TOPIC: PREPARE A CASE STUDY OF PROBLEMS FACED BY INDIAN INDUSTRIES IN IMPLEMENTING THE CONCEPT OF CIM WHAT IS CIM? The term CIM comprises three wordsComputer, Integrated and Manufacturing. Thus CIM is an attempt to combine computer technologies in order to manage and control the entire manufacturing and business.

CIM STRATEGIES: CIM can be used as a strategy for enterprise resource planning for business - wide level of integration. This indicates the relationship between business process engineering and computerintegrated manufacturing with an objective to achieve the enterprise integration and management for improving productivity and quality. The motivation for CIM has been based on the perceived need for the manufacturing industry to respond to changes more rapidly than in the past. CIM promises many benefits including increased machine utilization, reduced work-in-process inventory, increased productivity of working capital, reduced number of machine tools, reduced labour costs, reduced lead times, more consistent product quality, less floor space and reduced set-up costs.

INTEGRATION AND ADAPTABILITY ISSUES: The integration and adaptability issues are generally affected by factors such as business strategy, manufacturing strategy, availability of knowledge workers, software professionals, complexity of material flow, information flow pattern and decision making processes, product and process complexities, supplier/purchasing activities, behavioural issues, etc. The major components of CIM are CAD/CAM technologies, computer numerically control (CNC) equipment, robots, and FMS technology. The computer system is used to integrate design and then manufacturing process and other production planning and control systems (such as inventories, materials, schedules, etc.) and the integration of manufacturing activities with both vendors and suppliers.

MODELS OF CIM ARCHITECTURE: CIM is a concept of production realisation using, to the maximum extent possible, integration of information flows in an enterprise. Processes covered by integration include, first of all, production preparation and planning, manufacturing, control of material flow and inventory, quality control and others, which are not directly connected with the production process. CIM concept has three sources: 1. Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS’s), which emerged as a result of the development of NC, CNC numerical control techniques. 2. Graphical data processing systems, affording possibilities for computer support of development (R&D), product construction and production planning processes. 3. IT systems supporting management of individual subsystems within an enterprise: accounting, personnel and remuneration, production planning, material management, etc.

The research should be further strengthened towards developing optimised CIM systems to control the scarce resources we are having today and to meet the current competitive and agility requirements.
