Kick off your holiday shopping at Holiday Expo presented by local lifestyle magazine From staff reports Local magazine Wilson Living will host the First Annual Wilson Living Holiday Expo on November 6 and 7 at The Mill in Lebanon. Held in both the Edgerton Room and the Atrium, the Expo will be the perfect place for Wilson County residents to kick off their holiday shopping. The event is expected to draw over 100 vendors who will be on hand selling unique items sure to please everyone on Christmas morning. Santa will be on hand to visit and to take photographs with the children. Various food vendors will also be on site so be sure to come hungry. Entertainment will be provided by the actors and musicians of Millworks Theatre who will be performing holiday entertainment free to all those who attend on both days. Becky Andrews, Editor of Wilson Living, notes that “we came up with this idea as a way of giving back to both our readers and our advertisers. Wilson County has been hit by the recession just like every other county in the state but our residents have a way of persevering. We thought it would be a fun event where local residents could come out, shop and have some fun and fellowship while also supporting their local

vendors. Summit Hospital, Wilson Bank & Trust and The Wilson Post are cosponsors of the event and we are all so excited about starting a Holiday Shopping Event right here in Wilson County.” The event is free to the public and part of the proceeds of the event will be used to fund a Wilson Living Magazine scholarship in honor of “Horan,” B e c k y ’ s mother, who was a much beloved teacher in the Wilson County School System. “We encourage local vendors to call us to be part of this event. We know there are lots of mom and pop companies run out of people’s homes in the area who don’t have storefronts but still produce wonderful products. This is an opportunity for them to share their products for the holidays. We are also excited that many many of our local stores in Lebanon, Mt. Juliet and Watertown are going to be on hand showcasing and selling their products. And for those who need to relax after a day of shopping, eating and being entertained, local physicians and aestheticians will be on hand providing some of the latest beauty products and treatments.” So make sure to come out and enjoy both Friday and Saturday with Wilson Living Magazine and kick off the holiday season!

Wilson Living Holiday Expo will be held at The Mill of Lebanon t 300 N. Maple Street, Lebanon, The event will be held Friday, November 6th from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday November 7th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information visit www.wilsonlivingexpo.com or call Becky at 969-6751.

Mt. Juliet High School Golden Bears Players of the Week

Sports Will MJHS make it a first ever 10 - 0 season? From staff reports Nine weeks of football has yet to decide the championship of District 9AAA. Look for that matter to be settled Friday, Oct. 30 when 9-0 Mt. Juliet entertains 7-2 Beech with the winner claiming the league title. Coach Roger Perry’s Golden Bears are a perfect 6-0 in 9AAA after trampling Portland 38-13 Friday, Oct. 23 in Sumner County. Beech enters Friday’s contest 5-1 in league play after whipping Hendersonville High 21-9 last week as Jonathan Sites scored all three touchdowns for the Buccaneers. At 9-0, Mt. Juliet has equaled the best start in the history of the school’s football program -- an identical 9-0 run in the 1965 season. No Mt. Juliet High team has ever gone 10-0. The Golden Bears held a commanding 246 halftime advantage at Portland last Friday as senior fullback Brady Earnhardt scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of three and 18 yards. Portland scored with 8:32 left in the second period as Trey Link hauled in a 10yard scoring pass from Joe Arendoll. Mt. Juliet answered with 10 points shortly before intermission as quarterback Reed Gurchiek scored from two yards out and reliable kicker Tyler Emmetts blasted a 38-yard field goal BENEFIT, from Page 4 When a child has been diagnosed with cancer, everyone in the family and network of friends is affected. Juliet padded its lead with rushing TD’s from Brannon Garza (8 yards) and T.J. Alejo (5 yards) in the second half. Earnhard ran 17 times for 105 yards to lead all rushers in the game. Gurchiek added nine carries for 45 yards while Chris Brazile had seven

Officals announce $113M in funds for Wilson County By Jennifer Horton Special to The Chronicle State Rep. Stratton Bone, D-Lebanon, State Rep. Susan Lynn, R-Lebanon, and Sen. Mae Beavers have announced that during the current 2009-2010 fiscal year, approximately $113 million in state appropriated expenditures will find its way into Wilson County through various state agencies and programs. Wilson County will also receive a portion of the $12.1 billion in federal funds that are included in Tennessee’s $29.4 billion budget as adopted by the 106th General Assembly. “This budget was developed under the shadow of an unprecedented downturn in the economy. As a result, this budget, as well as the upcoming budget will be reflective of a shrinking government as we work to balance a budget that has lost over $1.2 billion in state tax revenue,” Bone and Lynn said. “Difficult decisions had to be made to ensure this budget would be balanced within expected revenues.” The two legislators listed budgeted state appropriations benefiting Wilson County in the

following general categories: $62.4 million for K-12 school funding; $10.8 million in state shared tax collections; $24.75 million for health and social services; $6.28 million for justice and public safety; $3.34 million for recreation and resources development; $3.09 million for economic development and higher education; and $2.37 million for state highway projects. “Even though state revenue has decreased, many of my colleagues and I in the Legislature are committed to maintaining funding support for the K-12 funding formula,” Bone and Lynn said. “We will continue to protect the BEP from any of the reductions that are occurring throughout state government right now. Wilson County maintained a combined BEP funding, for both the city and county schools, of approximately $59.68 million.” Lynn and Bone further elaborated on the Health and Social Services’ appropriations benefiting Wilson County residents: $1.61 million for Children’s Services; $263,000 for Community Mental Retardation Programs; and $2.16 million for Health services, with nearly $19

