Camp Healing Powers

®

Grieving the loss of a loved one is difficult, especially for a child. Grieving children are likely to feel different and alone. Recognizing the need to help children through the grieving process, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida started Camp Healing Powers, a therapeutic camp open to any child ages 7 to 17 who is grieving the death of a loved one. Mental health professionals who specialize in grief and bereavement collaborate in the design of camp and lead camp activities that help children identify and express their feelings and learn skills to help them navigate through the grief journey in a safe, supportive and fun environment.

Camp eligibility:

Share information about this therapeutic camp with parents, guardians, teachers and counselors who may know of a child who needs grief support.

Children between the ages of 7 and 17 can attend camp. The death has occurred at least three months prior to the camp date but no longer than two years. A $35 deposit reserves a camper’s space and is returned upon completion of camp. Pre-camp assessments are necessary for all camp attendees.

Pre-camp assessments are conducted by Community Hospice’s mental health professionals who meet with the parents/guardian to learn about the child’s reaction to their loss, understanding of death and mental/medical history. Our mental health professionals also meet with the child to gain an understanding of their preception of the loss and its affect on their academic performance, home environment, peer relationships, grief reation, support system and coping strategies.

All camps are held at the Camp Marywood Retreat and Conference Center in northern St. Johns County, approximately four miles south of I-295 on State Road 13.
