ADDRESSING THE NEED FOR BETTER COMMUNICATION IN OUR ORGANISATION AND PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE
Jessen SOOBRAYEN
2009 LOM Vice President Public Relations & International
Dear Readers, We had a dream to encourage social development, a dream to develop entrepreneurship, a dream to enhance individual development and a dream to create better leaders. Our dream became our challenge, which is shining today through JCI City Plus.
Those were the very first words of my immediate predecessor, in his editorial in our newsletter last year. And dear friends, those dreams are still on! However, like everybody else, we are now going through some difficult times. Available resources are running low. And that includes member participation in our LOM activities.
We are now starting a new proactive communication policy with our new e‐newsletter. You, stakeholders, will be kept fully informed about what your organisation is doing, and where it is going. And to get there, we will require your full help and support. I would also like to emphasise that this is your newsletter. You can use it freely as per your needs. As a shout box—to raise any issue. As a marketing tool—to promote yourself and/or your business. The list goes on... Dear fellow City members, we’re still at the beginning. And we still have a long way to go to fulfil our dreams...
Dearest JCI City Plus Friends,
Greetings from your National President!! It is with immense pleasure that I am writing to you on the occasion of your first e‐newsletter for 2009. It is already 3 months since I took office as 2009 JCI Mauritius National President and I can tell you that the first quarter of the year was a very busy one. We have already completed the JCI Mauritius National Debate Competition, National Public Speaking Competition, LOM/ NOM officers training and last but not least we have hosted the visit of IVP Victorien TOUGOUMA from the 22nd to 25th March 2009. Now we are looking forward to welcome the 2009 JCI World th th President, Jun Sup SHIN, in Mauritius from the 8 to 10 April 2009. Moreover, this year is a special one for JCI Mauritius as we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary. The motto of my presidential year is Leading Our Organization ALL‐TOGETHER. My wish is to bring all members of JCI Mauritius to work hand in hand as a TEAM in the JCI Spirit. Please don’t forget that the most important people in this organization is you, our members. You are the key element which will make JCI Mauritius be an organization of young leaders and entrepreneurs to create positive changes.

JCI City Plus is a newly born Chapter. I was a special witness when JCI City Plus was created in 2007 as it was during my office as 2007 LOM President of JCI Port Louis. I wish to congratulate and thank 2008 LOM President Veena LANGUR for her hard work and dedication to make JCI City Plus shine as from its first year of existence. It was a challenge for her to start JCI City Plus and with the help of the founder members, they have succeeded. I also with to congratulate 2009 LOM President Vidya LANGUR for leading JCI City Plus this year and I am confident that she will bring your beloved Chapter to new heights. With quality and dedicated members, JCI City Plus can only continue to shine and BE BETTER. Thank you also for your support to NOM projects of JCI Mauritius. As conclusion, I shall invite you all to join the whole JCI Mauritius family to work together according to the new Vision and Mission of JCI and let us be an exemplary Warm Regards organization which shall create positive changes in our Mike CHAN TSO SYE society. 2009 National President All the best to JCI City Plus! Dear JCI City Plus Members & Aspiring Members,
A few words from your Founder President…
It is with great pleasure that I am addressing you all! 2009 is going to be a very challenging year for 2009 LOM President and LOM Board Members as the baby LOM will be going on its two years and should run faster or try to keep the same pace as last year. We are well aware that already after its birth JCI City Plus has been strained to run instead of baby steps or to walk. However, it has shown due to its very committed members & aspiring members a supernatural capability to meet challenges and stand by the PLUS factor. Keep it up! I would like to wish the 2009 President, LOM board members, members and aspiring members all the best and hope from the bottom of my heart that you uphold the same endeavour to serve your LOM. Yours in JCI Spirit

Veena LANGUR
2009 Immediate Past President
Dear Members and Aspiring Members It is with immense pleasure and emotion that I am wishing you all have started year 2009 with great enthusiasm, new challenges, resolutions and passion to fulfill your dreams.
In its second year, JCI City Plus will be your
Gateway to be Better This motto is certainly one which means that we want each one of you to meet, grow, discover and transform yourself to be better in every way you can by learning from one another and sharing your own experience through accomplishing projects in the four area of opportunities. My role of president will be just void if I didn’t have the support of my board members and the support and commitment of each one of you. I thank you all for all that you have achieved so far and contributed to the moving forward of our family. I wish and hope that the bonding we have had so far will be even stronger and we will leave no stones unturned to accomplish projects and be present to support the events and activities of JCI City plus and also give our usual support to JCI Mauritius to make its 25 years a memorable year. I would not be president this year if I had not attended the JCI African Academy. I would not have participated in Area A Public speaking competition if I would not have represented JCI Mauritius as Public speaking winner. I wouldn’t be a winner if I hadn’t participated in the National Public speaking competition. I also took the challenge and participated in the

