Chapter 23c
GEORGE SANDERS WHITNEY & MARY EVELINE BARNARD
R
ecords show that George Sanders Whitney was born in New Hampshire. Shortly after his marriage, he and Mary Eveline Barnard moved to New York state and settled in Troy. They were burned out in the big fire of 1856 and moved to Queensbury, Warren County, New York. After a short residence there, they moved to Glens Fall, Warren County, New York in 1857.
This must have been very difficult for George Burton Whitney’s parents. Communication and transportation were difficult. However, this very difficult decision allowed him to grow to adulthood.
From, their family group sheet, we learn that they had seven children. Four of their children died as babies. George Burton was the oldest child, but he was so sickly that the doctor told them that he would need to live in the country. He went to live with his grandparents, Stowell Barnard and Mary (Polly) Burton. He stayed there until he was well. Then he returned to his parents. He again became very sickly and returned again to his grandparents. After he was doing better, he returned home only to get worse again. His grandparents agreed to take him again on the condition that his parents would leave him with them permanently.
