States of Matter A change in state, is a physical change. The four states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma

- Solid:  A solid matter, has a definite volume and definite shape.  Particles in a solid, are packed together in fixed positions.  Particles are held close together by strong attractive forces between them.  Particles only vibrate about fixed positions.

- Liquid:  A liquid matter, has a definite volume, but indefinite shape.  Particles in liquids, are close to each other, but can move past each other.  Particles in liquids, can temporarily over come the attractive forces between them.

- Gas:  A gaseous matter, has neither definite shape, nor definite volume.  Particles in gases, move very rapidly, and at large distances from each other.  Particles in gases, have much weaker attractive forces between them.

- Plasma:  Plasma is a high temperature state of matter in which atoms lose their electrons.
