2009 District of Columbia Family Education Expo Education Excellence: All Students. All Parents. All Families. Call for Presenters Overview The DC Family Education Partnership, a collaborative of local and state education agencies, will host the 2009 DC Family Education Expo for families and caregivers in the District of Columbia. The Expo is a community event, where families will gain valuable information about education and educational programs for students of all ages. Invitation We invite presenters to submit a proposal to present a workshop or discussion at the Expo to be held on September 12, 2009, at Bell Multicultural High School. The theme for the Family Education Expo is “Education Excellence: All Students. All Parents. All Families.” We are searching for education and community based presenters who represent diverse backgrounds, roles, responsibilities, and experiences in serving children, adults and families. All presentations will be 60 minutes. Submission of a proposal is not a guarantee or acceptance that your presentation will be included in the final Expo program. A review committee comprised of community stakeholders including program staff and community members will assess each proposal. Consideration will be given to such factors as program balance and space availability. We encourage presenters to use technology to engage participants. Audience We anticipate over 750 attendees from across the city. Parents, students, educators, early childhood specialists, universities, health care practitioners, advocates, and others will gather at this conference to learn and share information about how their work and effort has impacted and continues to influence education in the District of Columbia. Presenter Benefits Each presenter will receive a table in the exhibition hall for their organization and recognition in the program book. We encourage presenters to waive their fees as an in-kind donation.

Presentation Content Areas Please consider the following criteria when developing your proposal: All presentations will respond to best practices, effective strategies, successful program models, or research in the following content areas: 1. College & Workforce Readiness The College & Workforce Readiness content area will give parents and caregivers useful information, tools and resources to support postsecondary education for their children and themselves. Learn about college selection, college prep and financial aid to pay for college and training after the high school age. 2. Education & Youth: Taking Charge in the Hall, Classroom and Dorm This youth-specific strand will focus on the attitudes, strategies and behaviors youth need to take charge of their education, college success and life goals. Students will get advice from peers who have met challenges and who are pushing themselves to get the best education they (and you!) deserve. 3. Special Populations The special populations strand will address the issues that impact the education of students with unique challenges, i.e. students with exceptionalities (both academically gifted and those with disabilities), transient domiciles (“homeless”), returning from foster care and those reentering the community from juvenile justice system. 4. Parent and Child Together The Parent and Child Together content area will provide an opportunity with parents whose children are too young or who prefer not to stay in the Children’s Pavilion sessions they can attend together. Sessions will model working with your child and teaching in fun ways everyday. Concurrent Sessions Each concurrent session will last for one hour (60 minutes) in length and will accommodate 25-30 individuals. Each content area will have at least one session with an advocacy component and a technology component. All presenters will be responsible for the duplication of the session’s handouts and materials. Information about estimated attendance will be provided to the presenters closer to the date of the expo.

Presentation Formats: (1) Q and A Discussion: A discussion-based session could be used by presenters with a strong background on the topic and knowledge of adult learning principles. Presenters are expected to involve participants throughout the discussion. Topics that have no easy answers or challenge us to think outside the box are excellent for this type of session. (2) Educational Presentation: Presenters share lessons learned from best practices, innovative activities, research studies, or personal experience. Presentations should focus on practical, useful information or perspectives, which the participants can apply to their respective situations. (3) Panel Discussion: This is a discussion by experts with different experiences on a related topic. This format will be determined by the Expo program committee. You will be notified in advance of the decision. (4) Workshop: This session is well suited to the presentation of training materials. The workshop format will involve participants in group work, hands-on technology and other engaging activities. This is not a “sit and get” session. Please keep in mind: 1. The presentation, discussion or workshop should appeal to a diverse audience, including, but not limited to: age, profession, educational attainment, experience, and knowledge of the subject. 2. The presentation, discussion or workshop should be no more than 1 hour in length. 3. The presentation, discussion or workshop should be limited to a maximum of 3 presenters. 4. The presentation or workshop should be innovative, interactive, and engaging. 5. The presentation, discussion or workshop should not be used to advance a particular program or product. 6. The presenter(s) should provide resources such as bibliographies, articles, and other handouts aside from presentation notes.
