David John Matthews Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dave Matthews moved from New York to Cambridge, England with his Mother, Father and five brothers and sisters. At the age of ten his father passed away due to lung cancer. A year later his Mother moved the family back to their original home in Africa. Dave attended school here until his graduation of high school. He then moved back to the United States to avoid being drafted into the South African Military. After first living in New York he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1986. Here he David J. Matthews worked as a popular bartender at a restaurant called Miller’s where he met Tim Reynolds. Reynolds was an aspiring musician himself and had Dave join him on stage one night and his talent began to flourish. After only a few years Dave Matthews hatched the idea to start his own band.
