At the end of the lesson the pupils are expected to: explain plant needs in order to grow and live. define photosynthesis

Plants are alive, just like people and animals. How do we know this? Living things all do certain things: They grow and die. They need energy, nutrients, air, and water. They produce young. They are made up of cells. They react to what's around them.

Plants are organisms that grow and reproduce their own kind. They need for, carbon dioxide, soil, water, light, and space to grow.

Water and minerals are taken from the soil through roots. Provides support for the plant and anchor for the roots to grow in.

If you said that plants get their nutrients and water from the soil, you are right! Although all green plants make their food by photosynthesis, they also need to get nutrients from the soil. These dissolve in water and are taken up by the roots of the plant.

The most important plant nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K). Nitrogen helps above-ground leafy growth and gives dark green color to leaves.

Phosphorous helps plant cell division. Without phosphorous, flowers and seeds could not form. Phosphorous also helps root growth and protects the plant from disease.

Like phosphorous, potassium increases the plant's resistance to disease and helps root growth. Potassium is needed for the making of chlorophyll.

Water is essential to all life on earth. No known organism can exist without water. Plants use water to carry moisture and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and food from the leaves back down to the roots.

Green plants take in carbon dioxide from air and use it during photosynthesis to make food. Smoke, gases, and other air pollutants can damage plants.

Plants need sunlight in order to grow properly. They use light energy to change the materials - carbon dioxide and water into food substances.

Plants make food in their leaves. The leaves contain a pigment called chlorophyll, which colors the leaves green.
