6th Grade Course 2 Syllabus Mrs. Kirstin Morrison 2008 - 2009 Students and Families, Welcome to 6th Grade Course 2 at Woods! In addition to strengthening your mathematics skills, our course will require you to apply knowledge from your past mathematics courses. Timely completion of the daily homework assignments is crucial to your mastery of the material and success in this course. This course will prepare you for the 6th grade EOG exam as well as mathematics applications in your future. If you feel lost or confused in any way, do not hesitate to ask for assistance right away. I will do everything that I can to help every student succeed in learning. I will be available for extra help after school from 3:15PM – 4:15 PM on Wednesdays, but you may also feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone at any time. Sincerely, Kirstin Morrison 919-960-8353 x 218 [email protected] SUPPLY LIST Students will bring in during first week of school and leave in classroom: • Mead composition book or spiral notebook for “math journal” Students will need to bring every day: • Textbook (Glencoe Mathematics Applications and Concepts Course 2) • 3-Ring Binder with loose-leaf or Spiral Notebook dedicated to math and folder • Daily homework on loose-leaf paper (completed neatly with work shown) • Pencils/Eraser (no pen permitted) • Calculator (TI-34 II/Multiview) Please note: Sharing items during a quiz/test is not permitted and will be considered cheating. This includes sharing of calculators. Please bring your own supplies to class every day. Preparedness for class will be part of a daily grade. DAILY HOMEWORK Homework will be posted on the board and class blog (www.woods6thmath.blogspot.com). It is the student’s responsibility to copy their assignments into an assignment book. Announced quizzes and tests will be posted on the board and blog in a timely manner and updated as necessary to meet the needs of the class. In the event of a student’s absence from class, the student should make every effort to contact a classmate or email me to find out the assignment in order to refrain from falling behind.

GRADING POLICY Each quarter’s grade will be determined by the following criteria: 40% Tests & Major Projects 30% Quizzes & Mini Projects 30% Homework & Classwork The final course grade for the year will be determined by the following: 25% Quarter 1 25% Quarter 2 25% Quarter 3 25% Quarter 4 Students will be given a grade report sheet at minimum half-way through each quarter. Please share your grade information with your Parents/Guardians, and address any concerns with me immediately. COURSE OUTLINE While adjustments may be made throughout the year to fit the individual needs of the students, the current syllabus includes the following topics: Fall Semester Chapter 1 Decimal Patterns and Algebra Chapter 2 Statistics: Analyzing Data Chapter 3 Algebra: Integers Chapters 1-3 Cumulative Exam/Unit Project (TBD) Chapter 4 Algebra: Linear Equations and Functions Chapter 5 Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Chapter 6 Applying Fractions Chapters 4-6 Cumulative Exam/Unit Project (TBD) Midterm Exam (Chapters 1-6) Spring Semester Chapter 7 Ratios and Proportions Chapter 8 Applying Percent Chapter 9 Probability Chapters 7-9 Cumulative Exam/Unit Project (TBD) Chapter 10 Geometry Chapter 11 Geometry: Measuring 2D Figures Chapter 12 Geometry: Measuring 3D Figures EOG Preparation Chapters 10-12 Cumulative Exam/Unit Project (TBD) 6th Grade EOG Exam ADDITIONAL RESOURCES If a student is in need of extra help, please contact me immediately in person, on the phone, or by email.
