Six bags to Pompano Middle, eight to Bennett Elementary … Last week we delivered about 100 bags. Cypress Elementary has entered into the fray,” said Hamberger on Nov. 19.

What to look for Signs of a chronically hungry child are often visible in his/her behavior: rushing the cafeteria line, asking other children for food, hoarding food (saving for later). Physi-

cally, the child may have very dry skin or chapped lips. Cafeteria workers are a good source of information about undernourished children among their students who receive free breakfast and lunch. Faculty and staff can refer a child to the Carry Out for Kids program. In this case, information is sent home with the child about the opportunity for food bags. Before Christmas break, information will also be sent home about Blessings Food Pantry, an additional resource for families struggling to feed their children. Pastor Fawn Mikel said they feed about 1,000 a month

through the food pantry, operated out of the Pompano campus since 2004. “I see more and more people all the time,” she added.

The vision, and how Carry Out began Mikel said she learned about “kitchen ministries” at a conference in Orlando in January 2009. She had lunch with Hamberger soon afterward and the rest is history. “Maggie is really passionate about this!” said Mikel. In late summer, volunteers met with four principals of Title 1 schools the church already partners with for mentoring and reading buddies. More than a dozen people have volunteered so far. “The generosity of the community is just overwhelming!” said Hamberger. Mikel believes there are many churches that would want to partner with local schools. “My dream is that every school would have a Carry Out for Kids program.
