Procedure

:

Set Induction i. Students are required to observe the picture (Refer to page151 of the textbook) and list as many manufactured substances as possible. ii. Teacher helps to highlight the importance of these substances in our daily life. iii. Relate the substances to sulphuric acid, ammonia, alloys, glass and ceramic, polymers and composite materials.

Eliciting of Ideas i. Students are divided into groups of four. ii. Students are asked to list the uses of sulphuric acid (Refer to page 152 of the text book) iii. Students listen to teacher’s explanation on the stages involved in the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

Restructuring of Ideas In groups of four, i. Students are required to carry out activity on Work This Out 9.2 (Refer to page 154 of the text book) to build a flow chart to show the manufacture of sulphuric acid. ii Students discuss the flowchart drawn with teacher. iii. Students then carry out activity on Work This Out 9.3 (Refer to page 154 of the text book) to write an essay on how sulphur dioxide causes environmental pollution. iv. Two students are chosen to read out their essays to the class.

Application of Ideas Students complete exercise on Quick Review A on page 156 of the textbook.
