Crocheted Tess D’Urbervilles Sontag/Shawl Finished Size: Back neck to front sides 29”(each side), neck to back point 21”. This size will fit a small petite woman, add 6 more rows to make next size up. Note: This shawl can be made in any weight of yarn. You must work a multiple of 6+3 rows or the Edging Rnd multiple will not work out. Materials Finger or sock weight wool yarn (see Note above), approximately 685 yards Crochet hook, size G or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 16 dc and 10 rows = 4” Note: Shawl is worked from the back of neck to the back point. BODY Chain 4, dc in 4th ch from hook (mark dc just worked). Row 1 (Right side): Ch 6 (counts as first tr and ch 2, now and throughout), turn; working over post of marked dc and into space between the very first ch 4 and marked dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in space, ch 2, tr in same ch as marked dc: 4 dc and 2 tr. Note: Mark Row 1 as right side. Row 2: Ch 6, turn; 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, dc in each dc across to center ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center ch-2 sp, dc in each dc across to last ch-2 sp, 3 dc in last ch 2 sp, ch 2, tr in last tr: 14 dc and 2 tr. Repeat Row 2, 31 times more for a total of 33 rows: 324 dc and 2 tr. Next Row: Turn; slip st in first ch-2 sp, (ch 4, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc) across to center ch-2 sp, ch 4, (sc, ch 4) twice in center ch-2 sp, sc in next dc, (ch 4, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc) across to last 2 dc, skip last 2 dc, ch 1, dc in last ch-2 sp to form last ch-4 sp. Note: There must be an odd number of ch-4 sp along the outer edge of the shawl for the Edging Rnd to work. The Edging Rnd will be worked across the outer edges of the shawl and then into the spaces created along the inside edges of the beginning and end of each row. Edging Rnd: Ch 1, turn; sc in same sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-4 sp, sc in next ch-4 sp; repeat from * around entire shawl; join with slip st to beginning sc, finish off.
