The ICE officials took Chris into custody, where he remains awaiting deportation to his native Jamaica. Jean said Tuesday that her husband was scheduled to be moved to a Federal detention center in Oakdale, Louisiana, that day. It’s his last stop, Jean said, before he leaves the country. According to Jean, Chris Holness was born in Jamaica in October 1965. He moved with his mother to Miami, Florida, in 1978 at age 12. From 1987 to 1991, Chris struggled with an addiction to crack-cocaine. He was arrested several times for drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana, and armed robbery of convenient stores between 1987 and 1991. Chris was sentenced two years in prison for a felony due to drugs. He was released eight months into his sentence due to good behavior. Chris met Jean in 1991, and the couple married in 1992. Photo submitted citizen. Immigration services ordered deportation for Chris on July 22, 1992 in Broward or Dade County, Florida. The deportation was appealed and dismissed, Jean said, on March 24, 1997. The original attorney that represented Chris was Jeffery N. Brauwerman in Florida. Unfortunately, when the appeal was made, Jean and Chris were never notified that it was dismissed. They were notified on May 17, the same day I.C.E. took Chris away. Jean said there was absolutely no notification on the appeal since it was made in July 1992. The couple moved to Mt. Juliet in October 1998, and they have two children, Paige, 14, and Merrick, 12, who attend Mt. Juliet schools. Chris, who works for Marchon Optical, and his family is active at Grace United Methodist. “Chris has worked very hard as a father, supporter, worker, mentor and coach,” Jean said. “Chris has been a soccer coach to many kids in Nashville through the DonelsonHermitage Y.M.C.A. He has coached some of the same
kids for 10 years. He also coaches and supports his children. Chris has played soccer on various adult leagues through out the city. Chris is a tax paying citizen who has worked very hard to support his family and be the man he is today.” Jean said Chris is recognized in the community as a man of honesty, integrity and compassion. The family’s neighbor, Jeff Knop, confirmed Tuesday that Chris Holness is “an absolute pillar of our community, a super neighbor and wonderful friend.” “We are desperately hoping to get enough attention to keep Chris in the country and get him back to Mt. Juliet,” Knop said. “This is not the purpose of immigration laws.” Knop said that friends, family and neighbors of the Holness family should contact their local state and Federal representatives. He said politicians “respond to numbers, and numbers are what we hope to give them.” He said the South Florida judge in charge of See HOLNESS, Page 8

MJ manager: recession has officially hit City, budget suffers By Tomi L. Wiley Managing Editor Mt. Juliet city commissioners battled against an economic recession that “has finally hit” the city in order to approve its fiscal year
District 3 Commissioner Ed Hagerty took issue with the proposed hikes early in the meeting during the commissioner comments portion, stating that people is his district “are suffering” due to the economic downturn. He said

-- MJ City Manager Randy Robertson 2009/2010 budget on first reading Monday night. “The funds in Mt. Juliet have dried up, guys,” remarked City Manager Randy Robertson at the table Monday. “We’re not building. I don’t want to do a budget based on hope.” Those “hopes” refer to the eventual sales tax income from big box retailers such as Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, and Publix opening in the next year in Mt. Juliet. The City imposes a zero property tax on its citizens, relying heavily on sales tax income and new construction fees for municipal income. The projected “flat” general fund balance for June 30, 2010, is $507,000.51. The budget includes a onehalf percent pay raise for City employees, which Robertson referred to as “fat” that could be trimmed but which he considered “incentive” for employees within City Hall. The only additional City personnel affecting the proposed budget are three additional Mt. Juliet Police Department officers, which could be covered by Federal Homeland Security stimulus package funds. Robertson noted that some $600 billion was requested nationwide and only $1 billion budgeted – so, best case scenario, the City could hope to get onehalf of additional officers needed, which is estimated to be eight. Two issues surfaced as sticky points to the proposed budget, including fee hikes for park rentals and an increase in sewer charges.
the rise in park fees, which he and District 4 Commissioner Jim Bradshaw voted against on both first and second readings, was “indicative of people suffering but government growing.” As far as the budget goes, Mayor Linda Elam commented that the General Fund is some $793,000 less than what was proposed for this year, and that a loss of some $11 million “needs some explanation.” “That’s a disturbing picture,” she remarked. “We’re taking in less money than last year but spending more than last year,” Hagerty added. “If we did that with our own (personal) budgets we’d get into trouble pretty quick.” Robertson said that there are two “primary concerns” with the proposed budget: City staffers “did not build a Wal-Mart – based budget,” and that private home building permit numbers are drastically down from previous years. As for the “Wal-Mart – based budget,” Robertson said that there is “added prosperity around the corner, but we can’t base a budget on that.” And it’s common knowledge that new home construction has stalled, and that Mt. Juliet is, according to Robertson, no longer immune. “The recession has caught up with Mt. Juliet,” he told commissioners. Robertson added that “there’s nothing going on of substance,” as far as potential, substantive
and Pops, but nothing major that we know of,” Robertson said. The hike in sewer fees stems from the fact that, officials said, there has been no increase in sewer See BUDGET, Page 5

