Members of the Tennessee Department of Transportation joined officials in Mt. Juliet on Tuesday to break ground on a project to widen State Route 171, or Mt. Juliet Road, from Division to US 70 (Lebanon Road). The project is being funded through money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Local, State, and is already under construction. From left to right are: Mt. Juliet District 2 Commissioner Will Sellers, District 1 Commissioner Ted Floyd, TDOT chief engineer Paul Degges, Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam, Wilson County Mayor Bob Dedman, Rep. Stratton Bone, Rep. Susan Lynn, and Sen. Mae Beavers. “Nothing made me happier this year or more proud than to vote to fund this project in our State budget, because I was voting for the citizens of Mt. Juliet,” Lynn said. Beavers noted that the ground being “broken” would be the “last leg” of the project, which she said she had “dreamed of since the mid-1990s.” The nearly 2.2 mile widening of Mt. Juliet Road is one of some 200 projects statewide funded through the Recovery Act. The contract was awarded to Lojac Enterprises at a cost of $8.9 million. When complete, Mt. Juliet Road will be widened to five total lanes, ~ Photo by Tomi L. Wiley

MJ woman joining in 3-day walk for breast cancer research to get involved, honor mother By Tomi L. Wiley Managing Editor When Andrea Rial’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago Rial was living in Virginia,

her mother was in Chicago, and Rial felt as if there was nothing she could do about it. “It was agonizing, knowing she was there, and sick, and I was so far away,”

Rial said. “I felt so helpless. So, I decided to do something about it.” Rial said a couple of years ago a friend asked her for a donation for the Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk,

As of Tuesday Andrea still has $1,418.00 to raise to meet her goal. ~ Photo submitted and as the daughter of a breast cancer survivor it “played on my mind for a long time.” Rial did some research and decided to get involved and participate in the walk herself. Last year’s walk, Rial said, was on the anniversary of her mother’s first surgery. “Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among certain women demographics,” Rial said. She added that Asian women moving to America have an 80 percent higher chance than those born here, lesbians have an increased risk, and among women under age 40, African Americans have a higher incidence of breast

cancer than white women, although white women have a higher rate of developing breast cancer than any other racial or ethnic group. The 3 Day Walk will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a National Philanthropic Trust Project. Some of the benefits will go toward researching risks and reasons for breast cancer in different demographics. Rial will walk in the event in Chicago, IL, August 7, 8, and 9. She said that although there is an event in Atlanta as well, which would be closer to Mt. Juliet, her mother and family live in Chicago and they “make a whole family deal out of it.” “After the race last year we all went to a restaurant to eat,” Rial remembered. “This year I think we’re going to grill out, See 3 Day, Page 11

Cumberland Valley Quilters honor MJ men ‘Quilts of Valor’

Oakwood Commons with Publix & PetsMart 4636 Lebanon Pike Hermitage, TN 37076 871-4627 www.files2print.com

Kathleen Hardin, president of the Cumberland Valley Quilters, presents Specialist Clay Miller and Specialist Corey Seaborn, both of Mt. Juliet, each with “Quilts of Valor” as a tribute to their service in the military and the struggles they endured since being wounded. Both men are 2000 graduates of Mt. Juliet High School.

Submitted FRANKLIN -- Two Mt. Juliet men were each the recipient Sunday of a “Quilt of Valor,” presented by the Cumberland Valley Quilters Association to recognize the injured veterans’ service to our country while in Iraq. Recognized Sunday during the kickoff of the 10th season of the Carnton Summer Concert Series were Specialist Clay Miller and Specialist Cory Seaborn, who grew up together attending Mt. Juliet High School. They graduated in 2000. Miller served with the 520th Infantry, 3rd Brigade out of Fort Lewis, Wash. While serving as a medic, he was wounded while in Mosul, Iraq. He served abroad for 16 months. Seaborn was part of the 58th Combat Engineer Team from Fort Irwin, Calif., GUNS, from Page 3

posting a sign will be obeyed only by law abiding citizens,” Hagerty responded. “Criminals will still carry. In fact, criminals will have easy pickings since they will know all law abiding citizens have left their guns in their cars. If the commission chooses to opt-out, I am fearful for those who want to use the parks and the walking trails. I have been on the trail at dusk and, on one occasion, felt threatened.” Hagerty added that he has “heard from some constituents but very few. Most are expressing their views

that was attached to the 10th Mountain, 2nd Brigade from Fort Drum, N.Y. Deployed from June 2004-July 2005, Seaborn received shrapnel injuries and a concussion when an improved explosive device (IED) and other explosions occurred while he was under direct and indirect enemy fire. His injuries became chronic, requiring back surgery. The Cumberland Valley Quilters Association, a group of 140 members based in Franklin, presented the handmade “Quilts of Valor” to Seaborn and Miller. Lisa Patton, director of Special Events at Carnton, said, “Carnton is proud of our Tennessee soldiers both past and present and we are honored to join together with CVQ to extend a heartfelt thanks to the soldiers for their dedication to our country.”

that their rights should be protected.” Hagerty said that should Mt. Juliet officials vote against opting out of the new law and people with permits are allowed to carry weapons in city parks he doesn’t believe there will be much change in attendance. “I don’t forsee any change in attendance at the parks. The reality is: there are probably some at the parks who are carrying now, yet we’ve never had an incident.” Mt. Juliet city commissioners meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, at City Hall, with a public hearing set to begin at 6:15 p.m.

