The first church, circa the early 1900s ~ Photo submitted A Condensed History The Green Hill Church of Christ began meeting in 1909 in a borrowed one room school house located about one mile west of the present building. Families which began this work here were Esq. Jim Adams, a Mrs. Bass and her daughter, Flossie (Mrs. Will Burlington) of Donelson, Bob High and family, Mrs. W.T. Hunter (grandmother of Edward Rice) and daughters, Charlie Jackson, Jeff Jones family from Tulip Grove, Miss Add Ligon, Mr. Jeff Mabry and family, Miss Kate McDaniel, and Mr. Jim Smith. Brother Bob High was the only leader in the congregation for many years. He led the prayers, singing, served the table for the Lord’s Supper, and taught the class. Buildings By 1920, the congregation had outgrown the borrowed school house. It became apparent that a more spacious building with complete amenities was needed. At that time they bought a church building nearby that had been erected by a Methodist congregation and then abandoned for lack of membership. It was a one room frame, about 25’ x 40’, heated by two coal burning stoves, and lighted by kerosene lamps. The lamps were used only during the annual meeting as there were no night worship services. In July of 1924,
gas lamps replaced the kerosene lamps. In August of 1926, electricity became available and electric lights were installed. In 1941, it was decided to add three Sunday School rooms to the rear of the auditorium. As there was not a bapistry in the building, most baptisms were performed in Cedar Creek behind the house of Bro. Granville Goodall. In May of 1945, Bro. N.B. Nokes proposed to donate toward a new building, provided the remainder of the congregation would raise matching funds. This proposition was considered and accepted. In March of 1950, construction began. On October 15, 1950, the congregation moved into the new building. When the present auditorium and eight original basement class rooms were erected in 1950, it was thought to be large enough for future growth for the next fifty years. By 1967, it became apparent that future expansion for our educational facilities was necessary. Thirteen class rooms, two rest rooms, two dressing rooms, and a nursery were added. East and West wings were added to the auditorium in 1975, doubling the seating capacity. A new foyer with church library and office See CHURCH, Page 8

Type A flu claims Wilson Central guidance counselor Kellie Whited By Jennifer Horton Special to The Chronicle Kellie Whited, a much-loved guidance counselor at Wilson Central High School who three years ago received a double-lung transplant for a rare condition, died early Wednesday morning. A website that had a link for everyone to keep up with her said Whited died from Type A Influenza and had signs of a bacterial and viral infection. She became sick on Aug. 27. She was 39. Whited and her husband Brad were parents of Caleb, 7. Students at Wilson Central were informed of her death last Wednesday morning by Principal Travis Mayfield. “It’s a sad day,” he said. Whited was diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension, or PPH, in 2002. The illness has been described as “a narrowing and stiffening of the pulmonary arteries that leave the right side of the heart and travel to the lungs. The right side of the heart must work especially hard to push against this diseased area and therefore the heart develops complications as well.” The disease is rare and afflicts one in a million people. Whited received her new lungs on July 19, 2006. Mayfield called all seniors at Wilson Central into the auditorium where he told them about Whited. Each guidance counselor follows students from their freshmen through their senior years. “I met with the seniors. Mrs. Whited had been with those kids four years,” he said. “I told them as a group.” Other students were informed as well. Guidance counselors from Southside and Mt. Juliet were at WCHS, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes sent some representatives and local youth pastors were also available for students and staff to talk to during the day. Mayfield said students asked to go outside to the flagpole where they offered prayers. He noted the students and staff “want to remember her in a positive light and want to do different memorials for her
and her family. There are some emotional students and some emotional teachers (here). You’re never prepared. She was a great person and had such an impact on our students. She inspired some of these students to be thankful and to live up to their potential.” Whited’s family
released a statement which said “Kellie Whited’s life has touched countless people across this country and especially in this county. She lived her life as an inspiration to all. The majority of her life outside the home was spent at Wilson Central High School as a guidance counselor. Many of these young people are receiving a college education today because of her untiring dedication to her profession. Along with being a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister, daughter-in-law and sisterin-law, Kellie was involved in many activities such as: -- a Sunday School teacher at Fairview Church and friend to many there. The people of this congregation gathered around this family in support on multiple occasions. -- Joykeepers Bible Study with a group of women from various churches in Wilson County. -“Donate Life” as a volunteer due to the fact she received a double lung transplant three years ago due to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. “To Brad, Kellie was known as ‘his girl’ and now Kellie is known as ‘his angel.’ Caleb always prayed for his mom to not be sick anymore and to get better. Oh, the wisdom of a 7-year-old. “Kellie received and gave love to a very large extended family. She has forever placed her handprint on the hearts of all of us. “Kellie never once complained during her
illness and surgeries. She could be sick and in the hospital and then back to work the next day because she had the driving force to “help those kids” at Wilson Central.” The family also wanted to thank “Dr. Ivan Robbins, Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Specialist, at Vanderbilt Hospital and the entire transplant team. To the nurses and staff in MICU this past week who were always in ‘full court press,’ thank you as well. You are awesome!” Lorie Tomlinson, secretary in the Guidance Office at Wilson Central, said, “We are going to miss her.” She noted that Mayfield also told students “how much she cared about them. She made it a point to get up and be here.” Others interviewed in previous articles about Whited and her illness and transplant reiterated her dedication not only to her family but to her students as well and noted that whenever See WHITED, Page 4

