Albert Student Davis TEAM20 10/22/17 Why We Should Not Celebrate Zheng He’s Voyages Why should we celebrate an explorer who did not find any new land, did not make his country any money, and the people who took over after his death got rid of his records? The explorer I am referring to is Zheng He, He was a Chinese explorer in the 1400s. The voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated because he discovered nothing new, he didn’t accomplish much, and he wasted China’s money. One reason the voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated because he discovered nothing new. Document A lists all the places that he went to, and it shows the repetitiveness of his travels. He did not risk anything, but stuck to what he knew. He went to India three times. These were already established ports, so he knew what he was getting into when he showed up. People have already gone there before, and there was already a trading route set up. He was not adventurous. Another reason the voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated is because he didn’t accomplish anything. China burned away all of his documents and forgot about him for 500 years. They banned exploration from China after his death. If they thought he did something, they wouldn’t have stopped trading with other people. They did not follow in his footsteps. His voyages were useless, so China stopped voyaging all together. One argument that people use to say we should celebrate Zheng He is that he had large ships and went on more voyages. Document B shows that he asked for 255 ships to travel to India, and he had a crew of 27,500 on his seven voyages. On a small trip to India, why would he waste thousands of dollars on such a large crew? Even though he brought back items to China, it wasn’t enough to bring back the lost money they put into it. There are reasons to celebrate the voyages of Zheng He. For example, he went on seven voyages and commanded a large crew. However, it did not benefit him or his country. He could not make back the money they spent on him. They did not discover any new land for them to claim. They did not care about him, so they forgot about him for 500 years. We should not celebrate Zheng He because his own country did not care about him. Why should anyone else?

Davis TEAM 20 10/22/17 The Zheng He Voyages Would you want to go on a voyage just to waste money? Zheng He was born in 1371. As a kid he was kidnapped by government officials and went on 7 voyages to explore new lands. The voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated because he didn’t discover any new lands, he wasted a lot of money, and his missions were not always peaceful. One reason the voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated is because he didn’t explore any new lands. In document A is states that he explored Calicut, Hormuz, Malindi, Mogadishu, and Mombasa, but all of them were already explored. So he wasted all of that time not discovering any new lands. Another reason the voyages of Zheng He should not be celebrated is because he wasted a lot of money. In document D he didn’t get money back from what it costed to travel. He wanted to get more than he spent, but he didn’t even get back what he spent, and he just lost money. Wasting money does not help countries excel, so his voyages didn’t do much for his country. One argument that Zheng He should be celebrated is because he intended to make friendships with different countries. However, his voyages were not always peaceful. In document C it states that he brought lots of soldiers and military officers. Since he traveled with a lot of soldiers and military officers, it indicates that it was not peaceful because he needed a lot of soldiers and military officers. There are reasons to support celebrating the voyages of Zheng He. For example, he intended to make friendships with different countries and he explored more area. However, his missions were not very peaceful, he didn’t discover any new lands, and he wasted a lot of money. We should not celebrate the voyages of Zheng He because it is not a good thing to celebrate someone that wastes money and waste time by going on voyages to explore the places that have already been discovered.

TEAM 20 10/22/18 Essay Do you think we should celebrate the Voyages Of Zheng He? Zheng He is from Yunnan. At 10 his father was killed by Ming’s Dynasty and he was captured. I think we should celebrate him because he explored way more than columbus, He tried to make friendships to all the places he explored and he made oceanic trade possible. One reason the voyages of Zheng He should be celebrated is he tried to make friendships where he explored. The several voyages he went on he had intentions to make friendships with others. Another reason the voyages of Zheng He should be celebrated is that he explored way more than Columbus. He went on seven voyages according to Document B. He explore more than columbus did and with better intentions. One argument that Zheng He should be celebrated is because Him and his crew captured barbarians to make oceanic trade possible. If he didn’t do that back then oceanic trade would not be possible and history classes would have been taught differently. There are reasons to not support celebrating the voyages of Zheng He. For example, He made China blow threw all of its money and he slaughter many barbarians and people. He didn’t blow through China’s money, they gave him the money and asked him to go on the voyages. He also didn't slaughter the barbarians, he captured them alive to make oceanic trade possible.