million of the Health funds for TennCare. “Because of the revenue decline, this budget reflects some very painful decisions that impact many statewide programs. Without significant growth in revenues, additional reductions will have to occur next year as well,” they said. “As we struggle to maintain a balanced budget, I intend to continue to minimize this impact on the many vital state-funded programs and services now present in Wilson County.” This year’s balanced budget was achieved through a number of important decisions, Lynn and Bone said, including: · Making more than $750 million in reductions · Using a significant amount of one-time funding · Not raising taxes · Not taking money away from the Highway Fund · Not taking Stateshared taxes away from local governments “We continue to work hard to make sure Wilson County gets its share of Federal funds,” Beavers said.

MJPD announces Halloween night city patrols, sobriety checkpoints From staff reports The Mt. Juliet Police Department is encouraging parents, homeowners, children and motorists to take special safety precautions this Halloween. Many goblins, witches, super heroes, and princesses will come out in numbers when children begin to trick-or-treat. Additional police officers have been scheduled to patrol during the evening to ensure that Mt. Juliet’s children are safe and vandalism is kept to a minimum. Officers will be patrolling in marked and unmarked cars. Mischief will not be tolerated. During their patrols, many of the officers will be promoting safety and passing out candy to the children. The department is encouraging residents and children to meet their local police officers while they are out looking for treats. “Our officers promote safety at all times, but this night is especially important. Drivers must remain aware and drive with care since children will be out on local streets,” commented Chief Andy Garrett.

With safety a number one priority, the following tips should be considered: Tips for Parents Costumes should be flame retardant. Make sure costumes allow freedom of movement to prevent tripping. Costumes should be light in color, have children wear reflective tape on their clothing, or have a light stick/flashlight. Use make-up instead of masks. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision. A parent or responsible adult should accompany all children. Check all candy before your children eat anything. Be sure to blow out candles when leaving them unattended. Take advantage of Halloween activities sponsored by your neighborhood, church or social organization. If you notice suspicious activity, call 911. Tips for Children Take a flashlight with you. Stay with your group while trick-or treating. Go only to familiar houses

Weddings

that have their porch light on. Look both ways when crossing the street. “One of the biggest dangers presented on Halloween are injuries from tripping/ falling and pedestrian involved car accidents. The shear excitement of trick-ortreating allows children to forget practiced safety tips,” Cpl. Tyler Chandler said. In addition, the Mt. Juliet Police Department will be conducting sobriety checkpoints in the Lebanon Rd, Mt. Juliet Road, West Division Street, and Belinda Parkway areas on Saturday, October 31. The hope is to deter people from driving drunk. Please, if you are going to drink, have a designated driver, call a friend, or have someone get you a cab. The life you save may be your own. Let’s make this Halloween night another safe and festive event for everyone. For more information contact: Cpl. Tyler Chandler, at (615) 754-2550 ext. 260 or e-mail: tchandler@ cityofmtjuliet.org

Reflections from an Old Friend The Dangers of Bullying After seeing on the news recently that a teenage boy had been horrifically burned over 75% of his body after being doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire by bullies, I felt compelled to remind everyone on the dangers and destruction of lives caused by bullying. This is a perfect example of how bullying is much more than just hurtful words and teasing. For example, did you know that bullying is one of the biggest concerns of young people today? Bullying is a serious problem with 8 out of 10 children bullied at some point in their childhood. Bullying happens at school, at home and on the streets. A lot of young people don’t even realize they are making other peoples lives miserable. They think they are just joking in making fun of or bullying someone. The truth is it hurts to be bullied and can change someone’s life for ever. Bullying happens when someone picks on someone and makes their life miserable. Bullying can come in many forms from kicking, smacking, tripping, making fun of, threatening or sending out false messages and rumors about the person over the computer. People have been bullied because of their size, accent, weight, color of their skin, stance on certain issues, interests, or just because they are the new kid on the block or at school. Bullies are often insecure and pick on others to make themselves feel more important and powerful. The sad thing is what a bully doesn’t see. Their bullying can lead to low self-esteem, suicide, revenge and even assault or murder. These are all things that can be avoided. If you are someone you know is being bullied, there is help. If you’re bullied, you should tell someone. It’s very important to get other people involved. If you are being bullied it can feel like the whole world is against you and that you are own your own. Not true! The worst thing to do is to sit back and accept it. It won’t get any better unless you do something about it. If you are the victim of bullying at school you should contact your teacher, the principal or the guidance counselor for help. If the bullying occurs on the streets or away from home you can contact your parents or the police. And if the bullying takes place at home, you need to advise your parents. Bullying is also a problem with adults. Most child bullies grow up to be adult bullies. The only thing that changes is the age of the people they bully or intimidate. Bullying is not just a kid’s game. It is a practice that ruins lives and causes scars that can last a lifetime. In closing, help and advice is out there. Don’t accept bullying.