Page 4, The Chronicle of Mt. Juliet, September 9, 2009 WHITED, from Page 3 her health permitted as she was awaiting the transplant, she would be at school. Tomlinson noted that since Whited’s transplant, her immune system was kept low so that she would not reject her new lungs. And as soon as she could, she returned to work at
Wilson Central. “She absolutely would not stay home,” Tomlinson said. Whited was at work on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and “was fine,” she said, before falling ill on Thursday. Tomlinson said Whited called from the hospital on Thursday around lunchtime regarding

grade transcripts for seniors that she had been working on and wanted to make sure they were completed. Tomlinson said she told her it had already been taken care of by her and other guidance counselors Debbie Hill, Jodi Davis and Lindsey McPherson. “She said ‘OK.’ The biggest thing on her mind was those senior transcripts being taken care of,” Tomlinson said, adding that Whited was sedated by medical personnel a short time later. Her phone call was the last communication they had from her. Her long-time friend Darla Steed said, “She impacted a lot of kids in
this community. She never stopped and went back to work. Kellie lived a normal life and went to work every day, took Caleb to karate.” Steed noted her friend’s faith – they were members of Fairview Church in Lebanon – and reminded how the Joy Keepers class organized a fashion show in 2006 which Whited attended a few months after her transplant which raised funds to help the family with medical and living expenses. “Kellie was a dear friend of unwavering faith. She fought a good fight and now has ultimate healing as she sits at the feet of her King!”
Tomlinson said the staff at Wilson Central talked on Wednesday how the disease that Whited had, PPH, happens to one in a million and how “she really was one in a million. She was upbeat and happy, not a worrier. She took care of those kids. They were her number one priority outside of her family,” she added. Services for Mrs. Kellie Johnston Whited, 39, of Lebanon, were Saturday, Sept. 5 at Fairview Church, 1660 Leeville Pike, Lebanon, with Brother Michael Christian officiating. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery. For more information see Page

Some 45 veterans living in the Del Webb community in Mt. Juliet recently banded together to raise money to erect a flagpole behind the community’s clubhouse. Called “Flag on the Point,” veterans asked community members to donate $50.00 to install flags at their residences, which six veterans worked to install last week. With help from Lowe’s of Mt. Juliet, the group met their monetary goal needed to buy the 50 foot flagpole, installation kit, and oversized flag, but community residents continue to ask for more flags. Preachers It is impossible to list all who have preached for the congregation during the past 100 years. If such as list were possible, few of the very well known preachers would be left out. For many
years there was a different preacher nearly every month. During the early years, preaching was held once a month. The preacher’s salary was generally paid by the amount of contribution collected that day. On
March 6, 1921, Bro. Burton preached and received $2.60 for his effort. Irby C. Pullias preached on a regular basis from 1924 through 1948, and held gospel meetings in 1925, 1958, and 1965. His

faithfulness and devotion to the Lord’s work during the lean years and trying times was perhaps the difference between success and failure of the church. His wise counsel was needed and heeded by the elders under whose oversight he labored. Athens Clay Pullias, although never engaged to work regularly with the congregation, was a true friend and ever present throughout the years. He held several gospel meetings in the 1930’s, and also in 1948 and 1966. On many occasions where there was no regular preacher or the church was “in-between” regular preachers, Brother Pullias either made a personal visit or sent a substitute. Part-time preaching was the rule until 1949. At that time the brethren saw the need for having preaching each Lord’s Day. Dr. Robert Kerce was selected to work with the congregation, and preached on a regular basis until August, 1952. Dr. Howard White began regular work in January, 1953, through December 1956. Ralph Nance succeeded Bro. White, and preached through September 1958. Dr. Roy Ott preached from October 1958 through July 1959. Burrell Prince worked on a regular basis from January 1961 until September 1963, and also returned to assist during the 1980’s. Ralph Carnahan preached from October 1963 until June 1964. Herbert Ledford then preached through the remainder of 1964 and was the first preacher to live in the new preacher’s residence. Wayne Coats began preaching January 1965 and continued until 1980. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, our fulltime preachers included Ken Thomas (1980-1984), Dell Kimberly, Bill Goodpasture, David East, and Bill Wolfe. August Ruff became our fulltime minister in January 1998 and continues to this day. With regard to gospel meetings, the most recent annual meetings have been conducted by Ken Thomas, Frank Chesser, James Watkins, and Winford Claiborne. Mt. Juliet High School Golden Bears Players of the Week
MT. JULIET -- Golden Bear quarterback Reed Gurchiek applies a stiff arm to a Gallatin defender during Friday’s home-opening 42-35 victory over the Green Wave. Gurchiek ran for 183 yards on 22 attempts and completed 3-of-6 passes for 156 yards. He scored the game-winning TD on a one-yard plunge with 11:25 left in the contest. Mt. Juliet improved to 2-0 with the win and will host 3-0 Whites Creek High Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. ~ Photo by RANDY SELF / www.selfphoto.ifp3.com From staff reports Mt. Juliet High remained undefeated on the still-young season with a thrilling 42-35 victory over District 9AAA rival Gallatin Friday night in the Bear home-opener. Senior quarterback Reed Gurchiek led the Mt. Juliet assault with 170 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He added 154 yards passing on a 3-of-6 effort and another score. Gurchiek put Mt. Juliet (1-0, 2-0) ahead 35-28 with a 44-yard touchdown
run late in the third quarter, but Gallatin quarterback Enriques Perry tied the score at 35 on the first play of the next drive with an 80-yard touchdown run. It took the Golden Bears just five plays to take the lead for good. A 43-yard run by Chris Bazile and a 30-yard pass from Gurchiek to Mikee Brown set up Gurchiek’s one-yard scoring plunge at the 11:25 mark of the fourth quarter. Things don’t get any easier for the Bears this week as undefeated (3-0)