debating competition. It’s just to tell you, that JCI has so many opportunities and it’s up to you to grasp them as early as you can. Time waits for no one and the opportunities you miss today may never knock your door again… The time to act is NOW! Make the most you can in your “one year to lead…” The one year gone, may it be full of so much new achievements that you will wait and plan in advance for next year and never stop till you are satisfied …that indeed your contribution has lead to “Global Impact, through local action”. This year’s motto urges each one of us to act now as the world needs us… Climate change has started and we need to put our efforts together to act wisely and encourage the whole nation also to do so. We believe… that the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations… that earth’s greatest treasure lies in human personality… Dare to Better and make only the Best things happen, through JCI City plus. Wish you all a bright JCI Career and an enriching year ahead.
Yours in JCI Spirit

Project Report: Open Day
To celebrate its first year of existence, JCI City Plus held an open day at th Port Louis Waterfront on 25 October 2008 where two projects were run in parallel‐ the Art Mela and Le Dépistage du Diabète in collaboration with APSA International. This event was proudly sponsored by Deutsche Bank Mauritius Limited since it was a good opportunity for them to promote their community service campaign in Mauritius. Furthermore, we are also thankful for the Individual contributions of JCI and non‐JCI Members. The main objectives were:
Art Mela: a fun painting activity, giving the opportunity to handicapped children to paint up their minds and express freely their respective creativity. The activity regrouped children from the Charitable Institutions of: • Anou Grandi L’Amitié, Rivière du Rempart • Hospice Namasté Roche Brunes, Beau Bassin • A.P.E.I.M Port Louis
Official Sponsor
Official Partner
Le Dépistage du Diabète: to sensitise the public against diabetes and encourage people to be more health conscious in their day to day activities. This allowed: • 150 persons received free counselling on diabetes prevention • 125 persons received free diabetes screening tests
We all know the theories and structures for a good project. Above all the JCI City Plus Open Day was a success due to the enthusiasm of the children and the concern of the public for their health. Moreover the participation of NOM Board members, LPs, members from other JCI local organizations, parents and last but not least the sponsorship and active involvement of members of Deutsche Bank Mauritius Limited and APSA International made it a day to remember.
The JCI City Plus Open Day received the award for the Best Public Relation Event for the year 2008. This honourable distinction showed that although we are the newest LOM, we have a winning team. But still winning prizes is not the ultimate motive of JCI but a recognition for the good work achieved as an active citizen.
I was embarked in an adventure to discover the world of JCI. I thank JCI City Plus IPP Veena LANGUR who gave me the opportunity to sit on the JCI school bench to learn and exploit my talent fully to be a better leader of tomorrow.

Project Report: LOMs Night
JCI is not only about working on projects. Our members often meet up for a drink, a quick chat ... to socialise. And as a stimulating and encouraging feature, we have the famous annual LOMs night organised as recognition of the efforts and dedication of their team members accompanied by an Awards Ceremony. It is a chance to express sincere appreciation towards all its members and rejoice after a years’ of hard work. During a whole year, all team members have been learning, attending trainings, dealing with business issues and focusing in making projects successful. And after the all these efforts spent, we do need a break and just have fun. So the LOMs night is the best opportunity to chill out, relax and take things easy. It is the best moment for enjoyment and not to forget building and strengthening the long lasting relationships with the team members as well as members of different LOM since at a certain point of time members of different LOM have been working on National Projects. It would not be right to say that everything is nice and rosy in any institution or organisation. Team members do have clashes among themselves. LOM Night is best moment to sweeten the relationship and eliminate the existing sourness thus strengthen partnership among different LOM. It is also a moment of sharing the good and bad times we had together. Recruiting, motivating, building up the confidence and sharing of international experiences can be made to the aspiring members, team members and board members. We can also outline all our sponsors through the year who have contributed towards the projects and built up a better and bigger network.
Overall, we had a very good year as well as a successful LOMs Night. Big thanks to all of you!!! Project Team:

