Artist Statement: A Disobedient Civilian During a Controversial War Maya Jimenez In my essay, I strove to highlight the topic of opposition against the Mexican-American war. I also mentioned the reasons for being against the war, individual ideologies, and the criticism of representative government. In the end, I highlighted the relevance of the themes in movements after it was written to today. The essay is the product of not wanting the war, but also the product of refusing to pay the taxes that would continue funding it. I chose this topic because of how influential the essay was to movements later on in history and sill is, as well as the eloquence of his word choice, fluency in getting his ideas across, and purposeful figurative language. I used a format that I found on the internet as well as my past knowledge. In the first paragraph, I included a hook to engage the audience, a quote, a question presented to the audience, and the thesis I would prove in the essay. In the next three paragraphs, I presented three topics: the reasons for being against the war, individual ideologies, and the criticism of representative government. Finally, I stated its relevance today and restated the thesis in the conclusion.
