Every process generates some undesirable by-product with products. India is the largest milk producer of the world. About 2-3 lit of water is utilized per lit of milk processed, which finally result in effluent of biodegradable nature with high value of BOD. The global concern for environmental protection has triggered the world- wide awakening on the importance of environment protection and industrial waste disposal standards are becoming more stringent. Hence effective waste management is necessary from legislation and costing point of view. By presenting the fundamentals of proven management techniques for recognizing and controlling water and wastes such as monitoring, employee training, management action programs and data interpretation provides means to minimize the waste generation and treatment cost without any additional cost. Initial survey and monitoring provides sources and achievable goals which can be met by detail plant survey and in plant control. This indicates that huge waste can be eliminated at the point of generation just by good housekeeping and technological improvement. Reduction of waste as well as its recycling and utilization in profitable way is also equally important. The treatment of waste before disposal is utmost important to meet the regulation but management should act so as to minimum waste is generated and required to treat. References 1.