Project Report: Noel Magique
JCI City Plus organised its first edition of Noel Magique on 22nd and 23rd of December 2008 with the children of Anou Grandi (Rivière du Rempart) and Case Noyale. For this edition, we had the support of a team of students from three colleges ‐ RCC, LCQB and Hindu Girls ‐ and Radio One as our main sponsor. The main objective was to share the joy and happiness of Christmas and New Year with these wonderful children. Indeed, we must not forget that there are still many people in our country who have no right to enjoy a real Christmas. When we say no right, we do mean they are too poor to buy even the cheapest of Christmas gifts. .. Nevertheless, for this edition, some 250 children were given a gift. And for that, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to our collaborators and our sponsor, Radio One. On the 22nd we went to Anou Grandi for the distribution of gifts and the children together with their teachers prepared some fun activities and sang Christmas carols. Official Sponsor rd And on the 23 we went to Case Noyale a small fishing village on the West coast of the island. The activities conducted for the children were musical chair, face painting, and distribution of gifts by Santa Klaus. The children were also given the opportunity to sing Christmas carols live on Radio One, which offered a great media coverage for that occasion. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students involved, the young leaders of tomorrow and maybe future JCI members, to be better in active citizenship, whilst getting a glimpse of the kind of activities that JCI CITY PLUS is indulged in. And the live media coverage was obviously a big plus for our PR!!!
This year, we are looking forward to bring this event to other regions of Mauritius.

Think Green
[CD1]
What is a carbon footprint? A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day‐to‐day lives through all types of pollution. The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent. FYI, try to take a peek at our carbon footprint here… You will be unpleasantly surprised. Dear friends, we must act now! The aim of our Think Green project is to target several means to help us minimise this effect. Through the Think Green project JCI City Plus want to contribute to the national endeavour in making Mauritius “une ile durable”.
Nothing but Nets
[CD2]
In Sub‐Saharan Africa, malaria is the largest single cause of death among children under the age of five, killing one child every 30 seconds, more than 800,000 per year. Malaria has been brought under control and even eliminated in many parts of Asia, Europe and the Americas. Yet in Africa, malaria infections have actually increased over the last three decades. Insecticide‐treated bed nets (ITNs) are a form of personal protection that has repeatedly been shown to reduce severe disease and mortality due to malaria in endemic regions. Indeed studies show that use of insecticide‐treated bed nets can reduce transmission as much as 90% in areas with high coverage rates. To maintain the efficacy of ITNs, the nets must be retreated at intervals of 6‐12 months, more frequently if the nets are washed. Re‐treatment is done by simply dipping nets in a mixture of water and insecticide and allowing the nets to dry in a shady place. Kits for retreating nets are available in most countries. The need for frequent re‐treatments is one of the most difficult barriers to full implementation of ITNs in endemic countries. The additional cost of the insecticide and the lack of understanding of its importance result in very low re‐treatment rates in most African countries. Several companies have developed long‐lasting ITNs that theoretically retain lethal concentrations of insecticide for the life of the net (3‐5 years). In this context, JCI City Plus wishes to contribute to this cause by organising a series of fund raising activities.
JCI Olympiads
[PR3]
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of JCI Mauritius, JCI City Plus will organise the first edition of JCI Olympiad. The event will be an amalgamation of sport competitions and fun activities for the JCI Family and our some of our sponsors and friends. It will be an opportunity to each and every one: • To promote mass participation for physical activities • To expand their talents • To rediscover their passion for sports • To build team spirit The provisional venue is Maryse Justin stadium @ Réduit and the date will be finalised in respect to the other JCI Projects.

Goodbye Shalini SUKHARI…
*
How will you describe a rising star? Well that’s Shalini! She joined in the JCI Family in 2007 when she joined in the team of new potential founder members for our new LOM. She enthusiastically grasped every opportunity to learn and grow. Shalini started her JCI journey of responsibilities by being the Master of Ceremony of Boat House Social Event in December 2007. She accepted the post of Business Director, then was nominated as Vice President Human Resource and directed the 1st JCI Business Network Event of year 2008 – BNE with a smile. Being a very active Member she participated in many projects – Project Secretary of 2008 CYEA, Team Member of 2008 TOYP, co‐Master of Ceremony of 2008 EVP Banquet, Project Treasurer of 2008 JCI Day, Team Member of JCI City Plus Open Day.
Welcome
A few lines from our new members… Joining City plus is a wonderful experience as it gives not only the possibility to serve but also to learn and share experiences. City Plus is typically same as the Gaule Village. It holds individuals who each have their own temperament and capacity. Combined them together is like packing up several chemicals which will resume to an astounding reaction.. They are these Joyeux Lurons facing life and commitments boldly together while enjoying and laughing. My first project participation was the LOMs night. It has given me the opportunity to interact with these fellow members and thus create a bond of friendship and learn a lot.
Nuvin PUTTEN
Associate Member It resumes a theme called Team spirit which recall in my workplace Investec Bank Mauritius Ltd. As an IT & Facility officer I have got a lot to do from mending office space, security of systems, and maintenance of our systems...etc. So it ends to a lot of Challenges and without cooperation and bits of understanding, nothing could be achieved.
So to sum up and from the famous quote “To be or not to be”, the year has just started and a very long way to go. Henceforth let us “Rock & Roll” together with all the opportunities & responsibilities to come.
Shalini did not only shine in her own LOM and the NOM, she was also participated in other LOMs activities. For dedication and endeavour, she was rewarded the Member of the Month of May 2008 and 2008 Most Participative Member Programme Winner. She was elected LOM Secretary for 2009. She fervently served JCI City Plus in this position for 3 months. But she had other destination waiting for her!
JCI City Plus wishes her all the best for her new destination!

