Jesus said: John 12:25-26, “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” So profound! This is clearly a teaching of abandoning our will and obeying God’s (through Jesus Christ) – It’s really not that complicated. Jesus made many uncomplimentary comments about the religious folks at the time: Mark 7:6, “He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” The word “vain” is mat’-ane in Greek and means to manipulate (and also “to no purpose”). These men tried to manipulate God for their own purposes. This is clearly man trying to exert his will above God’s. This has always been the issue. Throughout the Bible, over and over, God has told man to put his will aside and submit to Him. God has not conceded to man and never will. God has said that there will come a day when He will separate everything that offends (Matthew 13:41).

Stop Trying to Rely on Self: God has a plan for everyone who seeks Him.

God’s requirement is that you trust in Him – He is able to provide – God is “I AM .” Consider this: Peter was an Apostle to the Jews and Paul was an Apostle to the Gentiles. What’s the issue you might ask? Paul was much better suited (from a worldly perspective) to be the Apostle to the Jews. Paul was brought up in Jerusalem at the feet of Gamaliel (Doctor of the Law), and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers (Acts 22:3). He was above many of his equals in his own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of the fathers (Galatians 1:14). Paul was circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless (Philippians 3:5-6). Paul could have put forth convincing arguments from the scriptures. Peter was a fisherman who was considered unlearned and ignorant by the Jewish leaders (Acts 4:13). Peter was a working man who could relate to the common people and could explain Christ’s gospel in simple terms. So, why were each of them put into an environment that intimidated them and did not best utilize their talents? BecauseGod did not want them to rely on their own abilities. God wanted them to depend upon Him! Their comfort zones were challenged and they had to turn to God for all things. God doesn’t need you, you need Him!