NASHVILLE OLD HICKORY BLVD.

Mt. Juliet’s Town Center Overlay is on the way to becoming optional as the planning commission voted Thursday to send the ordinance changing the overlay to city commissioners for approval. The new version would also add incentives for developers to use the plan, according to Mayor Linda Elam, who also serves on the committee that recommended the changes. Two Mt. Juliet churches received approval for their plans from the Planning Commission, but changes to Providence residential areas were deferred Thursday night. The commission approved site plans for Silver Springs Baptist Church, after having deferred them last month. Mt. Juliet Director of Public Works Marlin Keel recommended approval, saying the details had been worked out, but he asked the commission’s approval be pending verification of three minor items. Commission Chair Jay Cameli thanked the developers for attending a staff tech review to iron out the issues that caused last month’s deferral. A request by Jere McCullough representing The Paddocks developers also was approved. The request to allow two lots on Pleasant Grove Road to be combined and deeded to a church was accepted by the commission. The plan for annexation and services at Bel Air at Beckwith also received a thumbs-up from the commissioners after the developer worked through details at the tech review. Neither of the developers had attended staff tech reviews before last month’s meeting, but now attendance by developers’ representatives at tech reviews is mandatory prior to coming before the commission. Phil Klober, representing the developer, said the proposed design matches an existing building that is part of the development better. He added that a survey of the population the development is expected to house showed they prefer the style over one

that used more brick. “It will seem more like the homes where they used to live,” he said. Initially, the commission agreed to accept the review of the final plat for three sections of residential development at Providence. The new plan would divide duplexes into slightly smaller single-family units, on individual lots. But when Frank Horton, representing the developer, said it was possible he would be back with a request to eliminate the 55and-over age restrictions on two sections, and change unit sizes and setbacks on all three, the commission decided to “accept a request to defer action” until more information is available. Elam pointed out that the city thought there was a commitment to the age restriction, and added, “People who bought homes in that section were promised the age restriction. I think we have a trust issue here.” City Attorney Jay Holleman told commissioners he’s not sure if the city could enforce such a restriction, even though developers are allowed to place the restriction. “It’s different for private agreements than it is for government conditions,” he said. Commissioner Lori Laundry added that the city would not have approved the original plan if it had not included the restriction. “If we allow the age change, we could have 1,000 students in those units,” she said. “We don’t have space for them.” For slightly different reasons, the changes to another section of the plan also were deferred. In that case, the developer wants to build larger homes on the same lots. The result would mean 12 feet between houses instead of the originally proposed 20 feet. And parking on the street could not be added because all of the streets and other infrastructure for the development already are complete. Horton said the major reason for the changes is a change of contractor. He said the original contractor had dropped out of the project, and the new contractor has a “slightly different product.”

Choral Dynamics seeks new director Choral Dynamics is searching for a new Music Director to lead and direct the community chorus for the 2009-2010 season. Jonathan Gardner has directed the group very capably since the group started 4 years ago but due to increasing demands as music minister at First Baptist Church and the need to pursue additional personal and family goals he recently stepped down amicably. “Jonathan Gardener is the reason Choral Dynamics came into being – we owe him a lot,” Gary Rabideau past Chairman of the Arts Alliance said. Russell Stein and Lindy Rankin board members of Choral Dynamics have stated that the ideal candidate will have a degree in music/vocal music direction or course work in vocal music direction. This individual will need to have passion for leading community singers in a variety of music genre and performances. The group is an auditioned SATB group currently with 20 eager singers who perform at the minimum 2 shows per year with a few community engagements also. It is indicated that the position will carry some financial compensation in the near future. Our goal is to grow the group to 35 or more singers, to provide quality choral music in our community and one day provide either charity funding or scholarships back to worthy local community organizations and/or students. The group has been meeting at 7:00 on Monday nights about 35 weeks a year. Qualified candidates should provide a resume and letter of qualifications to Gary Rabideau at grabideau@ crye-leike.com or call him at 615-415-1740.