JCI! Heard it from many friends and my curiosity did the rest… I joined JCI City Plus in December 2008 as an aspiring member.
Veena! A sister and a very good friend… During my observation I saw her struggling very hard in almost all activities to make JCI City Plus a success story.
Tanuja BENIDIN Member
Big thanks to Vidya, Shweta, Yudhish and Jessen for guiding, helping and encouraging me!! I just observed the activities they indulged in and I was eager to help. Going to meetings, participating in trainings and projects and get to know a whole new bunch of people who have now become really good friends... My great satisfaction up to date has been helping the people of Anou Grandi. Well, there are more to come and am very eager to give a helping hand…

The birth and rise of a new LOM By Veena LANGUR Founder President
On 15th September 2007, 24 adventurous souls accepted a new challenge and were sworn in as founder members of JCI City Plus. Thus, a new Local Organisation of Members was born… This LOM was affiliated to JCI Mauritius on 19th October 2007 in the General Meeting during 2007 NATCON (National Convention) chaired by 2007 National President Bashir Mahamode. Before this event could become a reality, there were hard struggles made; the idea of creating a new LOM sprouted from 2006 JCI Port Louis LOM President Bashir MAHAMODE. After several attempts, 2007 JCI Port Louis LOM President Affiliated during NATCON 2007 Mike CHAN TSO SYE offered the tiller of the ship to Veena LANGUR on board with Sen. Bruneau WOOMED, Chandrani GOPAUL, Vidya LANGUR, Vamen POONOOSAMY, Yosi RAMEN, Jhateen RAMNARAIN and Oumesh RAJNAT. JCI City Plus started its journey with a lot of enthusiasm and vivacity with its motto Shine & Inspire. The 2008 Board Members were: Veena LANGUR, Founder President – Chandrani GOPAUL, Secretary – Kovisha Rungasamy, Treasurer – Yosi RAMEN, Vice President Business – Jhateen RAMNARAIN, Vice President Community Development – Vidya LANGUR, Vice President Individual Development – Vamen POONOOSAMY, Vice President Public Relations & International – Mahomed YEARALLY/Shalini SUKHARI, Vice President Human Resource – Senator Bruneau WOOMED, Advisor / Legal Counsellor

The start of the 1st year was exuberant with several projects launched simultaneously. 2008 was determining year for JCI City Plus, the new born baby LOM as it was propelled to walk and run as grown up LOM. The upshot was praiseworthy as the following projects/activities were carried out in the four areas of opportunities:
Community Development
National Debating EVP Banquet NBBPC TOYP Competition
International
Think Green Art Mela Dépistage du Diabète Noel Magique
African Leadership Academy AreaA Conference World Public Speaking Comp. World Debating Comp. World Congress
Not bad at all for a new LOM isn’t it!! However, in hindsight, the baby LOM was probably trying to run too fast, too soon… Henceforth, the new board members have decided to slow down the pace and refocus on some core projects only in the near future… We may be going through some hard times but we have shown, and will continue to show that we can really Shine & Inspire!

A very tangible benefit members receive is training and individual development at a fraction of the cost charged by universities or professional development companies. We are, as a matter of fact, a practical university, since members learn by actively participating in our various projects
For those who want to travel the world… JCI is an international organization in over 100 nations. Our World Congress is held in November each year. In 2008 it was in India and this year, Tunisia here we come! Our members are given numerous other opportunities to look beyond our national borders and form friendship, partnership, and business contacts with people of different cultures
