Composer Points Chart Incentive Program Participating students: beginner, elementary, and intermediate piano students who are in the Basic and Standard Courses of study. Goal: to motivate students to develop effective practice habits, recognize and reward consistent efforts made to progress, and to encourage students to move beyond the studio in applying their developing skills at the piano. How the program works: • Students will each receive a “pawn” to use in the studio Chutes and Ladders game. • Students will be assigned to a composer team with their name added to the composer point’s chart. • Based on how thoroughly students meet weekly assignment criteria (as listed on each assignment sheet), they will roll 2 dice and move along the game board each week accumulating points determined by the square reached at the end of each move. Each week’s point’s total will be recorded on the student’s new assignment sheet. For each 25 points earned, a sticker will be placed on the composer chart directly above the student’s name resulting in a growing “sticker tower” to visually chart their progress. Each completed round on the game board is worth 100 points. Several rounds of play are possible during the course of the year. • Chutes will be ignored on the game board, but landing on ladders can catapult a student’s pawn several squares resulting in higher point’s totals. • Bonus points can be earned to allow students to add lots of points to their final total at the end of the year (see below for bonus details). • Various prizes will be available to earn depending on where the student’s final sticker falls on the composer chart. Prizes are as follows:  25-250 points=music pencil  250-425 points=laminated music pocket folder  425-500 points=sheet solo  500-675 points=composer statue (of the student’s team mascot)  675-900 points=music medal • Students will earn and receive one prize at the recital determined by their final point’s total including bonus points. • Students will NOT be competing against one another, but against themselves. A student’s point’s total is determined by that student’s individual efforts and accomplishments and will be rewarded accordingly. • Bonus points will be tallied separately from those received as a result of weekly dice rolls. They will be added to the board game total at the end of the playing time for a final point’s total. This final total will determine which prize is earned.

Bonus points: bonus points can be earned at any time during the year. The following is a list of the various point’s options and values: 1 point …  For each practice day beyond the expected 5 days per week.  For each technique skill securely demonstrated as pertains to the student’s level of study.  For sharing one fact about their composer (limited to 1 per lesson).  For listening to a classical music selection via radio, TV, ipod, CD, etc. and verified by filling out a simple form with parent’s initials. 5 points …  For each 5-day practice week.  For each 8 measure piece or section of a piece securely memorized.  For each piece recorded successfully on the student’s “Studio Recording Club” disk.  For presenting a private home performance concert of 5 learned pieces for family/friends. Student must list each piece played, date & time of concert, and audience members present (with initials from each). 15 points …  For each piece performed in a studio recital or adjudicated event during the year.  For any “out of studio/home” performance before a public audience (church, school, club, etc.). Student must record the title of selection, where played and date, and the initials of 3 persons who heard the performance. 25 points …  For attending a professional music concert (church, school, or community.) A program, ticket stub, or note must be signed by parent or other verifying adult. 50 points…  For attending a professional Classical music concert performance (Symphony, Choir, Chamber ensemble, etc.). A program/ticket stub must be signed by parent or other verifying adult. 75 points…  For having your piano tuned/serviced. Tuner’s business card must be dated and initialed by the tuner.

The decision to earn bonus points is left strictly up to the student. Students who do not land on many ladders will need bonus points to boost their point’s totals in order to earn a higher value prize at the end of the playing period. Have fun. 