“We’re talking Michael Lewis’ red-hot, super-souped up flaming red spotlessly-clean restored Camaro, for example,” Litchford answered. “Michael, a long-time supporter of Friends, can regularly be seen driving his treasure on wheels during sunny days at the park and his hometown of Smyrna. “It’s an excellent opportunity for parents and grandparents to show their children some of America’s unique history of automotive manufacturing. Kids can view the cars and trucks grandma and grandpa grew up driving and doing their ‘courting’ in.” Bentley has car number 36 of 41 ever made of the vintage and rare Plymouth Road Runner convertible. “This Road Runner one of only 41 ever made that had air conditioning,” noted Bentley, who added that he expects prized vehicles from throughout Tennessee to be on hand for viewing at this car show in the park. This is an annual fund-raiser for Friends of Long Hunter, a non-profit organization of naturalists who encourage folks to utilize the free services of the massive park that sprawls over three counties, Davidson, Wilson and Rutherford. “We’re very active in
Lake that features a paved two-mile walking trail,” Litchford noted. Persons wanting to show their vehicles can preregister for $8, or pay $10 the day of the show, noted Litchford. “We’ll award first, second and third place plaques for the most outstanding Chevrolets, Fords, Mopars, and trucks,” Litchford added. “Plus, we’ll have awards for ‘best in show,’ the public’s ‘best in show’ and the car owner who came the greatest distance to participate.” Make checks payable to Friends of Long Hunter, at the park office located at 2910 Hobson Pike 37076. All profits go to operational funds for use by Friends of Long Hunter, that sponsors events throughout the year such as Fishing for Kids in September, the massive Native American Indian Association’s Pow Pow in October, scout troop encampments, photography contests and expeditions, and a popular children’s nature show each Monday, 10 a.m., at the park office on Hobson Pike.” Any donation to Friends of Long Hunter is tax deductible. Persons needing more information can call Litchford at 400-5492 or the park staff at 885-2422.

Juliet since 1997, and a sewer fee reduction took place in 2002, due to increased commercial development and a boom in new sewer hook ups. Mt. Juliet Public Works Assistant Director Cajun Joyner noted that sewer was “taking in more money than it was spending” during booming economic development. “We were riding that bubble, taking in the money, but its just died,” he remarked. Robertson added that Mt. Juliet has grown “two to three times larger” than the last time there was a sewer increase. Mt. Juliet Public Works Director Marlin Keel added that there has been a $2.2 million drop in development sewer fees in the past two years. Commissioners approved the FY 2009/2010 budget on first reading by a 4 – 1 vote, with Hagerty voting against. In other budget news, commissioners voted 4 – 1 to approve on first reading an amendment to the 2008/2009 budget for $100,000 for crossing equipment maintenance and to authorize the mayor to sign an agreement with Nashville & Eastern Railroad, with Bradshaw voting against. Commissioners
approved another amendment to the FY 2008/2009 budget on first reading for equipment to schedule Channel 3, with funding transfers to come from Stormwater, Police and Economic Development budgets. The ordinance was approved by a 4 – 1 vote, with Elam voting against. Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to approve a contract with Gresham, Smith and Partners as amended and subject to review of the actual contract, as well as a resolution to approve the Cleary Construction contract in the amount of $1.2 million for sanitary sewer relocations for the N. Mt. Juliet Road construction and to authorize the mayor to sign the contract. Commissioners deferred one meeting an ordinance on first reading to adopt a new title to the Animal Control ordinance, which was called “too restrictive” by Elam. Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to authorize Robertson and City Finance Director John Rossmayer to sell the house (to be removed from the property) located on the corner of Sunset Circle and N. Mt. Juliet Road and authorize the mayor to sign the necessary documents to sell the house. The move is to

