Elements & Compounds
Element: is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom. Examples:
Carbon atoms
Oxygen molecules
Compound: is a pure substance that is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded. Examples:
Sucrose Molecule
Water Molecules
States of Matter A change in state, is a physical change. The four states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma
1- Solid: A solid matter, has a definite volume and definite shape. Particles in a solid, are packed together in fixed positions. Particles are held close together by strong attractive forces between them. Particles only vibrate about fixed positions.
2- Liquid: A liquid matter, has a definite volume, but indefinite shape. Particles in liquids, are close to each other, but can move past each other. Particles in liquids, can temporarily over come the attractive forces between them.
3- Gas: A gaseous matter, has neither definite shape, nor definite volume. Particles in gases, move very rapidly, and at large distances from each other. Particles in gases, have much weaker attractive forces between them.
4- Plasma: Plasma is a high temperature state of matter in which atoms lose their electrons.
