CSE FELLOWS: APPLICATION ESSAY

Before describe CSE to a prospective MBA, I would explain to her/him that a Sustainable Enterprise is one that addresses the triple bottom line: is financially profitable, minimize the impact in the environment, and is socially responsible. Then that CSE is an academic and research center within KFBS that provide students, executives, and organizations with education, knowledge and practice tools to become leaders and drive innovation in sustainable enterprise. Finally that this year Kenan-Flagler celebrates 10 years of leadership in sustainability; it was one of the very first schools to offer such a program; and is ranked one of the top business schools in the world for education in this arena, and #2 for course content, according to The Aspen Institute’s survey. One way to take advantage of Center resources is to attend the numerous extracurricular activities they organized; such as speakers, lectures, company presentations, panel debates, informational sessions, and the Sustainable Business Career Fair. Another way is to solicit a CSE career coach; participate in the activities of Net Impact club, which are supported by CSE; take elective classes in Sustainability and earn a Sustainable Enterprise Concentration; apply for one of the five summer internships in sustainable consulting that CSE offers; and signed up in the emailing list to receive job opportunities and news in the sustainable space. Finally, apply to CSE Fellow to learn fist hands what the CSE does and expand your network in the field. My initial interest would be to help expand CSE’s Knowledge base, providing compelling and concrete evidence of how the human activity is impacting the planet and the society. My recommendation would be to collect, interpret and summarize the latest conclusions of the scientific community, the business world and other entities, and to present them in a way that is easy to understand and to retain. The students are bombed by informational emails and the vast majority doesn’t read SE articles. My recommendation is to create the “DID YOU KNOW?” concept, which would consist to send an email to the KFBS community twice a week, with “did you know?” as the subject, with a one line statistic related with a sustainable issue. The purpose would be to inform and create awareness in a fun and didactic way. Additionally, put the statistic of the month in a public key-board on-campus, and ones a year publish the “CSE, did you know? Handbook” with all the phrases of the year