Math Tip of the Week

The first step to building a numbers sense is being able to count from any number, by any number, to any number. Kids often do well counting by a number starting at zero, but it is more difficult starting at random numbers. As I stated a few weeks ago, 10 is an important number. Try counting by 10 with your child, but starting at different numbers. For example ask your child to count by 10 starting at 7. You get them started and see if they can see the pattern and finish for you. 7, 17, 27, 37, 47, 57, .... Pause a bit to see if they are able to jump in. Next start at 23 and try again. Once your child feels comfortable going forwards, go backwards starting at 92. 92, 82, 72, 62, ... I was working with a 4th grader and this girl was not able to add 45 + 10 without using her fingers. We stopped and practiced counting by 10’s and after about 10 minutes she saw the pattern and was off her fingers. Once they master counting by tens, you can ask questions like “What is 23 + 10?” “What is 32 + 10?” “What is 47 - 10?” and so on. Enjoy and remember to always make it fun.

3 Day, from Page 2 relax, just enjoy each other. After 60 miles I’m going to be pretty tired.” The walk lasts for three days and includes 20 miles of walking per day. Rial said participants walk through neighborhoods and city streets and end up at a college, where “there is a sea of pink pup tents,” shower trucks and food. She said the event in Chicago last year raised some $6 million. This year, however, Rial said fundraising has been “very, very tough.” “It’s understandable in this economy, but right now I’m at the exact opposite of where I was last year in terms of fundraising,” Rial said last week. Rial had a benefit yard sale on Saturday and raised $160.00, she said Monday, as well as a benefit car wash at SteakN-Shake on Sunday that raised $250.00. Rial, her husband Wayne, and their two

children have lived in Mt. Juliet for eight years. Wayne is a former Marine and now works for the US Government. He is the executive officer of the MidCumberland Young Marines in Mt. Juliet, which Rial is also involved in, helping female cadets. Rial said the best way to donate is to visit the 3 Day website, www.The3Day. org and click on “donate” for an instant donation. Anyone who wants to donate is able to search for a walker by name, location of the walk (for Rial that would be Chicago), and donate. Rial said if someone doesn’t feel comfortable with that she is available at 615-238-4316 or donations may be dropped off at The Chronicle office and left at the front desk. Checks should be made out to Breast Cancer 3 Day, and Rial’s participant number is 1376681. Donations are

tax-deductible. In the meantime, Rial has been training strenuously using weekly plans provided by the organization as a guide, and preparing for her trip and the long walk for a cure. “It’s been tough, and time-consuming, and hard to deal with at times, fitting it all in with family obligations and, well, just life,” Rial said, thoughtfully thumbing a well-worn baseball cap that reads “Think Happy Stuff.” She smiled. “But then I think about my mother, an 11-year cancer survivor and what she went thorough and how blessed I am that she made it. Many didn’t, and still more don’t. That’s why I’m doing this, that’s why I’m walking: to help those who can’t, and to help stop any more women from not making it. Then they can walk on their own anniversaries.”

Reflections from an Old Friend Things I Don’t Understand The older I get the more things I find that I don’t understand or find to be odd or funny. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. For example, why is it that we park in driveways and drive on parkways? Why do we sit in a drive thru longer than it would take to enter the restaurant and actually eat before you could even get your food by using the drive thru at times? Why do we tailgate other drivers when we don’t like being tailgated ourselves? Think about it, the people we tailgate have never tailgated us. If apartments are apartments shouldn’t they be further apart. They should be called closements. It’s like rush hour. Why do they call it rush hour? Does it always take an hour? What if it only takes you thirty minutes to travel during rush hour? Does that mean you should call your travel time rush half hour? And what’s the rush? You’re only going to be sitting in traffic anyway. Why do we say night falls and day breaks? This sounds like an accident with stuff falling and breaking all the time. Why do we say have your cake and eat it too? Why would we have cake and not eat it? Cake is good, we should eat it, not waste it. If you don’t want your cake I’ll take it. I like cake. What about this one? Go the whole nine yards. Why would anyone just go nine yards? If we always did that in football we would always be one yard short of a first down. Why wouldn’t we just say he went all the way? Nobody ever says he went 8 feet two inches. It’s raining cats and dogs. When have you ever seen it raining cats and dogs? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Could someone please explain? The proof’s in the pudding. Yeah I heard them talking about this the other night on CSI. They were investigating a crime and the detective said the proof was in the pudding. I was wondering were the proof was located. Glad I now know where the proof is. I slept like a baby. Babies wake up like every two hours. Who wants to sleep like a baby? Don’t cry over spilled milk. You would if you didn’t have enough for your cereal. Have you ever tried to eat Captain Crunch without milk? I have and it’s not a pretty sight. In closing, I thought a few of these funny sayings might make your day a little brighter and possibly make you smile. I know they are silly. That was exactly what I was shooting for. I hope it worked. Have a great day friends.
