To save cost we will not write to unsuccessful candidates Major new campaign launches to get more people into nature Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham yesterday (7 July) launched a national campaign to get more people out of their homes and into nature. The campaign, run by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), focuses on Scotland’s suite of 55 national nature reserves. These rank among the top wildlife sites in Europe and one of the aims is to foster greater pride in this and encourage more people to enjoy nature at its best. Launching the campaign in the tranquil surroundings of the Loch Leven national nature reserve, Roseanna Cunningham said: “We are fortunate in Scotland to have such special places on our doorstep. They are a fantastic place to get away from the daily bustle of life, to unwind and to appreciate the natural beauty of our landscapes and habitats. “Loch Leven is a prime example of everything that is wonderful about national nature reserves and I am sure this campaign will encourage more people to get out and enjoy them.” Using billboards and posters the campaign will bring the natural beauty of the reserves into the heart of the cities. The images, by photographer Chris Close, feature stunning views of Loch Leven by Kinross, Beinn Eighe in Ross-shire and Forvie in Aberdeenshire, tagged with the message “We’ve kept a place for you”. A new pocket visitor guide and national nature reserve website will also be launched as part of the campaign. SNH chairman Andrew Thin said: “These reserves are absolutely stunning places where people really can see Scotland’s nature at its best. We want to encourage as many people as possible to get out there and enjoy for themselves the benefits of the reserves. That’s what this campaign is all about. Wherever you are in Scotland, you shouldn’t be too far from a national nature reserve.” Some national nature reserves are owned by public bodies or wildlife charities, and others are privately owned. All of them are managed for the benefit of both wildlife and people, and provide opportunities to enjoy nature and learn the importance of conserving it for future generations.