An ordinance was unanimously approved on second reading to approve the official Zoning Map for the City of Mt. Juliet. An ordinance to amend the Zoning Ordinance to allow the construction of cedar fences in lieu of masonry walls at Clearview Estates along N. Mt. dismissing Chris Holness’s case and possibly reversing the deportation will respond to letters and testimonials from people who know Chris and will attest “to the way he has rehabilitated and changed the course of his life.” Knop said he is coordinating emails, anyone who wants to help by sending a letter to the judge can email him at JeffAV8R@ comcast.net. “We need enough personal letters to testify that Chris Holness is a great volunteer, a great church man, and friends to testify to forward to the judge,” Knop said. “The judge needs to know that there are people like Chris out there who, yes, did some things that were wrong years and years ago but paid for them and have built families and lives since. These immigration laws need reform.” Knop added that even Chris Holness’s original criminal attorney who represented Chris so many years ago in Florida “said he remembers and will help Chris.” Officials with I.C.E. did not return request for comment by press time Tuesday. Jean said that her family had discussed sharing Chris’s story as a precautionary tale of drug addiction and redemption to children, but she “never knew this would be the path.” “We had prayed for a way to tell his story to touch the hearts of kids and teach them by his examples, as he learned from his mistakes and built a new, whole life for himself and us,” Jean said tearfully on Tuesday. She added that she will use this experience as a way to learn more about immigration laws, reach out to others and work on immigration reform. Until then, Jean, her family, friends and church family are working desperately to “slow down” Chris’s deportation. Jean said she is “personally grateful for everyone reaching out” to her and her family. “My goal is to get my husband returned to live in Mt. Juliet, raise our family, grow and prosper, just like everybody else. But there are many, many other families this is affecting. I hope, when this is over and my husband is returned to our family, to work on getting immigration reform, but right now I can only work on making my own family whole again.”

Reflections from an Old Friend Being a Father is a Gift A father is someone who will be there for his child, a man who will teach his child right from wrong, love from hate and responsibility. A father will also teach leadership, sportsmanship, compassion and teamwork. A father can’t claim the title of a father unless he is truly involved in his child’s life. Any male can participate in the making of a child, however, only a real father can claim the status and title of a father. To those that are somewhat lacking in the father department, there is no time like the present to start being a true father to your child. To those that are lacking, you really don’t know what you are missing. You’re missing being called daddy, pops, dad and father. You’re missing out on first words, first steps and first discoveries. If for some reason you chose because of personal reasons not to be involved in your child’s life for the best interests of the child, then I applaud you for making the right and best choice for your child. If you chose not to get involved in your child’s life because you didn’t want to burden or trouble yourself with taking responsibility for your actions, then shame on you. Please take these statements to heart and get involved in your child’s life. Be a father, be a positive role model in your child’s life. Imagine the pride, joy, and excitement of watching your child grow, flourish and blossom. Being a father isn’t something you just throw away. Being a father is an honor given by God. Don’t waste the ultimate gift. Don’t wait another day at being the father you know you should be. Children don’t ask to be born. That is why they deserve your love and support. Be there to wipe the tears from their eyes when they scrape their knees or hurt. Be there to share in happy times, as well as sad times. Your child needs you! To all good dads, pops, daddy’s and fathers Happy Father’s Day. You guys are great and should be very proud, and should never forget the awesome gift being a father is. Please never ever forget how important being a father is in your child’s life. They need and depend on you. I would like to thank my dad and father-n-law for being such great dads to me. I Love You both so much.
