The pre-school classes at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy held a baby item donation drive to benefit the Mt. Juliet Help Center recently and gathered over 120 items for children in less fortunate families in the area. Pictured seated with the donations is Carolyn Duggan, Help Center director. Mrs. Jenny Bess Hibbett, pre-school director, said the seven classes also garnered a large amount of monetary donations. “The children were so happy to bring baby things,” Mrs. Hibbett said, “and we are all happy to help.” ~ Photo by Tomi L. New outbreak of thefts hits Lebanon Road area By Tomi L. Wiley Managing Editor A new rash of robberies has hit Mt. Juliet car lots recently, authorities said Monday, with thieves snatching an important piece from vehicles: the catalytic converter. Mt. Juliet Police
Chief Andy Garrett said Monday that several catalytic converters, which is a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine, have been reported stolen from used car lots along Lebanon Road in recent weeks. Garrett said that the converters contain
platinum and titanium, both expensive and salable items. “It’s an issue right now, but we’re on it,” Garrett said. “People will do just about anything these days for money, this just proves that. Car owners and dealers just need to know about it, and be on the lookout.”

On Sunday, November 29, at 11 a.m. Bro. W.L. Baker will once again preach for the Silver Springs Baptist Church, which meets on Lebanon Road at Benders Ferry, Mt. Juliet. Bro. Baker will turn 102 years old on August 3, 2010. Worshipers will note that Bro. Baker has tremendous communication skills to this day and wisdom and insight that flows from his many years, observations, and experiences in life. Russ Stephens, pastor of the Silver Springs Church invites the general public to come and hear from one who has not only lived a long time, but who gives the Lord all the credit for his life and abilities. The church building is handicap accessible and a nursery is available for children under three. For more information, call the church office, 758-7853 or visit www. silverspringsbaptist. com. The church will also have its normal 8:30 a.m. worship service also. Pastor Stephens will preach in that service a message entitled, “Forgiving Those Who Have Hurt Us.” Bro. Baker was born August 3, 1908, in New Middleton, TN. His father decided to move his wife and three sons to a farm on
North Cumberland Street so the boys could attend Lebanon High School and Cumberland University. After retirement, Bro. Baker continues to be busy in ministry. He has served twenty-eight mid-state churches as interim pastor, as well as the Wilson County Baptist Association as interim director. He preaches every first Sunday night of the month at Dry Creek Baptist Church, in DeKalb County and local churches continue to call on him to be their pulpit guest. Bro. Baker continues to drive, tend his yard, and garden. He is involved in the Lebanon area and has been honored by the Wilson County Fair and this past spring was the macebearer for the 166th Commencement ceremony at Cumberland. Bro. Baker is known for deep wisdom and insight into Scripture. Many people also have heard him recite from memory, Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount.” Bro. Baker has had two “companions,” as he refers to his wives, in life and ministry. Bonnie Anderson Baker died of cancer in 1952. From their union came Bro. Baker’s only child, his devoted daughter, Ann Sloan. His second wife, Olive also succumbed to cancer in 1982.

Planning commission takes a ‘stand’ on variance issues
needed in order to better coordinate the guidelines with other more specific references, such as the TN Department of Reservation, which is utilized regularly. Planning Commission Chair Jay Cameli motioned for approval of the newly updated guidelines, Lori Landry seconded, and the amendment was unanimously approved. The staff recommended that the Development Letter of Credit for the Hickory Hills Phase 3 Section 3 be released. Commission Vice Chair Luke Winchester made a motion to approve, Art Giles seconded, and it was unanimously approved. Jeff Anderson, a representative from the Environmental Science Corporation, went before the Commission to request a waiver of the Commercial Design Standards for the type of material used on the rear façade of one of the buildings located on their campus. In August of 2008, Environmental Science submitted a Campus Expansion Site Plan for the addition of this building and during the submittal process the owners were made aware of Design Standards for Commercial Structures. The Design Standards state that commercial buildings which are visible from a public street are required to have
Steve Abbott of Abbott and Sons (Clairrene’s Treasures) located at 11907 Lebanon Road, went before the commission to also request a waiver of the Commercial Design Standards, for the type of material used to enclose a roof covered area. The building predates the current Zoning Ordinance, which is zoned under (CG) Commercial Zoning. The entire façade of the building is metal and Abbott would like to enclose the attached covered area to make the building more aesthetically pleasing. The new design would consist of metal siding to match the existing building front, metal French doors on the front, three metal garage doors on the east side to match the garage door on the main building, and new landscaping lining the store frontage on Lebanon Road. The staff recommended approval of the request as long as the following conditions were met; landscaping installed as proposed during the meeting, in a L-shaped fashion along the store frontage and back along the west side of the outdoor display area, strip and configure parking spaces to comply with the zoning ordinances. Winchester noted that Clairrene’s Treasures “compliments our city,” and motioned for

REWARD:
OLD HICKORY BLVD.
The November 19 Planning Commission meeting was called to order almost thirty minutes late Thursday night, because of an emergency at the Wilson Bank and Trust. Though the meeting got started late, the agenda that was set to go before the commission short and sweet. Mt. Juliet City Engineer Marlin Keel offered the revised Stormwater Design Guidelines before the Commission for approval. The Guidelines, under Appendix C in Subdivision Regulations, were first reviewed by the Commission in 2002 and again in 2004 and have not been updated since. Keel noted that it was not a complete rewrite, but rather an update that was
a minimum of 70% brick and stone on the façade facing the public street and 50% on all other facades. Facades not visible from the public street are required to be comprised of a minimum of 50% brick/stone. During a follow up inspection of the new building, the staff found that the three sides of the structure were up to standards, while the rear of the building consisted of the original siding only. Landry stated that she “has a problem with begging for forgiveness, rather than asking for permission beforehand.” Cameli said the commission should “take a stand” and motioned for disapproval of the waiver, Landry seconded, all else disapproved except Luke Winchester, who abstained on the item.

Tallent’s request for new trial pushed to early February By Tomi L. Wiley Managing Editor A court hearing date for the woman convicted for killing a Mt. Juliet police officer and a Wilson County Sheriff’s Department officer was postponed last week, with officials saying Tuesday that another “tentative” date has been set for early February, 2010. Fallon Tallent was convicted in July 2004 for the deaths of Mt. Juliet Police Sgt. Jerry Mundy and Wilson County Sheriff’s Deputy John Musice on July 9, 2003. Tallent, driving a stolen Mercedes from Knoxville to Nashville to visit her parole officer, led police on a high speed chase from Knoxville on I-40, which ended near the Mt. Juliet exit where
Mundy and Musice were laying spike strips to stop her. Tallent was found
guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. The Maryville woman, who was 21 when she struck and killed the

two officers, was in Lebanon last week for a hearing to request a new trial, claiming she had in effective counsel. The post conviction relief petition was postponed on Thursday, however, and rescheduled, tentatively, for February 5, according to Wilson County Court Clerk Linda Neal. “That date is not set in stone,” Neal added. Tallent’s right to petition for a new trial is protected under her Sixth Amendment rights. Legal officials stated that she will probably try to prove that some part of the original trial violated her civil rights. Tallent is set to appear in court in Lebanon, in the Wilson County Judicial Center or in the Musice facility on High Street, named after the slain officer.
