Spirituality and Mental Health: Compatibility and Conflicts

A training conference for all clinicians, Asian and Non-Asian:

The educational objectives are to be able to: 1. Develop a working knowledge about spirituality and mental health; 2. Learn to assess and intervene with Asian American clients and their family members in a holistic approach which includes spiritual, emotional, and cultural dimensions; 3. Address issues pertaining to Asian Americans and their spiritual/religious beliefs which may differ from that of the clinician, and discuss ways to collaborate with faith-based organizations in the community.

Spirituality and Mental Health: Compatibility and Conflicts

This one day training conference offers mental health professionals and students/ trainees an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in integrating spirituality in the treatment of mental health disorders for Asian Americans Clients. As a result of this training, participants will understand the importance of an Asian cultural perspective. Also through workshop presentations, they will learn culturally appropriate strategies in working with Asian American Clients with spiritual/religious beliefs. No pre-requisite is required. Each participant requesting CEU credits is required to fill out a program evaluation form.

Biographical Sketches Francis Lu, MD Francis Lu, MD is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is also the Director of the Cultural Competence and Diversity Program, Department of Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where he has worked for over 29 years. He is the founder of the Asian Focus Psychiatric Inpatient Program, which served as a model for 5 other programs serving Black, Latino, women, gay/lesbian and HIV patients. In 1987, the American Psychiatric Association awarded these programs a Certificate of Significant Achievement. In 1991, UCSF awarded Dr. Lu the Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Award for “extraordinary leadership and inspiration in furthering the goal of achieving ethnic diversity within the UCSF community”. In 1999, the American College of Psychiatrists awarded the Creativity in Psychiatric Education Award to these programs. He is nationally recognized in the study of spirituality and mental health.

Hanh D. Truong, PhD Hanh D. Truong, PhD is a former professor in the College of Health & Human Development, Departments of Human Services and Counseling, California State UniversityFullerton. He has worked internationally in Europe, Central America, and extensively in Asia, particularly in Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, China, and Hong Kong, providing clinical consultation and training for various universities and organizations. In California, he has worked as Chief for the Older Adult Mental Health Recovery Services Program of Orange County. Currently, he is working in the Department of Cultural Competency and Multi-Ethnic Services for County of Orange Health Care Agency in Santa Ana.
