To live a long, healthy and serene life we need the crucial help of a network of caring people – we need social support. In order to gain and keep social support we need social skills. Choosing Civility rediscovers and expounds the essential skills that allow us to live well among others.

Social intelligence is a better predictor of success than academic intelligence. 4 Cornerstones 1. Life is a relational experience; civility is handling with care; being aware of others —“flicking of the wrist” 2. There is a connection between incivility and violence; elevate the number of civility; lowers violence 3. There is a connection between civility and our overall health and well being. There is a need for social support. Why do we have incivility? 1. Lack of restraint—our actions have consequences for others 2. Stress 3. Anonymous environment 4. Rudeness (adds to stress)
