louis sullivan: AN AMERICAN MODERNIST a powerful force in the development of early modernist american architecture, louis H. Sullivan (American, 1856–1924) worked in boomtown Chicago in the wake of the Great Fire of 1871. Steel was coming of age, and Sullivan embraced the new freedom structural steel offered, liberating a building’s shell from its support function and allowing for rich exterior detail. The Chicago Stock Exchange and its exquisite staircase was Sullivan’s most important commission, a glorious example of his gift for marrying this new construction technique with elegant ornamentation.

Created by modernist Massimo Vignelli (Italian, b. 1931), this ribbed design is masterful in its sleek simplicity and light-catching radiance. Jean Dunand Vase (ca. 1925)

a catch-all label for decorative arts and architecture between the world wars, true Art Deco was born in Paris at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925. A legend of French Art Deco was Jean Dunand (Swiss, 1877–1942), a master of lacquer and dinanderie (hand-raised metal work), as illustrated in his striking lacquered metal vase. While Art Deco designs in France were often oneof-a-kind decorative pieces for the wealthy, the aesthetic in America evolved along more practical lines, as this new style was applied to mass-produced items for the middle class, such as Donald Deskey’s sleek cigarette box. We are delighted to showcase the Museum’s collection of French Art Deco, one of the most important in the world.

the museum’s collection of art from ancient egypt is one of the finest outside cairo. From the Temple of Dendur, built by the Roman emperor Augustus about 15 b.c., to the painstakingly reassembled statues from the rule of Hatshepsut, the great female pharaoh (ca. 1473–1458 b.c.), the collection offers some 36,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural significance. AUSTRIAN ARTIST GUSTAV KLIMT (1862–1918) WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE wiener sezession (Vienna Secession) in 1897, a group whose mission was to challenge the prevailing conservatism of the day through exhibitions and publications. Given his unique vision—characterized by mosaic-like patterns, Byzantine imagery, and the lavish use of gold, as well as epic themes and overt sexuality—it is not surprising that he championed the work of other unconventional artists. Throughout his life, Klimt designed in many media, including textiles, ornamental murals, and decoration, true to the Secessionists’ credo of blurring the distinction between fine and applied arts.
