Why Expansion? Pakistan is currently the most urbanized country in South Asia. It is experiencing a rapid urban transition with a growth rate of urban population that is twice the rate of increase of the overall population. The pattern, therefore, is different from the rest of the developing world where, as noted by the United Nations study. Reportedly, Pakistan’s urban population is likely to equal its rural population by 2030, according to a report called ‘Life in the City: Pakistan in Focus’, released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in June 2007. Around 15 million people have migrated from rural to urban areas every year and it will increase year to year. The UN population division report reveals that the number of people in developing countries who live in cities has doubled since 1960 and on an average the component of urban population in these countries is now 40 per cent of the total. It is expected that by 2030, the urban population would comprise nearly 55 per cent of the total.
