The Emerald Project, Dublin IRL (2003-2007) Social & Affordable Housing (37 units) €7.5 million ($12 million) value Flagship environmental housing scheme for the largest urban regeneration & renewal scheme in Europe. Tallest timber housing scheme in Ireland (4 stories). Transfers innovations from BedZED housing scheme in London. ESD innovations: Wood Pellet CHP, Living Machine, prefabricated timber construction, solar thermal & integrated PV, green roofs, Sustainable Urban Drainage System. Integrated design methodology: early input from QS, Structural and M&E. Project Architect from schematic design to contract stage. Design team liaison concerning solar, thermal, wastewater and fire safety aspects of the scheme.(2003- 6) Best specification for a building - Sustainable Energy Ireland Awards (2005) €700,000 grant from Sustainable Energy Ireland (Irish Government Agency) The Hearth, Camphill Community Ballytobin, Co.Kilkenny, IRL (2003-2007) Rural Community Building Mixed –use farm building – bakery, dairy & volunteer accommodation €500,000 ($800,000) value Simple construction, designed for self-build, with reference to traditional Irish farmhouses. Focus on semi-public spaces to create new routes through the farm, places to sit & enjoy the fruits of labour. ESD innovations: Biogas fired oven, vertical reed bed water treatment, terracotta block & timber construction. Overseen project from schematic design to detail design stage. (2003-7)

House reduction, Dublin, IRL (2006-2007) Alts & Adds Additions & Subtractions to an Edwardian Family House for my parents. €150,000 ($240,000) value Minimum intervention, maximum effect. Brief was reduced to 15sq.m new construction by emphasising the connections between inside and outside rather than the enclosure of additional space. This allowed for higher quality finishes and additional focus on landscaping. The building follows the typology of the Edwardian bay window to create a new garden room oriented SW. ESD: Solar thermal heating, retention of existing fabric, salvaged flooring & kitchen. Water harvesting. Briefing & schematic design (2006-7)

Spiritual Care Centre, Dzogchen Beara Co.Cork, IRL (2005-2007) Hospice, Religious building Centre for medical & spiritual care for terminally ill guests of the Tibetan Buddhist community €1.9 million ($3 million) value Steep cliff-top setting with views over the Atlantic Ocean. Focus on design for well-being –Variety of thermal environments, non-institutional detailing Environmental considerations: Passive solar design, daylight admitted deep into the plan, low-embodied energy materials, super insulation, Solar thermal & wood pellet CHP. Project Architect from detail design to contract stages. In charge of design team liaison for solar, thermal, structural and fire safety aspects of the scheme. (2005- 7) MARIO CUCINELLA ARCHITECTS Bologna, IT (2000) Mario Cucinella Architects is an Italian design studio specialising in bioclimatic architecture. They continue in the tradition of Piano & deCarlo & are one of the offices defining the next generation of Italian architecture.

Project for the Bay of Genoa

Ponte Parodi International Design Competition Genoa, IT (2000) (MCA in association with Short Ford Associates) Mixed-use commercial building & waterfront urban design This two-stage international competition sought the creation of a signature building in the historic port of Genoa. The design created two new urban squares, one beside the sea and another elevated on the roof, offering a panorama of the city and Mediterranean sea. The roof acted also as a shading device and energy producer. The whole building was to be naturally ventilated also
