G. PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS: •
Disorders of Sleep and Breathing/Sleep Apnea •
•
Dr. Morgan prioritizes the development of respiratory and sleep laboratories and sleep medicine in countries outside of the United States. Oftentimes, other countries want the newest in Western technology and medicine, but it is not in their best interests due problems in voltage, climate, and other demographic factors.
International Medicine/Travel Medicine/Wilderness Medicine •
Although Dr. Morgan is a trained pulmonary specialist and internist, his major thrust now is international and wilderness medicine. He has prioritized traveling in numerous parts of the world from South America to Eastern Europe, although he primarily travels in Southeast Asia. Wilderness medicine is primarily geared towards backpackers and back country explorers but lends itself nicely to medicine in developing countries, as in developing countries one needs to make due with what is available.
G. PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS (continued): 10/2007
•
Chronic Lung Disease and Pulmonary Rehabilitation •
Chronic lung diseases are one of the greatest problems outside of the United States. Statistically, the same is true in the United States, but third party health insurance carriers have failed to address this issue adequately. Addressing this issue can be as simple as starting a pulmonary rehabilitation program which can be nothing more than a piece of paper with “pulmonary rehabilitation” written on it. Some developing countries in the South Pacific do not even have inhaled medications. Dr. Morgan prioritizes the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lung diseases in developing countries.
•
Noninvasive Ventilation in Respiratory Failure
•
Traditional Health Care in Pulmonary Medicine
•
Occupational Lung Disease For many years Dr. Morgan has prioritized the use of high technology Western medicine in countries outside of the United States. He has participated in high technology transfer of medical information over the Internet in terms of sleep disordered breathing and is quite familiar with and interested in telemedicine. Although Dr. Morgan travels many times only for pleasure, medicine is very closely linked in terms of medical availability and practice. For example, Dr. Morgan was recently in Patagonia, South America hiking and trekking and saw first hand how a dislocated shoulder is handled medically in the wilderness. He has similar experiences in Eastern Europe (Uzbekistan, Bulgaria, Romania), South America, and most countries in Southeast Asia. He now travels approximately four months or more out of the year in China. He is quite familiar with health care problems in China from iodine deficiency to chronic lung disease.