Annual Pow Wow to celebrate Native American culture From staff reports The public is invited to celebrate Native American culture at the 28th annual Mt. Juliet Pow Wow on Sept. 26-27 at Charlie Daniels Park. The Pow Wow is especially meaningful this year, organizers said, as Gov. Phil Bredesen has signed a bill by the legislature making September “American Indian Heritage Month” in Tennessee. The bill recognizes Native Americans, as descendants of the original inhabitants of the United States, for their military service and for their contributions to society in many different fields. It also encourages Tennesseans to observe the month “with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities, including activities relating to the culture, traditions and languages of Native Americans,” according to the bill. The gates to the park will open at 10:30 a.m. on both days and the opening ceremonies will take place
at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 26. Rep. Susan Lynn, who sponsored the bill, Sen. Mae Beavers, Mayor Linda Elam and Alfred Berryhill, Second Chief of the Muscogee Creek Nation in Oklahoma, will be
in attendance. The first event is the fifth annual “Trail of Tears” walk, which will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday at Cedar Ridge Church and end at Cook’s United Methodist Church. There will be a service followed by a free breakfast at Cook’s for everyone who participates in the walk. The commemorative
walk was created to recognize the hardships suffered by the five tribes of the Southeast (Muscogee Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole) who walked their “Trail of Tears” to Oklahoma Indian Territory after the Indian Removal Act by President Andrew Jackson. The walk is sponsored by Cook’s United Methodist Church, Mt. Juliet Pow Wow and the Native American Gatherer’s Fellowship. There will be Native American food, arts and crafts, music and dancing, as well as a silversmith on site during the Pow Wow. More than $11,000 in prize money will be awarded for drum and dance contests. Admission is free for children 5 and under, $4 for ages 6-12, and $7 for everyone 13 and older. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring lawn chairs. For more information on the Pow Wow, visit www. mtjulietpowwow.com, contact Cindy Yahola at 4431537, or email her at Cindy Yahola@mtjulietpowwow. com.

Reflections from an Old Friend MJCA Celebrates 30 Years Who would have thought that little ole Mt. Juliet would have grown up to be such a great place to live, work, shop, play and get the best education around? We’re surely more than a wide spot in the road now. People all across this great country now know exactly where Mt. Juliet is. As a matter of fact, I go around telling people you might have heard of us. The exciting thing about maturing as a city is that our character, integrity and the way of life in Mt. Juliet continues to be the best, and only gets better. One such success story out of all the success stories in Mt. Juliet is our very own Mt. Juliet Christian Academy. Did you know that Mt. Juliet Christian Academy just celebrated its 30th year in Mt. Juliet? That’s right, thirty years and still growing strong. We have lots of great services here in Mt. Juliet and Mt. Juliet Christian Academy is one of those services. There are many great private schools throughout Tennessee, but this one is ours. It bares our towns name and has been very instrumental in turning out some very successful and bright young men and women. I’m proud to call Mt. Juliet, Tennessee home and I’m proud to know that we offer great private educational opportunities right here in Mt. Juliet. If you are considering a private education for your son or daughter, please consider Mt. Juliet Christian first. They have been molding young minds and lives for thirty years. In closing, I would like to congratulate Mt. Juliet Christian Academy and the entire staff on thirty wonderful years of service to the citizens of Mt. Juliet and beyond. Your impact will be forever felt and your service to our community is much appreciated. Go MJCA Saints!
