Design Cycle

Create Process Journal

13th March Today we were introduced to the project and we chose our groups which we worked in. We got a pretty good idea of what the project was about and we started to investigate on Web 2.0 a bit by going to the links provided on the task sheet. We have a vague idea of what Web 2.0 is now, but its limited to just knowing that it’s an enhancement of the existing internet. We also started the Blog that we are going to submit our Design Cycle through, but we decided to keep everything off the blog until the end, when we would upload it. The process journal is meant to be kept on the blog (I presume) yet we will keep it on a word document as we did with other projects.

18th March We started the Investigate section of the Design Cycle today and we wrote the challenge, the essential questions, and we started answering the first guiding question, what is web 2.0? What we accomplished today is seen here:

19th March We decided to divide up the work that we were going to do in the way that the guiding questions are divided up amongst up and so forth. Hence we would do a roughly equal amount of work. So we each will do 3 guiding questions for this lesson and the next, and then write how the essential question relates to the AOIs and the design brief & spec together.

20th March Today both of us finished the answers to the guiding questions, and hence after reading each other’s work begun to work on the question ‘how does the essential question link to the AOIs’. This we’re around half way done, so during the next class we should be able to start the Design section. So far we feel we’ve been on task more or less and what we’ve accomplished is a testament to this although the first lesson we felt we didn’t really do much in.

25 March th

We finished the Investigate quite late in the lesson today we felt (in relation to the work we had to accomplish), and we didn’t get much of a start in the design phase hence. We just decided to have 3 designs – a Brochure, a PowerPoint presentation and a Movie. This we could divide up so that one of us does 2 designs and the other one does 1 design and critically analyses the one we pick, hence equalizing the work load.

26th March Today again we felt we didn’t do much work as we didn’t finish the design section (which we expected we could do as it is not much for 2 people). We however do have some time left – a month and a bit so our procrastinating shouldn’t be a problem. During next lesson we should aim to finish the Design so as to get to the Create ASAP.

27th March As expected, we finished the Design today and we started the Plan section. We decided to use the same plan format as I used in my last Design Cycle (a vertical chevron list), because it worked relatively well for me. We haven’t yet finished the plan, so we think that in the next lesson we should finish the plan so as to start the Create for the following lesson.

2nd April We did finish the plan as expected today, so we can start the Create in tomorrow’s lesson. We spent the whole lesson on the plan however as we remembered to insert a Gantt chart so as to keep track of time better during the whole design cycle. According to the plan for the Create section, we should finish the product by the 27th of April, leaving us 2 lessons and 1 day to finish the evaluates (test the product) and to upload everything to our blog, which I realize is cutting it a bit close.

3rd April We started the Create today and as planned spent a whole lesson picking the format and making the cover page to use for the brochure. This may seem like a waste, but we feel like this ‘makes’ the brochure as presentation matter a lot. Right now we’re pleased with how it looks as we found a cartoon city picture which had web 2.0 applications everywhere on billboards and so forth. We used this as the cover page and back page backgrounds, and we think it brings colour into the brochure.

8th April We decided to alter the two of the headings slightly from ‘pros and cons of Web 2.0 cont’ to ‘how could web 2.0 be used in OSC’ and ‘how can and do we use web 2.0’ to characteristics of web 2.0’. These we thought were more suited for the challenge. We made concise and inserted around two thirds of the information today into the brochure. Overall I thought today’s progress was okay and we seem to be on plan more or less as in the plan we felt that we could have just summarized info today to insert it tomorrow, whereas we really summarised and inserted information today.

20th April We finished putting in all the information today and we also started inserting some pictures into the brochure (just the logos). Today’s progress is on track of the plan, but there is still some work to be done in terms of design as right now we just have the information on a white brochure with a title page and cover page.

21st April We found a picture with the globe and cut out paper people holding hands around it, which we thought symbolized Web 2.0 in the way of interconnectivity. Hence we used this picture as the background of the inside of the brochure, and it looks quite good now, but it does lack a few pictures. We are a little behind our plan however as we haven’t inserted pictures and diagrams into the product which we said we’d do.

27th April We added a few finishing touches today (a few more pictures) and printed out the brochure. This took the whole lesson however as printing turned out to be quite inaccurate – the sizes were wrong ect., but we fixed it in the end and have now finished our product, on par with our plan. We’re pleased with the final product, even though our design cycle may be a bit brief.

28th April Today’s the last day we get to work on this, so we gathered as much feedback from our classmates as possible and then started to write our separate evaluations. Neither of us finished our Evaluates however and we will save them tomorrow on the public domain (and we sent the blog to Ichiro as expected). We also made the brochure into two I-papers and embedded them on the blog, so you can access the brochure online too.
